Mantua - known to the Italians as Mantova - is a city that gains in reputation with each year that passes. In 2007, it, along with nearby Sabbioneta, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2016, it was declared the Italian Capital of Culture, which, as you can imagine, is no small boast. This year, it was also declared the Italian Capital of Gastronomy - and, in a country where food is of such huge importance, that’s a hotly contested title, too.
And then there is the setting, which makes Mantua truly magnificent. It is surrounded by three artificial lakes, placed there in the 12th century as a defense against invasion. Add to that a range of Renaissance-era buildings, of which the Palazzo Te is the most notable, and a collection of similarly stunning architecture, and you’ve got a city which will live long in any tourist’s memory. So, if you’re considering it for a holiday, there’s just one more question: Where do you stay? Read on to learn about the nine best places to stay in Mantua, Italy!
