I mean it's a tower defense game, but it's also a factory manager/action-RTS sort of thing. You collect resources, build resource extractors and various processors and refineries, you research new tech, construct different turrets and autonomous units, supply things with ammo and electricity. And all that while periodically being attacked by waves of enemies that come from off the map (which you just have to survive), or from an enemy base (that you have to destroy).
No I wouldn't say there's few it's still like the third most played game on Steam and that's without the Chinese numbers I think. Its population has just been in Decline as the MOBA scene run its course in terms of mainstream popularity in the gaming world. The only people really left are those who got really invested and are still playing.
I I don't know about the other mobas or their Developers but valve doesn't seem to be very interested in doing anything to attract new players whatsoever. On the other hand they seem to be fairly interested in catering to their current veteran player base which is by no means a bad thing but it does sort of feel like they've isolated the game a little bit to people who are already very familiar with it.
What it means is that some of the game is stagnated a bit especially for the very high level players you will never see other new high-level players and end up playing with the same people over and over again.
It also means the low end is kind of a mix of very low too low to mid-level skill levels. Especially the few people that are new are now stuck with playing with people that have been playing for a while but are generally not that good at the game thus getting stuck with new players but they're still more knowledgeable than a new player giving them an advantage. New players don't really have many new players to actually play with.

between league, dota and the others theres basically "no" new palyers coming into those games
I tried a few months back, but from what I saw they mostly only had the top game from wc3 and the top game from sc2
Like if it wasn't element TD or that trooper vs defense, it just wasn't there.
In particular I remember not seeing any wintermauls present. I'm also wondering if any of the later wc3 stuff ever showed up, like Green TD Trolls, warcraftmaul (i assume that would be under a different name) or random defense
edit: oh and wintermaul zero, that became super popular at some point.
Other comments already covered the best ones, but Metal Gear Survive actually has really fun co-op tower defense. The rest of the game is awful garbage, but if you're looking for something completely unique, you can give it a try.
Aegis Defenders is fun and quite underrated. As an added bonus, only 1 person needs to buy it, the other one will log in through Steam remote play, or locally.

Mindustry is... kind of a tower defense game.

And it has multiplayer.
Related to mindustry there is also Factorio, especially with biter difficulty turned up, and fortress craft evolved.
Only good modern answer is Orcs Must Die.
Element TD2 great game
Toy Soldiers/Toy Soldiers: Cold War might fit the bill for you, played countless hours with a friend
Sanctum - https://store.steampowered.com/app/91600/Sanctum/
It's like FPS with tower defense.
There's a 2v2 or 4v4 TD game I believe called Legion TD 2 that's based on a mod for Warcraft 3!
Deathtrap is pretty cool. It's pretty much an ARPG mixed with a tower defence game.
dota 2 has tower defense games in it's arcade. free to play + matchmaking
Warcraft 3
this. has great TD maps
Yep, or there are loads in Starcraft 2 arcade.
Dota

Probably not what you're looking for but technically....
We need new players ;(
Out of curiosity, looking for the stats on Steam the game still has a lot of players, do you mean that there are very few low level players?

There's no such thing. It'd be extremely boring playing as a tower.
There are a number. You don’t “play as a tower”
Rush Royale is fun but its all random so it can be annoying af lol it's 1v1 and has a ladder
pixeljunk monsters 2
dungeon defenders series
Defense Grid 2 has multiplayer.
Other comments already covered the best ones, but Metal Gear Survive actually has really fun co-op tower defense. The rest of the game is awful garbage, but if you're looking for something completely unique, you can give it a try.
Technically Rock of Ages 2 is a unique 1P or PvP castle defence & attack game with TD elements.
Dota 2 and SC2 have free custom modes with multiple multiplayer coop and pvp type tower defense

Sc1 is where its at.
