8 Day Iceland Itinerary: The Ultimate Road Trip

Iceland is a beautiful and incredibly diverse island located just south of the Arctic Circle.

The dramatic landscapes of this Nordic nation are characterized by volcanos, waterfalls, lava fields, fjords, glaciers, hot springs, and desolate highlands.

The nickname, the land of fire and ice, could not be more appropriate.

The island is rather small, you could technically drive its entirety in 24 hours. However, it has an overwhelming number of attractions and requires many trips to see everything.

The south coast has a huge concentration of natural wonders and is relatively close to the capital city, Reykjavik, therefore is the most popular region.

This 8 day Iceland itinerary covers the south coast’s most popular attractions. Throughout the trip we stayed in three towns: Vik, Hof, and Reykjavik. This itinerary is best followed spring – fall but is possible in winter as well.

No matter the time of year, the weather can (and will) change drastically throughout your trip. For up to date road conditions be sure to keep an eye on road.is.

Itinerary Note: On days that involved weather disturbances I’ll list our original plans and what we did instead.

Day 1 of 8 Day Iceland Itinerary Along Ring Road

Fly into Keflavik International Airport

If coming from the U.S. or Canada you will likely arrive early following a red eye flight, we landed at 6:30 am. Very little is open at this hour, so we got our grocery shopping out of the way.

We shopped at Netto, which had a wide variety of affordable vegan and gluten free options, in addition to typical groceries.

I packed a soft cooler in my suitcase to house the cold grocery items on travel days.

Soak In The Blue Lagoon Iceland

Keflavik Airport to Blue Lagoon – 20 minutes (23 km / 14 miles)

The Blue Lagoon is an outdoor geothermal spa made famous by its milky blue, mineral-rich water.

The precise combination of sulfur and silica are what creates the pool’s enchanting color.

This popular spa has been named one of the Top 25 Wonders of the World and is one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions.

The cost varies depending on time of day, we paid about 7300 ISK ($55 USD) per person to visit.

We booked one of the earliest available time slots and spent 4 hours here.

In addition to pool access, our fee included lockers, a spacious changing room with showers, towels, one free drink (a fruit smoothie or alcoholic beverage), and a silica mud mask.

There was ample free parking.

This isn’t the most affordable excursion, but I thought it was absolutely worth it.

Plus, you can stay as long as you’d like, within business hours.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Blue Lagoon to Seljalandsfoss & Gljufrafoss – 2 hours, 10 minutes (160 km / 99 miles)

After a morning spent in the Blue Lagoon, we headed out to see the South Coast’s famous waterfalls.

Seljalandsfoss is one of the country’s most famous and visited waterfalls.

There’s a wide cavern behind the 197 foot (60 m) falls which allows visitors to fully encircle the waterfall, providing a unique perspective of this stunning sight.

Tip: This location is especially popular at daybreak, when you can watch the sun rise from behind the waterfall.

Parking was 700ISK ($5 USD) and had restrooms. The waterfall is just a short walk from the parking lot.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall – 8 day Iceland Itinerary

Take A Short Hike To Gljufrafoss From Seljalandsfoss

Gljufrafoss (also known as Gljúfrabúi) is accessed from this same parking lot as Seljalandsfoss but requires a short hike.

Considering the popularity of the aforementioned falls, Gljufrafoss is much lesser known and is considered a hidden gem in the area.

Gljufrafoss translates to “canyon falls” which is exactly what you’ll see when you arrive.

The 130 foot (40 m) waterfall cascades into a small canyon which you can access by following the stream through a small slot canyon.

Note: There are times when the water level is high and it’s not possible to access the canyon.

To get here you’ll have to hike about 1 mile north of Seljalandsfoss, the path is easy and passes two smaller waterfalls. Once at the small slot canyon you will be walking through a stream.

Note: You will definitely need waterproof clothing at both Gljufrafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Skogafoss Waterfall

Seljalandsfoss & Gljufrafoss to Skogafoss – 25 minutes (30 km / 18 miles)

Up next was Skogafoss, only about 25 minutes from the previous two falls.

