Jenkins is a legit freak and was ranked 6th in Feldman's freak list. He will come in and play meaningful snaps right away. He will bring much needed run defense in our division and will develop into a BJ Hill level pass rusher.

But the best thing about him is his leadership. He was a captain at Michigan and is well respected. He brings charisma and a hard work attitude. He is our next Bell for the d-line and his intangibles may outweigh his play. Look for him to have a "C" on his chest soon and our defense to not be swiss cheese anymore.

I think Jermaine Burton could be a stud

He’s the one who will most likely start and contribute on week 1

Here to place my vote on Burton as well. Could very well have a Joe Mixon type turn around leaving the drama behind and producing out the gates.

u/Educational_Count317 avatar

Not sure that's what Mixon did.

I mean he was obviously referring to the character issues which Mixon did leave behind up until the very end and it's not clear his most recent stuff was totally his fault/doing.

Mixon was also quite good for a long time. A lot of teams would have loved to have him.

I think Burton will give us the most immediate production. He is the only one I can see starting day 1. Long term, Mims will be the best.

Agreed. I think he’s an immediate impact guy and causes fits for defenses…as long as he understands the playbook.

u/thesmokingchairdtcom avatar

I think the Bengals quietly had an outstanding draft on the offensive side of the ball (I haven't looked at the D).

  1. Added Mims to the OL - As long as they have Burrow they should probably take an OL in the 1st round year in and year out. Protect that man.

  2. Jermaine Burton to the WR room - Along with Chase, Higgins, and Iosivas... very solid.

  3. Erick All and Tanner McLachlan to the TE room - I don't know much about Iowa but I know this, they produce TEs. Adding these guys along with Gesicki gives them 2 very promising pieces that will provide more target options as well as more in the way of blocking.

Love this draft. If Burton has the chops they are looking good at WR for the next few years.

Mims

u/VeryRealHuman23 avatar

I know everyone keeps saying we probably won't see him this year because but I do hope we see him taking snaps and getting some work - dude is an animal and the faster we can develope him, the better we will be.

u/cookiesnmilk13 avatar

Who says we won’t see him this year? How many teams in the NFL make it through a whole season without either tackle getting hurt?

u/boomer912 avatar

Historically, not teams with Trent brown lol

u/Original_Blewble avatar

Also likely to see him big packages. Goal line rushes when we have extra linemen out there

u/MrWartortle avatar
More replies

Pretty much everyone. The Enquirer and virtually every draft/sports site calls him a developmental player. And...He can't play guard, so he won't replace Volson, or fill in if Cappa gets hurt again either.

The bigger issue is as a starter in college he only started 8 games and could not finish a couple of those due to injuries. He wasn't able to play a lot, and Nick Saban criticized him for taking himself out of college playoff games and letting down his team.

u/helpmelearn12 avatar

Saban is a brilliant college coach but was a shit pro coach and was talking about a player who turned him down to play for an SEC rival instead.

I don’t really respect his opinion on this matter

*Saban

Just have him shadow Trent Brown all year.

u/VeryRealHuman23 avatar

That is the likely outcome as we have Brown on a 1 year and the Bengals arent about to pay $5 mil -ish to not play the guy.

I dont think we will try to move Mims around but he won't develop without snaps during the season.

If Mims is better, we will definitely pay 5 million for him to be swing tackle lol

Won’t be surprised to see more three tackle sets since we don’t have any great blocking tight ends

u/mrmangan avatar

The jumbo package is going to be awesome but Drew Sample is one of the top blocking TEs in the league.

Put Drew at FB and Mims on the end and run between Mims and Brown. If you can't get 95% of 4th and 1s with that...yikes.

u/VeryRealHuman23 avatar

i hope so too, Joe can cook when he isnt running for his life every other down.

Chase + Tee + Yoshi and the others with enough time will get open, the backfield can only cover for so long...but if they dont have time, we are stuck with quick throws of last year.

u/armed_aperture avatar

I have a feeling Burton will play way more than Yoshi but we’ll see.

