Hallmark’s Aurora Teagarden franchise is getting an extreme makeover.
Cable network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries announced Thursday that it has greenlit a new Aurora Teagarden movie — the first without original leading lady Candace Cameron Bure, who left Hallmark for a deal at fledgling competitor GAC Family in April 2022.
Skyler Samuels (Scream Queens, The Gifted) will take over the title role in the franchise’s 19th installment — a prequel called Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Something New (premiere date TBA). Rounding out the cast are Evan Roderick (Arrow, Spinning Out) as a younger version of Peter Benson’s Arthur, and Marilu Henner, who is reprising her role as Aurora’s mom Aida.
“Our viewers have been waiting for more adventures with Aurora and her friends,” Emily Merlin, Development Manager of Programming at Hallmark Media, said in a statement. “What better way to do that than to take them back to when the young, amateur sleuth was just coming into her own? The Aurora Teagarden franchise is a fan favorite and we’re excited to share this new chapter with viewers.”
Per Hallmark, Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Something New is set in Aurora’s “post-college days when she finds herself back home in Lawrenceton. While her mother, Aida, struggles to keep her newfound real estate business, Aurora supports herself by working as a teacher’s assistant in a crime fiction class, and waitresses at the local diner at night, where she shares her love of researching true crime with her friend Sally and police officer Arthur.
“When Sally’s fiancé doesn’t show up at their wedding rehearsal, Maid of Honor Aurora gets Arthur to help her search for him,” the synopsis continues. “When they discover a body, everyone assumes it is Sally’s tardy groom, but when it turns out to be someone else, Sally’s fiancé becomes the main suspect.”
Bure’s deal with GAC Media effectively ended her decade-long relationship with Hallmark — and her reign as Aurora. The recently rebranded GAC Family is run by Bill Abbott, former CEO of Hallmark Channel‘s parent company Hallmark Media (fka Crown Media Family Networks). Abbott left his longtime perch in January 2020 following Hallmark’s decision to stop airing a commercial featuring a same-sex wedding — a decision the network quickly reversed amid a sea of controversy.
Bure recently made waves for a November interview with The Wall Street Journal, during which she vowed that GAC Family programming would keep “traditional marriage at its core.”

I’m so glad she’s gone! Now I will watch Aurora.
Agreed!
me too. it was a good move on hallmark’s part
Yes! I wholeheartedly agree.
I am glad she is gone as welll
It be fun to see a young Aurora. I always enjoyed those mysteries so I am looking forwarto this.
At the risk of confusion over names, I’d have preferred to see Aimee Teegarden as CCB’s replacement.
Me too !
Oh, she would have been an excellent choice!
The new Aurora is bad move. And I for one won’t be watching this program. This girl looks totally different than the original Aurora. But I many people who commented love second best.
I agree, bad move. When you think of Ro Teagarden, you automatically think Candice. No one is ever going to see eye to eye on everything. The series should have stopped once she left. Jumping the shark moment right here. Sometimes you just have to let things go.
I started watching the new episode this evening and agree. Just not the same. With Aurora and Sally gone I just couldn’t get into it.
I agree, they could have kept all the other cast members! This is totally a different show which is not enjoyable.
Good call. Aimee Teegarden would have been a great choice as the adult Aurora. Maybe Hallmark will keep that in mind.
I’m glad she’s gone. I never watched her movies anyway. I wish they had done the same with the Garage Sale Mysteries, just recast the lead and kept the rest of the cast. I really liked watching those.
You’re glad she’s gone but never watched her movies? How does that make sense?
If you’re not a fan you don’t watch their stuff. Now that there’s a new actress in place the OP will watch this series. What doesn’t make sense?
If you never watched her stuff, you can’t have an informed position on her work. Why then would you be glad they’re gone?
It makes no sense.
Not so. Their opinion could be based on the interview and comments she made to the WSJ that many found were bigoted.
.
And, they may have not felt comfortable supporting a channel that gave her work, now that she’s gone, they may and that could be why, they are glad she’s gone.
.
It’s not that difficult to see that the comment may not be (and was not justified by) her acting on this particular channel.
.
This!
Exactly!
Maybe they watched her in things she did before her Hallmark movies and they really didn’t like her acting. Or her looks. Or her voice. Or they loved the books and thought she didn’t fit their idea of Aurora. Or anything, really.
