Public holidays in Cyprus are paid days-off provided to all part-time and full-time workers, in addition to the paid annual leave they are entitled by law to take each year.
According to Cyprian labour legislation, every full-time employee is entitled to a day-off on each of the national public holidays. When an employee needs to work on a public holiday, they are entitled to be paid double the normal rate of pay for every hour worked. Part-time employees are entitled to equivalent holidays to full-time workers.
Generally retail stores are required to be closed on most public holidays of the year. However some stores and places of employment are allowed to remain open on a small number of the holidays.
Cyprian Labour law also allows for special arrangements for popular tourist areas so that retail and tourist service businesses in these areas are not required to be closed on public holidays. However, in cases that businesses are allowed to open, they are still required to pay double rates of pay to employees.