How does this have upvotes? Lol

Yeah, I like most of our picks, but I'm not gonna get cute with this one. There's a reason I went into an animated celebration when I heard the name.

Amarius Mims has the potential to be the best player in this draft class. He's an absolute monster of a young man, he's a polished pass protectors, and he's a humble hard worker. I think it's honestly absurd we got him at 18.

The poor guy was perennially hurt during college. He couldn't play half the time because his ankles were hurt. Both ankles. One week his right ankle the next his left. He couldn't finish games.

I just don't see how he'll play much against more agile defenders.

u/J_GASSER27 avatar

Our last pick, seems like an absolute steal. I saw somebody say he could be the next kelce and laughed it off, then I looked him up and realized that actually is definitely his best comp.

Jenkins could be an absolute animal and his number will.be called on early id expect

I would have preferred seeing sanders as our TE or even stover, but I do think both guys we drafted could be great.

Ultimately, I think Burton is going to seem like the best pick at the end of the season. Putting a guy like him in the mix with chase, higgins, gesicki, 2 other capable TEs and several guys that can catch out of the backfield, I simply think we have more weapons than most other people and he has the potential to be the one to feast with this WR situation

u/SnooGuavas1985 avatar

I think going the Iowa TE is a safe bet on TE considering we’ve missed with our recent TE picks and i love the guy out of AZ. And i agree with the kelce Lee comparisons. Everything points to incredible character and work ethic with the downsides for both being small size

Except the TE from Iowa was a transfer to Iowa and has had a back fusion surgery and an acl tear. He's a wildcard

u/J_GASSER27 avatar

To be fair i think thats the only reason he wasn't rated higher than he was. Seems like we got quitw a few guys that would have gone a round or 2 higher, but they had some redflag. Mims: only started 8 games and recently had a pretty bad injury Burton: punched a woman in the face All: injuries Lee: I think we just got really lucky. Mckinney is the one I'm going to watch the most, I really wants us to go with Payton Wilson or the TE sanders. Mckinney strikes me as more of a depth pick, while i believe we could have gotten more with our pick Ultimately I trust the coaches so its just whatever, they came back around 2 fantastic TE picks shortly after, but its definitely something I'll be watching haha

u/SnooGuavas1985 avatar

Injury concerns are fair but he did put up his best numbers after the back surgery at Iowa

u/form_an_opinion avatar

And still led the team in receiving despite missing half the season.

Jermaine Burton hands down. Dude is a certified killer. His tape is insane. Honestly should’ve been drafted in the 1st rd if it weren’t for character concerns imo. I can see him being a day 1 starter and putting the league on notice.

Burton next to Chase? That will create some problems for defenses.

u/MadeByTango avatar

Dude is a certified killer.

Where is her body buried?

u/J_GASSER27 avatar

Technically, Higgins is out actually certified killer

That said holy shit, I have no idea how teams expect to cover against our WRs and TEs, im so excited f9r football to start again

Kris Jenkins I’m highest on

All I’m lowest on. Everyone wants to mention his acl but his microdiscectomy scares me the most. Someone might remember better but Michigan’s medical team advised him not to get it done, he did it anyways and they wouldn’t clear him to play after that. I forget the stat they passed around in residency but it’s “almost” guaranteed a second back procedure will be needed after you have your first. I hope he does well for us

*im not down on All’s athletic ability. He’s a stud.

Different sport, but when Jack Eichel was on the Buffalo Sabres, he went thru an experimental surgery that Buffalo didnt like at all. Hes showing no signs of any issues now that hes on Vegas. Some teams just dont wanna risk anything thats experimental.

Very true. I hope he has a long career for us. Just gives me more concern than an injury that we have good data on recovery and return to activity (like an acl or shoulder etc.)

u/PigScarf avatar

Well without sounding too cold and unfeeling: isn't that mostly his problem unless it pops up in the next few years?