You
Your comment makes zero sense if you never watched her movies. Sounds more like you’re glad she’s gone because she didn’t follow the majority but stuck to her convictions and chose another network. So sad that you all are narrow minded boots and bullies.
You forget their are very liberal in their views as long as you agree with theirs
Agree, the comment doesn’t
Make sense.?
I was thinking they should relaunch it as a prequel to make the transition easier. I was actually thinking a college set series, but this close enough.
Just when I thought Hallmark literally couldn’t get any worse then it already has.
Couldn’t agree more.
Wait… when was it on? I must have missed. What about it was bad?
It hasn’t aired and I think it hasn’t even been filmed.
Clearly you work for GAC and its sad that you troll this site.
What’s sad is that anyone with a dissenting opinion, in your mind, works for the competitor and is trolling.
Why can’t people disagree with you? What makes your opinion your own (and not the opinion of Hallmark’s that you’re regurgitating) but this person’s opinion can’t be their own?
There are better ways to state your opinion –:to say the whole network is getting worse makes it sound like a troll
Not really! The quality of their light-hearted comedy with very little drama are cookie cutter-made at best. No matter how enjoyable a few are the rest will follow suit like the successful ones because why would Hallmark mess with a winning formula. Clearly you’ve haven’t watch a lot of Hallmark. Besides some with Allison Sweeney in them they are okay or bland. I like the actress that plays the leads in Mystery 101. Will they replace her? The fans hated how Hallmark treated what became the final season of Good Witch. They shipped a same-sex that just wasn’t the right fit. They did it because of today’s atmosphere whether than had the same-sex story slowly evolve over seasons. It lead to low ratings and ultimately its untimely cancel. That is on Hallmark’s not the viewers. They have spoken their dislike in sudden addition direction. Now do you get some people’s point and that it doesn’t come off as trolling?
AGREED HOW AWFUL THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER AURORA . NEVER MISSED A MOVIE I WILL NOT WATCH.
Well, they didn’t have much choice when the actress decided to leave Hallmark and go elsewhere. So…I’d rather have movies with a new actress than no more movies at all. How exactly is it awful? So, Hallmark is supposed to just never make use of their rights to the character because Candace Cameron Bure left the network? That would be a stupid business decision. I think it’s fine if you don’t watch. But, you act like they just kicked Candace out of the movies. They didn’t. She decided to leave.
Would have been better to go with the actress that portrayed young Aurora in the movie with young Sally
That is Cameron’s daughter. Young Sally was also played by the actress’ daughter in real life.
‘When Candace Cameron Bure left Hallmark, she basically left all of the Aurora Cast hung out to dry. They all lost their 3-4 movies a year jobs.
That includes Marilu Henner who is in this new one. That pretty much says it all that she has signed up for this new movie.
Also, why all sour about this? Candace has been a long-time executive producer of this franchise. That means she will be paid by Hallmark for this reboot.
I agree casting is terrible.
Well, after shedding a universe class horror show like Bure, it’s not possible they didn’t get better.
“Horror show.”
Give me a break. She was great for what she was and for what this channel’s standards are all about.
Ridiculous that people like you get all worked up simply because someone differs from you. Be better.
Nah. She’s a bigot. She’s also completely overrated as an actress. There are better actresses who are actually good people, and those are the ones who deserve jobs.
A bigot? Please….explain! Can’t wait to hear this! And in your own words, please. Not the ones you’ve heard repeated over and over again by butthurt people.
So then go GAK and dont come back girl lol
BYEEEEEEE
Agree
Great news. I love cozy mystery series but didn’t want to watch CCB. Looking forward to this.
Skyler Samuels is wonderful,love her!!
It goes to show you : NOBODY IS IRREPLACEBLE
In the immortal words of Beyonce ‘to the left, to the left’.
Lol. Funny.
yes! and a much better (and likeable) actress too. I will finally watch these movies
The level of hatred that people have for Candace usually says more about them than it does her. If it bothers you that much to see someone with a different belief system than your own, there is something wrong with you.
Will I watch? Probably not. I’d rather see that series just end, since most of the cast will be replaced anyway, and those who watched this particular series probably want Candace and the whole cast back (which won’t happen). Other mystery series are still waiting to come back. This just seems like a jab in the eye of someone they don’t like, rather than a necessary story to tell.
