Art and Design
‘You will understand how art and design shapes the world and use this to form your own views. You will learn practical and thinking skills to express yourself creatively’.
Students will acquire the technical and thinking skills to devise and manage self-directed creative projects. Students will develop cultural empowerment and show critical autonomy; they will be able to creatively articulate a personal response to their world.
CARE - the curriculum makes use of resources that promote appreciation of diversity. Department formative assessment, focused on steps of progress in a way that supports good mental health.
Inclusive - curriculum assessment resources are created so as to be easily scaffolded at any level. There are model resources for those who cannot access lessons at expected level for the key stage.
Knowledge - supporting knowledge for the curriculum, particularly at KS3 promotes a broad and deep understanding of the subject – how Art and Design relates to our society as well as technical and thinking skills required to create practical work.
Independence - creative tasks encourage an independent response, curriculum project structure is focused on developing the increasing independence demanded at KS4.
Empowerment - formative assessment that promotes regular self-review and creative outcomes that celebrate the individuality of the student.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9):
Year 7: You will learn the practical and thinking skills you need to make your own creative art projects, and how you can improve your work. You will find out about a range of Western and non-Western examples of Art and Design from today and throughout history. You will understand why the Renaissance was so important in Western society and how it shaped how we live today. You will find out about the Creative Industries – jobs that use Art and Design skills.
Year 8: You will learn the practical and thinking skills you need to make your own creative art projects in a wider range of traditional and new media, and how you can improve your work. You will find out about a range of Western and non-Western examples of Art and Design from today and throughout history. You will understand how the Renaissance and Modernism in Western society shaped how we live today and how Art and Design communicates cultural and individual identity. You will find out more about the Creative Industries – jobs that use Art and Design skills - looking at case studies of creative professionals.
Year 9: You will learn the practical and thinking skills you need to make more personal and independent creative art projects in a wider range of traditional and new media, and how you can improve your work. You will find out about a range of Western and non-Western examples of Art and Design from today and throughout history. You will understand more about how, following the Renaissance, a range of different Modernist movements and Post Modern / Contemporary art in Western society shaped how we live today and how Art and Design communicates cultural and individual identity. You will find out more about the Creative Industries – jobs that use Art and Design skills - researching learning and career paths.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11):
GCSE students work towards AQA GCSE ‘Art, Craft and Design’.
Year 10: You will develop understanding of the practical and thinking skills of the creative process through progressively more independent projects. Your research will make connections between Art and Design / Creative Industry sources from a range different places and time periods. You will experiment with a wide range of traditional and new media, choosing some to specialise in. This will lead you to make original and personal artwork outcomes which will be submitted for GCSE assessment at the end of the course.
Year 11: You will consolidate understanding of the practical and thinking skills of the creative process by refining your work and completing a full independent project (The Externally Set Assignment, Jan – April). Your research will make connections between Art and Design / creative industry sources from a range different places and time periods. You will develop and refine your skills in traditional and new media focusing on personally chosen specialisms. This will lead you to make original and personal artwork outcomes which will be submitted for GCSE assessment at the end of the course.
Key Stage 5 (A-Levels):
A-Level students work towards AQA A-Level ‘Art, Craft and Design’
Year 12: You will develop higher level understanding of the practical and thinking skills of the creative process by completing extended independent projects. Your research will make connections between Art and Design / Creative Industry sources from a range different places and time periods challenging you to creatively explore traditional and non-traditional approaches. You will develop and refine high level skills in traditional and new media focusing on personally chosen specialisms. You will use personalised feedback to organise your own learning journey.
Year 13: You will consolidate higher level understanding of the practical and thinking skills of the creative process by completing extended fully independent personal projects (The Personal Investigation Sept - Jan and The Externally Set Assignment, Feb – April). Your research will make connections between Art and Design /creative industry sources focusing on an area of specialism that supports your personal. You will consolidate high level skills in traditional and new media focusing on personally chosen specialisms. You will use personalised feedback to organise your own fully independent learning journey.