In that same way that we know that MLB catchers are probably going to have knee issues as a result of the careers, this might just be the cost of doing business and the personal discomfort he shoulders later in life.

Is your understanding that it is highly likely that he will have to have this done again before he is 30?

Usually it’s within 10 years of initial surgery (or sooner in the event of a fusion) and yes it does set him up for future issues later on in life. I want him to succeed, I don’t think we’ve ever had a complete modern tight end since…..eifert (kinda?) or what Gresham was supposed to be. Back problems just give me more pause than an acl (but Gronk also had the same label coming into the draft and we know how he did)

u/PigScarf avatar

True, but I don't think a ton of people are worried too much about Kincaid and he had big back issues.

Ultimately, I am sympathetic as a human about how debilitating this could be for the guy moving forward. With that said, if he still wants to play and MDs give him the green light, then the risk of having back issues moving forward is the risk he takes on. It is unlikely that the team will have much use for a 33 year old TE anyway, but it would be a great outcome if he is still around in a decade!

Hoping for the best for both the team and Erick

Shoot I forgot about Kincaid too. Theres a lot people are willing to take on to further their career. That lb’er that pitt took in the 4th (who should’ve been a first) apparently doesn’t have an ACL in his knee (on top of his major injury stuff). That kind of dislocation I don’t want to see on tv 🫣

It’s a pretty minor procedure all things considered. Yes, they often require another procedure, but usually because the patient suffers from degenerative disc disease. I highly doubt that what All has, and instead just ruptured the disc pushing himself too hard in game or in a workout.

Mims. I think he can beat out Trent Brown.

u/PigScarf avatar

I agree. All the sudden I am really comfortable with the tackles after lamenting their play for a decade.

Either a proven player wins RT on a cheap deal with a rookie developing behind him OR the rookie proves he is even better than the proven vet and the team has a great backup on the cheap in Trent.

Either way, I think there are three good options on the team for two spots. History has shown we will probably need all three.

u/Zee_WeeWee avatar

Trent brown is a top 5 RT. If Mims beats him out as a rookie that’s going to be pretty crazy tbh

When was the last time Mims played a whole game without hurting one of his ankles? He was perennially injured. He was able to start only 8 games, and didn't finish many.

Against more agile pros, I wonder how fast he hits the IR.

btw, he won't beat out Trent. If we drafted Fautanu (who was a higher rated tackle who can play guard, and who is more athletic) he absolutely would have beat out Volson. But we are stuck with Volson now.

Mims and Burton.

I’m excited for Mims. Seems like a down to earth guy with great potential as a tackle. I’m also excited for Burton, but he needs to tame some of his attitude problems. I imagine that will happen in the Cincy locker room pretty quickly, especially if it ends up causing a penalty or two

u/emeybee avatar

A little assholery is good for a WR, but I want Burton to be a Chad-type funny asshole, not a AB-type headcase asshole.

  1. Jenkins

  2. Mims

  3. All

For this year, either Jenkins or one of the two TE’s. I think Jenkins will help ease the blow of losing DJ Reader… not replace, no one can replace DJ, but Jenkins has the tools to develop into a starter pretty fast. With the TE’s, I’m excited for Gesicki, but he’s a known quantity and is a pass catcher more than a blocker. All and McLachlan have a full skill set and could quite easily develop into a corner piece of this offense a la Kittle or Kelce

u/Klutzy-Spend-6947 avatar

Mims. If he stays healthy, he is an absolute steal at 18.

u/Opposite-Ad-3933 avatar

Mims. Just stay healthy big fella, and he can be a perennial all pro and the best olineman this franchise has had since Munoz

u/CaseyB859 avatar

Imagine a goal line situation where we go overload to one side and bring Trent down to guard, OBJr over to tackle and Mims as an eligible TE. Run that with a full back and I’d like to see an NFL team have the beef to stop that for less than 4 yards.

u/BlackGabriel avatar

Mims. I love the thought of potentially not being in such dire worry about line

I like Kris Jenkins and I like Amarius Mims and I like Jermaine Burton...