It is an insult to everyone. She was their most popular and highest rated actress, and Hallmark clearly hasn’t gotten over losing her and so they think acting out like this is a good idea.
Not to mention, I enjoyed quite a few of their mystery series besides this one, until all of them were axed without an ending or were on cliffhangers.
it was not a loss it was her choice. why should we miss a series we love because she decided to be intolerant, not a very Christian attribute. the series will go on and that is a blessing. the guy who played her first bf was very popular but he left to do Murdoch Mysteries and they replaced him so why not her? actually his character was her husband in the books
So many things wrong…
Murdoch Mysteries (with Yannick) was on for years before he guest appeared on a few Teagarden movies. CCB went to GAC with a romance movie deal, and could have continued the Mystery Movies but Hallmark chose not to, and this was well before the WSJ interview.
so no things wrong. yannick was on a lot of things murdock, FBeye, etc. he is a popular actor. my point was they worked around his departure and can work around her choice. i do not see so many things wrong
I don’t think it’s that she has a “different belief system.” I think it’s that her belief system appears to include homophobia. Even if she weren’t a homophobe, she still comes off as obnoxious and delusional, and her acting is terrible.
What do we call it when people spread hatred toward another person’s religious beliefs? And how is that better than your vague, non-specific claims of homophobia?
LOL “vague, non-specific claims of homophobia” if you don’t know that she is a bigot, then you are living under a rock. And if you defend her, then you are clearly also a bigot.
I agree!! I do watch GAC but just not anything she is in. I will support actors with talent but unfornutely there were good actors in her Christmas movie I didn’t get to see their outstanding performance because she was in it. She should join her brother in his endeavors. Everyone has their right to opinions as I have a right not to support her. She’s not a bigot she’s just very closed minded who can’t see beyond her own little bubble and remember God made us all who we are with no exceptions as he doesn’t make mistakes.
Your comment suggests that you haven’t read the Bible or studied Christianity. At no point is it suggested that we are all perfect just the way we are. If that were the case, why would Jesus have been needed at all?
Christians believe in free will. We are responsible for our actions.
Still more vague claims. Because you can’t give an example of her hating anyone, just examples of people not liking her beliefs. Saying “well, everybody knows, so it must be true” is not a valid argument.
Her “beliefs” actively hurt others. A belief with shades of hate. You give hate, you get hate.
It is possible to believe that something is a sin in your religion without hating those who do that thing. For all the talk that this generation does of “adulting”, you’d think that they’d understand this very basic concept. I’ve never seen Candace spread hatred toward anyone, but a lot of people spread it toward her. Then they feel justified in their bigotry and blame her for it.
I’m Gen X. So her bigotry is justified because of her interpretation of her religion, but we are bigots for not buying into her religious bigotry?
As a Christian, there are many hetero behaviors that she would also believe to be sinful in nature. Why does she not get the same level of hatred for those beliefs?
The thing here is that non-Christians (or people who claim to be Christians but aren’t really well read on the subject… which can even include preacher types) don’t understand the relationship of man and sin according to Christianity, and therefore find it offensive whenever a Christian calls something a sin.
Lesson 1: in Christianity, we are all sinners. We are all undeserving, and are in need of salvation through Christ.
Therefore “sin” and “sinner” are not bad words or insults, or a means of looking down on someone. They encompass all of us.
Lesson 2: one can acknowledge a sin, while at the same time loving the sinner. A person is not their sin, and nobody is without sin (except Jesus), so it makes no sense to hate someone for being a sinner.
Conclusion: I’m going to need to see where Candace actually said that she hates gay people, and not just a reference to sin. As I said, many hetero behaviors would fall into that category as well. Also, her not believing in something you support is no different than you not believing in something she supports. Unless someone is calling for violence or persecution, why care? People put a lot of energy into hating this woman.
Fully agree with Kyle. But people today have no understanding of anything with more than one variable. Sin but not the sinner is too complicated for the simple minds of today where social media has to tell them who is OK and who isn’t each week (and next week, people on either list shift to the other for no real reason. Funny how Candace EARNED the highest ratings, and now the hatred against her is actually sickening. Funny how the ones screaming for Tolerance clearly display their own inability to have ANY TOLERANCE AT ALL.
Luckily for us Kyle, we dont need your approval to know what’s in front of our eyes. Candy Bure is a bigot through and through and I love it that she’s banished to GAK and never to be seen again. Go join her. We’re not stopping you.
