Postamble: Brazil are in tears while Australia whoop and cheer. And maybe dance too? Yep, there’s some dancing in there. And why not? They’ve shocked the Brazilians, who had yet to concede before today. It was a workmanlike win from the Matildas, who mainly restricted their opponents to long shots. But they’ll take workmanlike - they’re in the last eight of the World Cup!

Full-time: Australia 1-0 Brazil

Kerr jogs into the corner but Brazil win it back and they charge forward. A huge tackle from Kennedy keeps the Brazlians out though, and that’s it! Australia have beaten the Brazilians!

90 min: The free-kick is pumped long into the box and Cristiane meets it with her head. But it’s straight at Williams, who has been a reassurring presence for the Australians all afternoon. Two minutes of added time.

87 min: This is a shock, but not a huge one according to the Fifa rankings - Brazil are ranked 7th and Australia 10th. A second ball has appeared on the field. No one knows why and there’s a drop ball. Brazil not happy as they had good field position.

85 min: Those subs were attacking ones, by the way. Looking back at the goal, Luciana probably should have caught De Vanna’s initial shot. I’m told Simon is the first Indigenous Australian to score at a Women’s World Cup.

83 min: Marta is booked after lashing out in frustration. Was the goal deserved? Australia haven’t been brilliant but Brazil have hadly sparkled either and the Matildas’ pace has worred their opponents all day. Beatriz is on for Thaisa, and Tamires makes way for Fernandes.

GOAL!!! Australia 1-0 Brazil (Simon 80)

A rapid break by Australia - where they have been best all day - finds De Vanna one on one with the keeper. She tries to sidefoot it into the far corner but it’s saved and Simon is there to snaffle up the loose ball.

79 min: Cristiane, to no one’s surprise, shoots. It’s well struck but straight at Williams, who saves.

77 min: Australia have a free-kick in the centre of the pitch, aroud 25 yards out. It’s flicked up and the ball dinked forward in the general direction of an Aussie head. But the offside flaga is raised. The final ball from Australia today has been pretty bad.

75 min: At 5ft 0in, they’re not bringing Gorry on for her aerial ability. But she’s got a good shot and pings the ball in after it’s cleared from a corner. It drifts wide, and we’re heading for extra-time.

69 min: De Vanna looks up on the left with plenty of time to cross but her pass is intercepted by the Brazilian defence. “Re: the damp crowd,” writes Gabriel Piller. “Seems like Canada (where I live) has picked up the spirit of English football - as interpreted by Ben Elton.”

66 min: The game is incredibly open at the moment after a cagy start to the second half. The crowd has livened up a lot more as a result too.

64 min: Excitement! First, Brazil hit the post off a header. Then the Matildas counter-attack and Van Egmond’s shot whistles wide. Heyman is subbed off for Simon.

62 min: Cristiane has never met a ball she doesn’t want to smack the hell out of. This time the victim is deflected off an Aussie defender, and Williams saves. Brazil are definitely on top now – Marta’s low shot from an angle is palmed away at the near post. This is the point when Australia faded against the US in their opener.

59 min: Foord causes all kinds of problems with a quick break into the Brazilian area but she loses possession as she bears down on goal. A good, positive run though.

58 min: De Vanna, whose ankle is fine by the way, launches a counter-attack down the right wing but it ends with a trip into a crunching Brazilians challenge. The ankle is still fine though.

56 min: The Matildas win another corner after a Kerr charge. Let’s see if they can put something together ...no. Kerr gets a shot in but it’s hooked high and wide. The crowd look cold and wet. And maybe a little sad.

53 min: Not much shape to the second half so far, the wind has got up which is affecting things when the ball gets above head height.

49 min: Heyman and Rafaelle’s battle continues. Rafaelle wins (again) but Australia do win a corner. So maybe they win. But Australia mess up the corner so maybe they win. Let’s call it a draw.

46 min: And we’re back. How excited are Australia and Brazil about this game? They were out two minutes early for the second-half. At whch point they had to stand about awkwardly, while the ref waited for the start of the half. Still, good to see people who take their jobs seriously. A Brazil shot zings across the face of goal to start the half.

45 min: Rafaelle shows some lovely defending, shrugging off Heyman before turning and bringing the ball up the field.Scary moment for Australia as De Vana goes down holding her ankle and then Marta pulls the strings on the edge of the area. But the sides go into half-time even. We’ll see if De Vanna makes it out for the second 45 minutes.

44 min: “This game was the one I was most excited in to see it the round of 16 but so far it’s like watching Stoke v Bolton on a wet and windy Tuesday,” says Luke Crane. They’ve definitely got the wet and windy element right, if not the Tuesday part.

43 min: Yet another corner for the Matildas after some lightning counter-attacks/rubbish Brazilian defending. There have been plenty of lapses from Brazil but Australia have yet to exploit any of them.

39 min: Cristiane beats three or four players before running into trouble. At the other end Fabiana and De Vanna compete for a through ball, and it’s the Brazilian who outmuscles and outpaces her opponent.