Skogafoss is one of the most recognizable and most visited waterfalls in Iceland.

At 197 foot (60 m), it’s the same height as the previously mentioned, Seljalandsfoss, however its width is an astounding 85 feet (25 m).

Standing near the base of this powerful waterfall, admiring its force, is an incredible experience.

Fun Fact: Due to the amount of spray the waterfall produces, a rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.

After viewing Skogafoss from below, go see it from above!

Upon climbing nearly 400 steps to the overlook you’ll be rewarded with a unique perspective of the waterfall, as well as views of Iceland’s southern coastline.

This is also the beginning of a popular (and difficult) hike, Fimmvorduhals Pass.

We followed the trail for a short bit and were rewarded with beautiful views, this was one of my favorite spots we visited on the first day of our Iceland road trip!

The parking lot is free and the base of the waterfall is just a short, 5 minute walk from the lot.

Bathrooms on site require a fee.

Itinerary Note: Skogar Museum and Kvernufoss are located just minutes from Skogafoss. However, with timing it was not possible for us to visit these on Day 1, we will return here on Day 2.

Night 1: Vik, Iceland

Skogafoss to Vik – 30 minutes (33 km / 20 miles)

Wow, Day 1 was a very long day! We ended our day at Black Beach Suites which we booked through Airbnb.

The suites are located just outside Vik, near popular Reynisfjara Beach.

Our luxury suite was equipped with a kitchen, patio, and ocean views.

Black Beach Suites offered the privacy and convenience of an Airbnb but with all the perks of a hotel such as a restaurant, bar, concierge, and daily house cleaning.

The Vik area is an excellent base on Iceland’s southern coast, thanks to it’s close proximity to many popular attractions.

In addition to this, the town has just about every thing you could need despite its small size.

Tip: Vik is a great place to see the northern lights late-September through late-April.

Additional Places To Stay In Vik:

  • Farmhouse Lodge
  • Vik Cottages
  • Hótel Kría
  • Hótel Vik
  • Puffin Hotel Vik

Day 2 of 8 Day Iceland Itinerary Along Ring Road

Reynisfjara Beach

Vik to Reynisfjara Beach – 10 minutes (10 km / 6 miles)

Reynisfjara Beach is a world famous black sand beach best known for its enormous and other-worldly basalt stacks. T

he basalt columns are a highly unusual geological phenomenon caused by the contraction of rapidly cooling volcanic rock.

Note: This beach is best explored at low tide, high tide should be avoided.

Iceland 8 day road trip itinerary 9
Basalt stacks Reynisfjara Beach – 8 day Iceland Itinerary

As magnificent as the basalt stacks are, it’s not all there is to see here!

The black sand beach has many unique rock formations, a cave named Hálsanefshellir, and beautiful sea stacks just off the shore.

In fact, National Geographic voted Reynisfjara one of the Top 10 non-tropical beaches on the planet.

There is free parking and a restaurant just a short walk from the beach.

Important Note: Deadly sneaker-waves and rip currents are common at this beach. It is recommended you stay at least 100 feet (30 m) from the water and do not turn your back on the ocean. The only land south of Vík and Reynisfjara is Antarctica… Let that sink in, Antarctica. That’s a lot of unobstructed space for Atlantic currents to travel before pummeling into Iceland.

Sea stacks at Reynisfjara Beach can only be explored at low tide – 8 day Iceland Itinerary

Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool

Reynisfjara Beach to Seljavallalaug – 35 minutes (42 km / 26 miles)

While visiting Iceland you must see Seljavallalaug!

This photogenic outdoor pool is fed by geothermal waters and maintains a temperature of around 68° to 86°F (20° – 30°C).

Seljavallalaug is tucked into a quiet valley below Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, and surrounded by lush green peaks, waterfalls, and dramatic volcanic rock.

From the parking lot you’ll hike just under a mile (roughly 1.6 km) to the pool.

The hike is flat for the entirety but does require crossing a rocky river, waterproof shoes and a hiking pole would be best for this portion.

The valley feels serene and secluded considering its close proximity to Route 1, Iceland’s main highway.

