Using a LINK card

If you are approved for SNAP benefits, you will be mailed a LINK card. If you receive cash benefits as well as SNAP benefits, your cash benefits will also be put on the LINK card.

When you get the LINK card, you should choose a personal identification number (PIN). The PIN is required every time you use the LINK card. You can use the LINK card at store Point of Sale terminals like cash registers (POS terminals). They scan the card and deduct the amount of the purchase from your account. SNAP benefits are different from TANF cash benefits in the recipient's account. SNAP benefits can only be used for food purchases. Recipients cannot cash in SNAP benefits.

You should never let anyone else know your PIN number. If you give your PIN to someone else and they use your benefits, the Department of Human Services (DHS) will not replace your benefits. If your card is lost or stolen, your benefits cannot be used unless the thief also knows your PIN number. You should never write your PIN number on your card or on the sleeve that is given to you to keep your card from getting damaged. If it is written on the card, your benefits can be stolen. If that happens, the benefits will not be replaced by DHS.

If your SNAP benefits are stolen electronically, such as through a skimmer, and you have your LINK card in your possession, you may be able to get the stolen SNAP benefits replaced. You need to file a Report of Electronic Theft form with your local office, online, or by calling 1-800-678-LINK (5465).

You can call (800) 678-LINK or go to the Manage My Illinois LINK Account website to:

  • Check your benefits balance,
  • Select a PIN,
  • See your card use history,
  • Report a lost, stolen, or damaged LINK card, or
  • Request a replacement card.
