Variety Staff Variety Uniformly strong performances, scripting and direction make for good pacing. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times Hotel is colorful and crafty. It is entertaining without being at all profound. Now if only Greta Garbo had shown up, we might have had a grand reunion in New Orleans. May 9, 2005 Full Review Bruce Williamson LIFE [It's] Hollywood formula but premium grade. Here, the play's the thing that keeps the viewer glued to his chair, and the shallowness of the characters encountered seems precisely analogous to the differences between dinner for two and drinks for 20. May 13, 2024 Full Review Raquel Stecher Out of the Past a gratifying film to watch on a rainy day. If you don't have any high expectations you'll be pleasantly surprised. It has it's flaws. It's terribly old-fashioned but that's what I liked about it. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review TV Guide Staff TV Guide The Arthur Hailey novel was vastly improved upon by the film, which was a cut above average, but no more. Rated: 3/5 Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Tony Mastroianni Cleveland Press There are good performances from actors who know their trade and work at it, lively direction and a good enough story to keep audiences occupied. jacob s Having read the book all I can say is the movie, while not the worst in and of itself, robs the book of all it's nuance and character depth. None of the people in this really seem like more than caricatures. Not to mention leaving out several major characters and altering the ending seems like such wastes. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member So 1967! The "Money vs. soul" dilemma, stealing, bribery, sex, racism, etc - under one hotel roof! Back then, middle America did not stay at big hotels in tourist spots (no Priceline!), and they could only visit this glamorous world via movies! This led to Airport - and then that led to disaster movies...great American history lesson here! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review s r Almost good. I enjoyed the New Orleans setting and the whole running of the hotel. The plot kind of fizzled in the second half. Saw it on TCM. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderfully dated today but a more than enjoyable flick back in the day. Big chain hotel company looking to buy a busy independent hotel, not unlike today's industry norm. The movie was the reason I first got interested in the hotel business. I do, however, miss the hats and the more formal look of yesterday's travelers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member way better than i expected it would be - some cool glitzy jazz too Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member gr8 cast brings this popular book by arthur halley to the big screen it even spun-off a TV series.