This swimming pool, built in 1923, was created to teach Icelandic people to swim, a skill which was not common among locals in that era. Today, Icelanders must learn to swim before graduating school.

The pool and changing rooms are free! This is great, however, it means nobody maintains the site. Be sure to treat the site with respect, anything you bring in needs to be carried out, including trash.

Note: Unfortunately, this site has gotten a bad rep in recent years due to mistreatment by tourists. We didn’t swim or use the changing rooms but from what we could tell everything was clean upon our visit.

The parking lot at the trailhead is free and has no services.

Learn About Icelandic History at Skogar Museum

Seljavallalaug to Skogar Museum & Kvernufoss – 11 minutes (10 km / 6 miles)

The Skogar Museum is a 3 site complex exploring early Icelandic history.

The museum, which has been open since 1949, has over 15,000 regional folk relics dating back to the Viking days and full scale model turf-homes.

Hours vary seasonally, the cost is 2000 ISK ($15 USD), parking is free.

Kvernufoss Waterfall

Right next to Skogar Museum, is Kvernufoss Waterfall.

Kvernufoss is a 98 foot (30 m) waterfall just hidden behind a canyon wall.

You can walk into a spacious cavern behind the waterfall, as at Seljalandsfoss, although here you’ll find much less people around.

That’s because this waterfall is often overshadowed by it’s extremely popular neighbor, Skogafoss.

It’s an easy half mile walk to the waterfall, however you do have to climb a small ladder at the beginning of the hike.

To access this hike, park at the Skogar Museum. Parking is free if you visit the museum but paid if you’re only hiking.

Note: The waterfall is on private property, but visitors are allowed, be respectful.

Admire The Beauty (& Puffins) At Dyrhólaey Viewpoint

Skogar Museum & Kvernufoss to Dyrhólaey Viewpoint – 25 minutes (26 km / 16 miles)

Dyrhólaey is a small promontory at one of the southernmost points in Iceland.

It’s home to a historic lighthouse and offers fantastic views of surrounding rock formations, including a massive rock arch.

In addition to this, Dyrhólaey has prime views of the Atlantic Ocean meeting the black sand coastline, a clash which creates an alluring color contrast.

If visiting in summer, this is a prime place to spot puffins.

Puffins can be spotted here from about April – August and are most active in the morning.

Note: Dyrhólaey may be closed or have limited hours while the puffins are nesting.

Parking is free and the best viewpoints are only a short walk from the lot. There are no services on site.

Night 2: Vik, Iceland

Dyrhólaey Viewpoint to Vik – 20 minutes (19 km / 12 miles)

We spent our second night in Iceland in Vik, again at Black Beach Suites.

After a full day of very rainy adventures, we just wanted to relax at the Airbnb.

But if you’re up for it, there are plenty of things to do in Vik.

These are some of the best things to do in Vik, Iceland:

  • Vík í Mýrdal Church
  • Voyages Friendship Statue
  • Smiðjan Brugghús Brewery
  • Black Sand Beach Vik
  • Icelandic Lava Show
  • Strondin Restaurant

Day 3 of 8 Day Iceland Itinerary Along Ring Road

On Day 3 of this 8 day Iceland road trip itinerary we’ll be traveling from Vik to Hof.

It’s about 2 hours between the two towns with some great stops in between.

Note: If you need groceries or gas, load up in Vik. As you move east of Vik services become sparse. Plan to keep your gas above half a tank at all times, gas stations will become few and far between.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Vik to Fjaðrárgljúfur – 50 minutes (69 km / 43 miles)

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a 325 feet (100 m) deep and 1.25 miles (2 km) long jaw-dropping bright green canyon.

The steep palagonite walls were carved out by runoff from a glacial lake, today the Fjaðrá River slowly meanders through the canyon.

Justin Bieber made this previously little-known canyon famous by featuring it in his 2015 “I’ll Show You” music video.

Unfortunately, the music video attracted an unsustainable amount of visitors in a very short period, causing the Environment Agency of Iceland to close the canyon for a few years.

But the canyon is now open, as clear walking paths and established viewpoints have been installed.

