Watched this film knowing that Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata were very inspired by it when they created some of their earlier work. And it shows.
This was very pleasant to watch, with a surreal feeling to it all in a nice way. It did remind me of Studio Ghibli on a more raw and early stage but with the same underlying feeling.
This is the best animated film of 1952:
Best Animated Film of Each Year
I had no idea what was happening in this movie but some of the animation was nice. A lot of these older animated features tend to substitute wild animated sequences for a good story and this one is no exception. I wish there was more to keep me interested.
What the literal hell? I'll give Kevin. He had to bring a pre-60s foreign animated movie. He went about this business admirably, dug this bad boy, and presented it to us. And we sat there for about 63 minutes with little to no idea what we were watching. Maybe it played better in its original language? Maybe it was some scathing dissection of the socio-politcal environment in post-war France? Maybe it was just some tale of a wiseacre mockingbird working hard to hook up a young couple? We saw the incomplete version which was cut with new animation some 30 years later to complete the filmmaker's version. The animation is gorgeous and the story's a mess but what I saw makes me curious to see the complete film.
I'd seen and loved the “completed” 1980 cut of this film (Le Roi et l'Oiseau / The King and the Mockingbird), so I jumped at the chance to see the earlier cut that inspired Hayao Miyazaki (1952's La Bergère et le Ramoneur / The Curious Adventures of Mr. Wonderbird). The short version is: I can't definitively say which is the better cut; I like different parts of each version and ideally I'd combine the two.
If I had this with the original French audio I'd be able to give a more fair comparison. The English dub of this isn't great, but it's not the worst I've heard either (though the audio quality leaves much to be desired). I did sorely…

It's always funny coming to the end of a movie and learning that there is a more complete version that you missed. This was weird but fun. I liked a lot of the animation, the weird plot wasn't bad though it was a little slow.
Seeing as this is the unfinished version I thought it was going to be a lot more different then the full one from 30 years later
Really weird story. I had no clue what was happening during this whole movie. Most of these points are for all those golden moments in this film that had some solid animation skills put in. The robots hands animated so damn fluid my mind was blown. Really interesting history with this film, definitely need to check out the finished version by the director.