Im super high on eric all something about iowa TEs they're always at least a solid role guy

u/Zee_WeeWee avatar

I think mims can be our Sewell for over a decade. He’s not a technician like that yet but he’s an Athletic/size monster. With our bad luck he’ll be starting by playoffs

u/LMtOSU avatar

I like the idea of our top 3 picks for different reasons:

  1. Mims is going to be the new jumbo tight end, I think. And if things go back to the 2 seasons burrow was healthy, then he will probably get meaningful snaps as a backup if/when the team is blowing other teams out late in the 4th (multiple games where burrow was out by the middle of the 4th, and they’ll probably want to give Trent a pitch count and mims meaningful snaps if they can). In this role, mims will probably be getting enough snaps to get his feet wet before some injury to either of the OT’s (both missed time last year, at least I think?) inevitably happens. Hopefully, and likely, at that point he will be ready and I can’t wait to see this overly athletic mountain start caving in AFC North defenses

  2. Jenkins is going to make an impact in a big way, I think. He’s going to be the first defensive lineman off the bench because he’s athletic enough to moonlight as a run down edge/5 tech, then be the 3/4i in the 5 man surfaces the bengals like against heavy run teams. As long as he is getting single blocked/doubled by a true olineman and a tight end, I feel like he could be our best pure run defender right out of the gate. And that is pretty huge

  3. Burton is bringing something to the wide receiver room no one else has brought. Not even chase. The guy has arguably the best hands in the draft (no true drops to my knowledge), led the nation in yards per catch last year but isn’t a pure deep threat, and has legit FIRE in his belly when he is on the field. As the third receiver, I think this is exactly what the bengals needed. IMO, they’re gonna have chase in the slot more/trying to do more option route type plays to take advantage of his rapport with burrow to crush underneath coverages, they’re gonna have Tee be Tee (meaning, pure X who beats up corners on the outside), and then have Burton be the guy who either takes the top off these 2 deep coverages or just crush 1-on-1’s when possible.

At least, all of this is best case scenario for those guys. Hence, why I’m pretty stoked

u/TheMCM80 avatar

Jenkins. As much as it pains me to say, Michigan is one of a handful of schools (OSU/UM/Bama/Georgia/etc) that, the guys coming out of there, the guys who made the cut, usually have the mentality and drive to make an impact.

Lots of guys come to the NFL with skill and size, but are not ready for the commitment and mentality, because their college program was not at the top of that level.

Any guy coming out of one of those schools, who has the physical tools, and has the skill… they excite me.

Plus, good lord do we need someone up the middle who can stop the run.

u/Zee_WeeWee avatar

Michigan is one of a handful of schools (OSU/UM/Bama/Georgia/etc) that, the guys coming out of there, the guys who made the cut, usually have the mentality and drive to make an impact.

Not for us for some reason. Dax, Chris Evans, turner, Robinson they’ve been rough recently

u/TheMCM80 avatar

Yeah. Nothing is guaranteed, but if I have two equally graded guys, and one went to one of those top programs, and another went to Oklahoma State, or Oregon State, I’m taking the top program guy.

Not drafted but Cole Burgess could be a solid wr/kr.

How y’all have so many picks?

u/redditor_5678 avatar

The undrafted punter. Need to upgrade that position. But probably Burton of the draftees.

I was really surprised but quite a few people had him as the best punter in the class. He could be a huge get and we didn’t have to use a pick on him.

Mims! 💯

u/MutedTransportation5 avatar

Aaron Casey

The easy answer is Mims. He has the talent to be an all pro RT. They simply don't make many humans with that size/ strength/ speed combination.

I think Jenkins is a good high floor player who will be great stopping the run. I'm not sure he'll ever develop into an elite pass rusher, but I don't think he needs to in order to be successful in the NFL.