Parking and restrooms on site are free, to reach the end of the canyon will require a 1 mile (1.6 km) hike.

Be sure to go to the last viewpoint for the best vantage. The trail is steep initially but doable for all skill levels.

Hike in Skaftafell National Park

Fjaðrárgljúfur to Skaftafell National Park – 1 hour (78 km / 48 miles)

Skaftafell is a nature reserve located within Vatnajökull National Park.

The park is most known for its hiking thanks to a number of easy treks.

The most popular hikes are Svartifoss and Svínafellsjökull.

Svartifoss is a waterfall surrounded by dramatic basalt columns that can be reached following a short hike uphill.

Svínafellsjökull will get you up close with a glacier succeeding a short, easy walk.

Tip: Be sure to check out the Svínafellsjökull Viewpoint for a superb prospective of the glacier and surrounding landscape.

Skaftafell has a small parking fee which can be paid on your phone. There’s also restrooms, dining, food trucks, and a gift shop on site.

Night 3: Hof, Iceland

Skaftafell National Park to Hof – 20 minutes (19 km / 12 miles)

Our Airbnb was a tiny home in Hof, a small farming village with almost no services. We stayed here due to its close proximity to popular attractions such as Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach, and the aforementioned Skaftafell National Park.

There was one restaurant in Hof at Adventure Hotel Hof.

If you’d prefer to stay in a town with more amenities, consider Hofn, located another 1.5 hours east.

Additional Places To Stay In & Near Hof, Iceland:

Day 4 of 8 Day Iceland Itinerary Along Ring Road

We’ve hit the point in our itinerary where weather begins to disrupt our plans.

I will note what our original plan was and what we did as an alternative.

Kayak Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon & Glacier Hike Iceland

Our original plan for Day 4 was to do a glacier hike and kayak combination through Glacier and Volcano Expeditions.

The 7 hour tour included kayaking through Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon and hiking onto Iceland’s largest glacier.

Unfortunately, our trip was canceled due to extreme winds caused by an incoming storm.

The cancellation was for everyone’s safety and while we were disappointed it was very understandable. Glacier and Volcano Expeditions issued a full refund. When I return to Iceland I hope to book another tour through them.

Following the kayaking and hiking tour we planned to quickly see Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – Main Viewpoint

Hof to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – 30 minutes (38 km / 24 miles)

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is the biggest draw to this region and a very popular stop on any Iceland itinerary.

The lagoon has bright blue, calm water dotted with icebergs which have broken off Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier.

The water and ice chunks then flow out to the Atlantic Ocean through a narrow waterway.

Note: Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier is a part of Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest in Iceland and Europe.

The fish-filled lagoon is a hot spot for seals, especially during winter months. We spotted a seal immediately upon our arrival in late September.

Fun Fact: With a maximum depth of 813 feet (248 m), Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s deepest lake.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon has three viewpoints.

The main viewpoint is furthest east on Route 1, located by the bridge. You can’t miss the pull off, this is where you’ll find guided expeditions and tour buses galore.

It is worth stopping here as it offers the best vantage point of the lagoon.

This parking lot had a small fee and was just a short walk from the lagoon. There were restrooms and food trucks on site.

Tip: Wear some extra layers here, the wind coming off the glacier lagoon has an extra bite to it.

Iceland day road trip itinerary6
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – You can see a small black spot at the bottom, center of this photo. It’s a seal just under the surface, it didn’t want to come out for a proper photo unfortunately.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – Lesser Known Viewpoints

Now that you’ve seen the main viewpoint I recommend getting a (significantly) quieter view of the lagoon.

There are two additional viewpoints located off Route 1, both are west of the main lot, on the other side of the bridge.

The small lots are clearly marked and are both free of charge.

Take a short walk from the lot, over a hill, and you’ll find wonderful, serene views of the lagoon.

There’s a trail following the edge of the lagoon. We followed the trail west and saw nobody for an hour — a stark contrast to the main viewing area.

Out here you can easily hear the icebergs crack and drip as they move with the gentle tide.

This ended up being one of my favorite parts of our 8 day Iceland road trip.