Extracheesey, does it not bother you that you feel so much hatred toward someone for no apparent reason? I get not agreeing with her, or even avoiding her movies. What I don’t get is the effort that you put into this hatred, while never be able to simply explain why. That sort of hatred doesn’t harm her, it harms you.
Bure actively harmed others in full knowledge of the fact her gibberish was doing just that. She didn’t even have following any actual religion as an (unacceptable) excuse. She’s just a universe-class horror show.
How did she “harm others?”
Are you so fragile you can’t hear that people don’t like you?
Grow up.
Give me an example of her “harming” others that doesn’t include bigotry toward her religious beliefs. Because I see a lot of people here who fully support hatred and intolerance when it is directed toward people they don’t like, and they’re a lot worse than anything I’ve seen Candace say. I’ve never seen Candace express hate toward anyone. Growing up in Hollywood, I am willing to bet that she knows and even loves plenty of gay people. Maybe people need to stop viewing her beliefs through the lens of their own narrow worldview and let her speak for herself. Just because you can’t love someone who doesn’t think exactly like you, it doesn’t mean that others are so limited.
Thank you for standing up in the midst of Marxist. You get a standing ovation
Yes, it says just how utterly horrible and amoral that trash (Bure) was.
By your logic, hatred toward any group would just prove how horrible that group is. The reaction to Candace is really irrational. It would probably make for a fascinating study.
That’s a lot of words to tell us you’re also a bigot, just like Candace.
I’m a bigot because I don’t just blindly agree with what you believe, and nobody has been able to vote an example of her hatred in order to change my mind? Me thinks someone hasn’t looked up the definition of the word “bigot”.
Am I the only one who thinks they missed a priceless opportunity to replace Bure with Hilarie Burton?
IMO HB is too cosmopolitan to be believable as Aurora, and too old for a prequel.
No, they didn’t. Good riddance.
Anything that doesn’t star Candace is bound to be great. I will actually watch the new show.
What about Lexa Doig ?
Hopefully Lexa Doig new mystery movies that aired this year will turn into a series (along with Aurora new ex husband) lol that starred on it with her.
Bonnie, if you’re talking about “Family History Mysteries: Buried Past” on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries that co-stars Niall Matter. The lead actress in that movie is Janel Parrish (from Pretty Little Liars), not Lexa Doig.
I’m so glad HMM is doing this. I love their mysteries and the premise for this one looks like a winner. Wonderful to see Aida returning! Who needs Bure’.. Any date set for this?
Friday nite, 6/9. EST 5:00 P.M.
Not sure how convincing Marilu Henner will be playing mother of mid-20’s version of Aurora but understand why they want one actress from original movies to continue in their role.
As a fan of the books, i tried one of the movies, before learning Bure was a homo bigot. I didnt care for her portrayal. Found it bland and colorless. This almost has to be an improvement
I’m sad that Candance won’t be playing Aurora anymore but glad the movies will continue. I just wish they would have just continued it with a new actress so that all the regular actors could return rather than doing a prequel series with an all new cast with the exception of the mother who probably shouldn’t be playing herself as a young person. I mean, if it takes place during the College days or post-college, this will be at least 20 years prior to the events of the first movie.
Haha! I’ve never watched these movies because I can’t stand her, but now I will. This actress has to be a lot better. The acting couldn’t get much worse.
I am so glad Bure is not part of Hallmark any longer…I hope they change Marilu Henner from a helicopter mom to a more understanding mom..
I am also glad they are showing Garage Sale Mysteries…I really enjoy the series with Lori Loughlin and cast…I wish she could make new Garage Sale Mysteries at Hallmark…
I am so sad that Candace Cameron Bure’ is not playing Aurora Teagarden anymore. I loved her. I think she is a great actress. I will, however, be watching the new ones though.
Hooray for something New! I’m a huge fan and can’t wait!
The Aurora Teagarden series was so different from the books that it doesn’t bother me a bit that they’re trying it again with a different timeline and cast. I’m not so sure about Marilu Henner playing a younger mom, though. I hope they bring back some other of the mystery series or do new ones.
Good. I’ll watch the movies now. I don’t watch bigots like Bure.
I did not watch the Aurora Teagarden series, but I am happy for the fans that it does not have to end with Bure’s exit.