Burton is the biggest wildcard. He could have a Chris Henry-esque impact on our offense as a slot receiver who can take the top off the defense. His football profile is super solid. It's just the mental and emotional stuff that could get in his way.

I like the depth they added at TE, NT, CB and Center as well and there's a chance one or two of our last 7 picks become regular contributors or starters in their best case, but I'm not expecting that from them. If they stick as depth on the roster, that's good enough for me.

If they all play to their ceilings, there's 5 picks in here I could see being pro bowlers.

I like Erick All. Hopefully he develops nicely. I like his potential.

u/IllustriousStrain784 avatar

Personally I think Jermaine Burton is gonna have the most early, straight up immediate impact. With that said I loved the Jenkins pick and think he can see work early too. Can also see the possibility of both Cedric Johnson and Josh Newton having good pre seasons and finding snaps on that defense. Overall not the prettiest and most eye appealing draft but it was a good one. They hit really all areas of need with high intensity and i believe this can be a very impactful draft

If we are talking about”high” ….6’8” is high af!!! Think of our line! Now w Mims…nuf said

u/Disastrous-Knee-8924 avatar

Immediate impact: Kris Jenkins, Erick All and possibly Jermaine Burton Long-term impact: Matt Lee and Amarius Mims

I’m not 100% but I’m pretty happy with Mims and Jenkins. They both have relatively high risk but unless you get a top 5 pick, I think that’s just natural. I don’t think there was much strategy past the second round though and I’m not particularly thrilled about it.

u/Educational_Count317 avatar

Mims will hopefully help all others on the offense look better.

u/Educational_Count317 avatar

I hope you are right. Everything about thos guy screams to me Lenny Dykstra. And I get annoyed.

u/thesmokingchairdtcom avatar

I'm really intrigued by Erick All. Iowa has an outstanding record of producing really good NFL tight ends and him and Gesicki could really be a big time improvement for both pass protection and TE production.

I'm quite high on mims. I'm much less high on our ability to develop and coach offensive linemen.

Mims will never play a snap let alone start.

Edited

I think Matt Lee will be a pro-bowl center.

Amarius Mims will be the ultimate boom-bust pick, and I wont be surprised at all him succeeding to an all-pro level, or him failing even worse than Jackson Carman.

Mckinnley Jackson, Jermaine Burton will both be solid starters, not pro-bowl level but good solid players. Cedric Johnson will also be a similar caliber player.

Kris Jenkins is the one I think will have the best success, he is like Byron Murphy who can do well against the run or pass, and can develop a lot to be a pro-bowl caliber player.

I also like both TEs picked, and think at least one of them will be good starter for us.

Austin McNamara will be the starting punter going into next season.

Hot/gut take- Mims will be an absolute bust, but Jenkins, Lee and Burton succeed big time into pro-bowl caliber players. Jackson, Johnson, McNamara and McLachlan all succeed at the Bengals too. Erick All will show high-end flashes (Eifert level) but continues to have injury troubles, while Anthony and Newton are out of the Bengals by year 2-3.

u/sircharliepalmer avatar

Every one but Mims.

Mims only started 8 games and didn't finish a couple of those due to injury. Every scout and expert said he is a "developmental player" who isn't ready to play in the NFL yet. And so he may not play much this year, and he has a history of injures...or as Nick Saban said taking himself out of games...critical games like the NCCA playoff!

We also have two good tackles. So I doubt Mims will play much if ever. He can't play backup for guards either and Cappa has his history of injuries. (and we all know the issues with Volson).

Anyway. We all know some sites had Fautanu ranked at high as 10th in the draft and PPF said he is an athletic freak, and better athlete than Mims, and who by the way, can fill in at guard or even replace starters who are doing a poor job.

The rest along with the undrafted kicker we signed look exciting, and might actually help day one instead of being "developmental" players.