Iceland day road trip itinerary9
Following a trail around Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – 8 day Iceland Itinerary

Diamond Beach

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon to Diamond Beach – 2 minutes (.25 miles / .4 km)

As the icebergs break away from the glacier and plummet into the lagoon, they slowly melt and drift out to sea.

At sea they are polished smooth by the waves of the North Atlantic before being washed ashore the black sand beach.

This stretch of beach, referred to as Diamond Beach by tourists (although Breiðamerkursandur is it’s actual name), is always covered in translucent ice sculptures that sparkle in the sun.

The day we visited there were relatively few ice chunks melting on the beach, but it was still an absolutely spectacular and unique sight to see.

Here you can also spot the bright blue waters of the lagoon intersecting with the dark Atlantic Ocean, creating quite the display of colors.

The parking lot is located on the other side of Route 1, across from Jökulsárlón’s main parking lot.

Parking is free and there are no restrooms or services on site.

Iceland day road trip itinerary8
Glacier chunks on Diamond Beach – 8 day Iceland Itinerary

Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Diamond Beach to Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon – 10 minutes (6 miles / 10 km)

Fjallsárlón is another glacier lagoon located just 10 minutes west of Jökulsárlón.

Since it’s significantly smaller than Jökulsárlón, it’s less visited – although beautiful and unique in it’s own way.

Here, looming under Iceland’s largest volcano and highest peak, Öræfajökull, you get a much closer view of the glacier and the iceberg chunks as they fall into the lagoon.

There’s a small parking fee payable by phone and you’ll find a service center, cafe, and restrooms on site.

Night 4: Hof, Iceland

Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon to Hof – 20 minutes (17 miles / 28 km)

We spent the afternoon relaxing in the Airbnb while the wind howled against the tiny frame of our house.

The quiet afternoon was welcomed after so many days of exploring.

Day 5 of 8 Day Iceland Itinerary Along Ring Road

Day 5 of the 8 day Iceland road trip itinerary is another travel day.

From Hof we will head to Reykjavik, the capital city.

Hof to Reykjavik – 4 hours, 20 minutes (213 miles / 342 km)

Our original plan was to keep Day 5 open and treat it as flex day, if there was anything more we wanted to do in Hof, Vik, or anywhere in between, it could be done on this day.

As it turned out, this was the worst day, weather-wise, of the entire trip.

So the goal of the day was to get from Hof to Reykjavik as quickly and safely as possible.

We left first thing in the morning, the wind was blowing so hard that waterfalls were flying upwards.

However, for the most part, the rain wasn’t too bad. For that we were lucky, Route 1 closed behind us as the storm worsened in the afternoon.

Relax At Sky Lagoon Iceland

We decided to spend the stormy afternoon relaxing at the Sky Lagoon, a spa and geothermal pool overlooking the ocean.

Sky Lagoon sets itself apart with “The Ritual,” a 7 step ode to Icelandic bathing traditions.

To participate in the ritual you’ll soak in the warm infinity pool, followed by a cold plunge.

Then enter the turf house for a sauna experience, cool mist, self-applied body scrub, steam room, and shower before returning to soak in the pool.

It’s a unique way to experience Iceland’s ancient bathing traditions in a modern, nordic-inspired setting.

The only downside? We visited on a day with terrible weather.

The wind and rain whipped around us creating white caps on the pools surface. Visibility was so poor there were times we couldn’t see the short distance across the pool.

However, while the howling wind and rough waves of the Atlantic Ocean were unpleasant from the outdoor pool, they were anything but from the peaceful sauna…

Iceland road trip itinerary2
Sky Lagoon sauna in Reykjavik, Iceland – 8 day Iceland Itinerary

I consider myself pretty laid back and actually enjoyed the outrageousness of sitting outside in such a storm.

Although I wouldn’t recommend visiting in this weather for most, Sky Lagoon is most definitely worth a visit on a day with pleasant weather.

Icelandic Phallological Museum

After the windy spa experience, we visited Iceland’s most peculiar museum.

The Icelandic Phallological Museum is, well, a penis museum.

It houses over 200 “parts” of land and sea creatures, the worlds largest (and probably only) display of its kind.

