I don't get why this record is so universally panned
I only recently discovered Faster Pussycat. I remember them when they were popular but I couldn't be bothered from by Bon Jovi, Poison, Whitesnake and Guns'n'Roses at the time. I saw FP on MTV and figured they were an also ran.

In my adulthood, I expanded my palette, frankly, quite exponentially. Most was indie type stuff but for context, I now have Harry Partch in my collection.

Anyway, recently, I started going back and investigating bands from when i was a kid that I hand dismissed. I remembered Faster Pussycat. I listened to the first couple albums of course and now love them. However, Whipped felt like this classic to me, lost in the grunge revolution. I was so ironic to me because as Seattle wallowed in punk devil-may-care apathy and Cobain's loud-soft-loud dymamics, here is this band who had added color to New York Dolls sleeze.

When you (ok, i read-you know better than to bother) read critic tomes of why glam metal is utter horseshit, often you get the same arguments. The lyrics are inane. How profound is 'beat on the brat with a baseball bat'? Or you get that it is all teased hair and mtv marketing. I repeat the aforementioned New York Dolls or even David Bowie, both of which are heralded by the rock press. (The New York Dolls couldnt even play their instruments but they get a pass because of some suggested punk-wise existential truth of the time. Ok. I'll by that. I like the New York Dolls. But why is 80s glam metal so reviled? I suspect its that people made money at it. Anyway, have I digressed.

The hooks on Whipped just keep coming. Nonstop to Nowhere is positively anthemic, both for the band and the time. I'm pretty sure this band never wanted to represent anything more than that contained in the lyrics of this song. While most hair metal enjoyed sleeze, FP wallowed in it. Sleeze was their mantra. Sleeze defined this band like no other. The only reason FP's compilation isn't called Decade of Decadence is there career didn't last a decade, at least in relevance.

Big Dictionary would be presented by any other band with a wink and smile. However, with Faster Pussycat you are pretty sure that to them nothing else matters.

There are a couple songs here that exist as non-songs, set pieces to the FP asthetic. Some before me have criticized Loose Booty and Cat Bash as non-songs. It's like rejecting a chair because it isn't a door. You realize, I hope, FP did not innovate the interlude.

Where FP does write songs on Whipped they are as interesting as most that had existed in the era that had just passed them by. The Body Thief's staccoto chorus is as infectious as any and Taime Down's cat call at the beginning of Jack The Bastard might be the most unapologetic moment in rock music since. Also, notice the bass and how it's serpentine line articulates 'rock n roll' is a euphemism for sex. I don't know if Madame Ruby's Love Boutique is a real place but if it is, I wanna go there.

I'm not gonna keep going now but I was just reading the comments and I agreed with almost none of them. Even the good reviews didn't hint at the value here. This is a thoroughly enjoyable album to me. I count it among the best of late period hair metal. Even G'n'R didn't commit to sleaze at this level. There are moments in the FP catalog that are even creepy. On Whipped though, they got their songs together. It's certainly at very minimum a poor man's Dr. Feelgood.

Listen to it again maybe, with new wisdom, not that the band would want any part of that.

A little to experimental in my opinion (but no modern or alternative shit on the record). It has some funk, some Jazz, but also still a lot of sleazy. TAIME on vocalst still sounds like in the 80s, no industrial sounding stuff like he did with his voice in the 2000s sad enough.
Its not my fave album by them but it still it has one of my all time fave FP song on it: NONSTOP TO NOWHERE. MR.LOVEDOG is also very strong and you have some more on this vinyl -yes, i bought it back then on vinyl, today i see it goes for some money. I was lucky to be still into vinyl back in 1992.
Good to own if you are into SLEAZY and older FASTER PUSSYCAT. You will find stuff you enjoy, for shore.

This album is OK. A little disappointing coming from Faster Pussycat though. Probably their worst album but I haven't heard The Power And The Glory Hole yet.

They had a huge party going on their first album. Their second album wasn't quite as wild but still a party. This one has it's party moments but some duds as well.

My favorites are "Nonstop To Nowhere", "Big Dictionary" and "Friends". Worst songs on here are without a doubt "Cat Bash" and "Loose Booty". "Cat Bash" isn't even a song it's just a waste of space. "Loose Booty" is a song but still a waste of space.

All-in-all a good album (except for "Cat Bash" and "Loose Booty") just not as good as their first two, especially the self-titled debut album.

The only reason I own this is for the Andy Wood tribute "Mr. Love Dog". Other than that, I can't stand Faster Pussycat and I hate this album.

bit more grunge influenced than their other albums but still a good cd

It's no wonder why these guys didn't survive the grunge invasion of the 90s. Though they had their fair share of airplay in the late 80s, Faster Pussycat was not known as one of the frontrunners of their genre. Their 3rd album, Whipped!, starts off promisingly with the melodic "Nonstop to Nowhere" and the Jeffrey Dahmer-inspired funk fest "Body Thief", but unfortunately falls into forgettable mediocrity soon after.

Fave track: "Nonstop to Nowhere", "The Body Thief".