37 min: Heyman and Tamires clash, and Tamires comes off much worse. But she’s back on her feet soon enough and wandering round, if a little shakily.

35 min: Marta dances on the edge of the area but her square ball is straight to Australian feet. And those feet boot the ball as far as they can.

32 min: A positive for Australia: according to Fox Sports the Matildas were 2-0 down at this stage in their last two World Cup knockout games. Another positive: they have a corner. A negative: Kennedy heads the cross straight into a Brazilian defender.

29 min: Formiga at the other end! She shoots from around 25 yards out, and it curls in wickledly. Williams has to stretch to palm the ball over. A good save and an even better shot.

27 min: A long ball comes into the Brazilian box and Formiga rises well to head away from Kerr. The resulting Aussie corner comes to nothing. Meanwhile, the waterproofs are coming out in the crowd as the rain begins to fall. It’s just like Melbourne in winter.

25 min: Heyman gets in behind the Brazlian defence, but she’s pushed wide and there are no team-mates to support her. She squares the ball back but it’s only Brazilians back to mop things up. “Vadao and Alen Stejcic currently having a little debate about the nature of fair play from their respective technical boxes, after Cristiane looked to have been kicked off ball on edge of box,” says Graham Parker in Moncton. “They’re agreeing to disagree. Or just disagreeing.”

22 min: Ooof. Scary moment for Australia as a ball comes across the box and is missed by three Matilda defenders. It’s missed by a fair few Brazilians too, and the return ball goes out for an Aussie throw.

20 min: Kerr tries to wriggle away from the Brazil defence but loses it, and the ball is distributed to Cristiane. She thinks she was fouled, the ref reckons it was a fair challenge and play is waved on. It’s safe to say Cristiana doesnt take the decision well and roars at the ref.

16 min: For a team that has yet to concede a goal, Brazil look pretty shaky at the back. Australia’s pace has bothered the Brazilians, but there have been plenty of lapses by their defenders too.

14 min: It’s end-to-end stuff at the moment. Marta has her first significant action, putting in a dangerous ball that Kennedy hacks out for a corner. Williams punches clear, and as Australia break Fabiana hacks down Foord and is booked.

11 min: Australia have their first corner of the game. Anyone’s first corner of the game, come to think of it. Luciana fumbles under pressure and the ball goes behind for another corner. This time it sails over the Brazilian defence and Kerr volleys into the side netting. She probably had enough time to bring that down and measure her shot more precisely.

8 min: Brazil work the ball down nicely down the right before it’s squared to Cristiana. She spins on the edge of the area but her shot is straight at Williams, who gathers safely.

6 min: Australia venture into the Brazilian half. But the Brazilians are wise to De Vanna’s danger and quickly close her down.

4 min: Brazil have had the better of the opening stages, with Australia struggling to get out of their own half. Meanwhile, Graham Parker’s in Moncton:

“It’s a real contrast in atmospheres from opening two games Brazil played at the Olympic Stadium. There, even a small crowd would make a noise that ricocheted off the concrete within the giant domed stadium.
“Here, you can hear what both teams are shouting as their team huddles break, and the polite local crowd in this open ended stadium is virtually silent right now — loudest voices are the players and the TV announcers in my ear from the gantry behind me.

1 min: And we’re off. Brazil are in their famous yellow and Australia are in dark blue. Apparently, there’s a storm moving in on Moncton, which is already under grey skies.

Graham Parker is at the game today and has this to say:

Funny thing about this Brazil team — their defense can be got at, as Spain showed in the opening stretches in Montreal. And the attack has mostly been ruthless in punishing opposition error rather than finishing off chances they make themselves. But they weren’t really pushed in their group.
They rested Marta and Formiga for the last match while Fabiana and Thaisa were injured, so with all of them back this should be a relatively fresh team ready to face an Australia side who came through a very tough group without any such leeway. That may be the crux of this game: have Australia played their way into the tournament already and can their fast attack get behind the Brazil defense (Spain evidence suggest yes), or have Brazil played within themselves to the point where they’re now ready to ease into the knockout rounds? It’s a chilly, damp day in Moncton by the way. Am in a crowded back row of press tribune, where the roof on the stand (sort of) covers the various laptops crammed together below.

Australia have acquited themselves pretty well so far. The Matildas were unlucky not to be 2-0 up in their opener against USA, who had Hope Solo to thank for a couple of brilliant saves. They flagged in the second-half, as the US took control. But it showed they can compete against the best in the world, in short bursts at least.

So, Brazil are the favourites for this one, having won all three of their games so far as well as not bothering to make things interesting by conceding any goals. But while their defence has been solid they have yet to impress up front, scoring only four goals in their group games. And Marta, the source of so much that is good about this Brazilian team has only had one shot on target all tournament. Then again, she did score with that. So ... Marta has scored with every shot she’s had on goal this tournament! Watch out, Australia!