Along with each display is information regarding the animal’s unique mating habits. As odd as it sounds, it’s actually a very informative and professional museum.

The museum is open daily and costs 2500 ISK ($19 USD) per adult, there is no parking.

Not your thing? Check out the National Museum of Iceland, Reykajvik Maritime Museum, Iceland Punk Museum, or the Reykjavik Art Museum instead.

Night 5: Reykjavik, Iceland

Our Reykjavik condo was centrally located near the intersection of Ægisgata and Geirsgata, overlooking the Old Harbor.

The location couldn’t have been better, we were within walking distance of museums, nightlife, and restaurants.

Our first night in Reykjavik we had a lovely plant based dinner at Vegan World Peace.

We also attempted to see the northern lights from Grótta Lighthouse, just a five minute drive from downtown.

Day 6 of 8 Day Iceland Itinerary Along Ring Road

Join A Whale Watching Tour

On Day 6 we were supposed to do a whale watching tour but it was cancelled because yesterday’s big storm was still clearing out.

Our plan was to do some shopping and sight seeing around Reykjavik in the morning and a 2 hour whale tour in the afternoon.

Humpback, Blue, Fin, Minke, Sperm and Orcas can all be found around Iceland.

Most commonly spotted near Reykjavik are white-beaked dolphins, harbor porpoises, minke whales, and in summer, humpback whales.

We booked the Premium Whale Watching Tour, a small group expedition on a 12 person boat, through Elding Whale Watching.

We received a full refund for our cancellation and I’d be happy to rebook with Elding whenever I return to Iceland.

You can book their Classic Whale Watching Tour or the Premium Whale Watching Tour.

If there’s a chance of bad weather, book the Classic Whale Watching Tour. It’s a much bigger boat, with plenty of indoor space, therefore doesn’t cancel due to weather as often as the Premium Whale Watching Tour.

Note: For the best whale watching opportunities, you’ll want to head to North Iceland, however that did not fit within our 8 Day Iceland road trip itinerary.

Day Trip To The Snæfellsnes Peninsula From Reykjavik

Instead of whale watching we spent our day exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, which turned out to be a lovely treat.

In fact, it was one of my favorite days during our 8 day Iceland road trip.

The peninsula extends 55 miles (88.5 km) into the Atlantic Ocean and is located 2 hours from Reykjavik.

Here you’ll find incredible views which encapsulate many of Iceland’s varying landscapes within one small region.

While you could easily spend days exploring the area, a day trip from Reykjavik is possible and will provide a glimpse at the highlights.

The below itinerary will follow Route 54 along the peninsula’s coast.

Trust me, the scenic views from the drive itself are well worth the time it takes to get here from Reykjavik.

Kirkjufell Mountain

Reykjavik to Kirkjufell Mountain – 2 hours, 20 minutes (111 miles / 179 km)

Kirkjufell mountain means “church mountain” thanks to it’s steeple-like shape.

This is one of Iceland’s most photographed locations owing to Kirkjufellsfoss, a waterfall which perfectly frames this unique mountain.

Fun Fact: This was a popular Game of Thrones filming location.

Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall is accessible just a short walk from the parking lot.

The lot requires a fee which can be paid on your phone, there are no services on site.

This location is located just minutes from Grundarfjörður, a small town with full services and good dining options.

Skarðsvík Beach

Kirkjufell Mountain to Skarðsvík Beach – 35 minutes (24 miles / 39 km)

Skarðsvík is a golden, sandy beach surrounded by grassy volcanic rock. The bright sand is a stark contrast from Iceland’s typically moody, black sand beaches.

As with most beaches in Iceland, the waves here can be very aggressive. It is advised to leave ample space between you and the water.

Part of the fun in visiting this beach is driving the narrow, winding road which has excellent views of Snæfellsjökull Glacier and grassy lava fields.

The short drive takes you from Route 54 to the free parking lot.

Once you’ve parked the beach is just a short walk away, there are no services on site.

Climb Saxhóll Crater

Skarðsvík Beach to Saxhóll Crater – 10 minutes (6 miles / 9 km)

This is one of the most popular craters on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula thanks to its accessibility.

The 325 foot (100 m) crater was formed by a volcanic explosion 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, and resulted in a massive lava field which now surrounds the area.

The top of Saxhóll offers an excellent vantage point of the peninsula tip — with the Atlantic Ocean to the west and north and the stunning Snæfellsjökull glacier to the east.

Parking is free and the crater is a quick 5 minute climb up a metal staircase. There are no services on site.

The Arnarstapi Coast

Saxhóll Crater to Arnarstapi Coast – 21 minutes (16 miles / 26 km)

How can I put into words the beauty of the Arnarstapi Coast?

The dramatic coastal cliffs are characterized by basalt columns, natural rock arches, and offshore sea stacks.

The shoreline was formed by successive lava flows and today is sculpted by the relentless and harsh waves of the North Atlantic.

You could spend hours here, mesmerized by the raucous waves pummeling the cliffside coast.

Iceland road trip itinerary7
Arnarstapi Coast Viewpoint – 8 day Iceland Itinerary

The Arnarstapi Coast Viewpoint has a free parking lot.

The lot wasn’t clearly marked, however the tour bus made it quite obvious we were in the right place.

You’ll know you’re there when you spot a huge stone statue of what appears to be a troll.

The main observation deck is a short walk from here.

There were no public restrooms, but there were a few restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

To break from the crowds, take a walk along the steep coastline. There’s a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) trail that connects Arnarstapi to Hellnar.

Be sure to snap a picture of stunning Gatklettur Arch, just a short walk from the main observation deck.

I only wish we’d had more time here! If I were to spend multiple days on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, I would certainly consider Arnarstapi or Hellnar as my base.

Visit Búðakirkja – The Black Church Of Búðir

Arnarstapi Coast to Búðakirkja – 15 minutes (11 miles / 19 km)

The Búðakirkja church is a highly sought after tourist stop thanks to its jet black exterior, remote location, and jaw-dropping backdrop.

The church, which resides in the hamlet of Búðir, is located in a lava field at the westernmost tip of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

This is an area which offers both breathtaking mountain and ocean backdrops side-by-side.

The original church was built in 1703 and was most recently reconstructed in 1987. On site you’ll find a small historic graveyard as well as relics from the original building, such as a bell and chalice.

Drive The Golden Circle In Iceland

The Golden Circle is one of the most traveled routes in Iceland. The route features geothermal wonders, a massive waterfall, and a colorful crater.

Without stopping, the circle takes about 3 hours to complete.

Most people spend a full day exploring the many excellent attractions along this popular drive.

Thingvellir National Park

Reykjavik to Thingvellir National Park – 40 minutes (30 miles / 47 km)

Thingvellir National Park is famous for a few things.

First is Althing (Alþingi), the supreme national parliament of Iceland. This was the first, and remains the world’s oldest, democratic national parliament.

It was founded in 930 AD at the site where Thingvellir National Park is currently located.

Thingvellir also has a significant geological feature in that it’s the point where the separating North American and Eurasian plates are visible.

This is the only place in the world where you can see tectonic plates separating on land.

The plates are currently moving apart at the rate of about 2 cm (0.79 in) per year.

You can even snorkel between the plates! We skipped the snorkeling this time and simply walked between the plates.

Iceland Geysir Geothermal Field

Thingvellir National Park to Geysir Geothermal Field – 50 minutes (37 miles / 60 km)

Up next on the Golden Circle route is Geysir Geothermal Field.

Located in Haukadalur, this well-known, high-temperature geothermal area is a hot spot for geyser’s and boiling mud pits.

The Geysir Geothermal Field is located in a neovolcanic region. Simply put, this means there is a lot of volcanic activity happening here, but not in the traditional sense.

Geysir is one of the best-known geysers in the world and has lended it’s name to the world’s spouting hot springs.

Today Geysir only erupts from time to time and has been fenced off, but you can walk very close to it.

Strokkur is now the star of the geothermal field, erupting up to 80 – 115 feet (25-35 m) in the air every 8 minutes.

The geothermal activity all occurs just a short walk from the free parking lot, most people need about 30 – 45 minutes to explore the small area.

The parking lot also has a restaurant, gift shop, and restrooms.

Gullfoss Waterfall

Geysir Geothermal Field to Gullfoss – 10 minutes (6 miles / 10 km)

Gullfoss translates to “Golden Waterfall” the name behind The Golden Circle.

This massive waterfall of the Hvítá River cascades down two steps into a deep gorge.

The powerful waterfall is one of the most beautiful sights in Iceland, and is especially unique because the falls can only be viewed from above.

Gullfoss is just a short walk from the free parking lot, there are varying viewpoints so be sure to plan for time to enjoy the various angles.

There are paid restrooms on site or free restrooms in the Gullfoss Visitor Center.

Soak In Iceland’s Secret Lagoon

Gullfoss to The Secret Lagoon – 30 minutes (18 miles / 30 km)

If time permits, watch geysers erupt from the comfort of a hot spring at The Secret Lagoon.

Vaðmálahver, Básahver, and Litli Geysir put on a show for guests and provide 100% of the water supply in the lagoon.

Fun Fact: This is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland, built in 1891.

Hours vary seasonally and the cost is 3000 ISK per adult ($23 USD), there’s free parking on site for guests.

Kerid Crater

The Secret Lagoon to Kerid Crater – 30 minutes (24 miles / 39 km)

Up next is colorful Kerid Crater.

Kerid is a volcanic crater lake composed of red, rather than black, volcanic rock surrounded by vibrant green moss.

The red hue is caused by iron oxidation within the lava.

The 3,000 year old crater is 180 feet (55 m) deep and a staggering 890 feet (270 m) across.

The land owners charge a fee of 400 ISK ($3 USD) to visit.

Once you’ve parked, it’s a short 1 mile (1.6 km) walk around the unique crater. There are no services on site.

Spend The Afternoon In Reykjavik

Kerid Crater to Reykjavik – 56 minutes (43 miles./ 69 km)

Alright, to be honest, the above is what we were supposed to do on our last full day in Iceland.

We drove up to Thingvellir National Park and after about 30 minutes it began snowing, hard.

After visiting Althing and the tectonic plates we quickly scrapped our plans and retreated to lower elevation.

Neither of us had any desire to drive in the snow, nor did we have an appropriate car.

It rained all day in Reykjavik (Reykjavik is lower elevation than The Golden Circle and therefore has milder weather).

We spent the day enjoying coffee at a cafe overlooking the harbor and shopping. It wasn’t the day we planned but it certainly wasn’t a bad one.

Hike The Fagradalsfjall Volcano Iceland

Reykjavik to Fagradalsfjall Volcano – 55 minutes (32 miles / 51 km)

Fagradalsfjall is shield volcano located in an active volcano field which goes by the same name.

The area is full of eruptive fissures, cones, and lava fields, but has not seen much action in recent history.

That is until March of 2021 when Fagradalsfjall began erupting after 6,000 years of dormancy.

Note: A shield volcano is low and broad compared to typical cinder cone volcanos which are very steep. From it flows highly fluid lava, which travels farther with thinner flows than the more viscous lava from the explosive stratovolcanos.

Incredibly, the volcano can be safely viewed from a distance with just a bit of hiking. In order to do this you’ll follow hiking trail C which will lead you to two viewpoints.

One of them is viewpoint N which offers a view over the massive lava field. The hike to this viewpoint is a short distance and doesn’t involve much elevation change.

The other one is viewpoint L which is higher up the mountain and provides an excellent view over the crater. Viewpoint L involves a 1,500 foot (457 m) elevation change and is 5.6 miles round trip. Trust me, it’s worth the hike!

Parking is free, there are various lots which all take you to the same trail. There are portable restrooms on site and food trucks.

Note: The Fagradalsfjall volcano is no longer active, however you can still take a short hike to see the lava field.

Return Home! Keflavík Airport

Fagradalsfjall to Keflavík Airport – 35 minutes (22 miles / 36 km)

The volcano is only 35 minutes from Keflavík Airport, making this a great stop on your way to or from the airport!
