2000 Honda Civic Overview

Expert Review

Is the 2000 Honda Civic Right for You?

What Is It and Who Is It For?

The 2000 Honda Civic is a subcompact car with seating for five people. It’s meant for drivers who want an efficient, reliable, and easy-to-drive car. While it’s generally entertaining to drive, most buyers choose it primarily for day-to-day transportation.

What Makes It Unique?

The Civic offers sophisticated engineering and good driving dynamics in a comfortable, high-quality package. A wide array of models – ranging from dedicated economy cars in three different body styles up to a specialized performance coupe – allows buyers to pick exactly the right one for their needs.

Civic vs. Other Hondas

The Civic is Honda’s mainstream small car, slightly larger than the 2-seat Hybrid Insight, but smaller than the midsize Accord.

Honda Civic vs. Competition

The Civic is a mainstay in a very popular class. More than a dozen other small cars compete directly with it, though few of them offer as many body styles or engine/trim configurations. Previous Civics have also earned a reputation for high quality and value.

  • Ford Focus: New in 2000, the Focus is a stylish, well-engineered performer available in four different body styles and many different trim levels. Space and driving dynamics are near the top of the class.
  • Mazda Protege: Offering a sports sedan feel and very good performance for the class with little sacrifice in fuel economy, the Protege also treats passengers well with a comfortable, spacious interior.
  • Toyota Corolla: Competent in every way, comfortable, and of very high quality, the Corolla is a rock-solid transportation choice but is low on driver involvement or style.
  • Nissan Sentra: Spacious, comfortable, and using nicer interior materials than other small cars, the Sentra feels more expensive than it is and offers a lot of standard equipment.

Changes for 2000

  • No major changes for 2000.

2000 Honda Civic vs. Older Civics

The 2000 Honda Civic is part of a generation launched for 1996. Earlier Civics are similar and may save you money. The regular Civics are popular sellers, so there are many to choose from, but the performance-focused Si was not available before 1999 and is harder to find.

Which 2000 Honda Civic Trim Is the Best Value?

The original starting prices, including the MSRP and destination charge:

  • CX hatchback: $11,065
  • DX hatchback: $12,515
  • DX coupe: $13,095
  • DX sedan: $13,300
  • Value Package Sedan: $15,145
  • HX coupe: $13,915
  • LX sedan: $15,345
  • EX coupe: $15,965
  • EX sedan: $17,245
  • Si: $17,960

We recommend the LX 4-doors and HX coupes as the best values. Both come with much more standard equipment (such as air conditioning, power windows, and power door locks) than the economy-minded CX and DX models, without raising the price too much.

Buyers with a little more to spend should also consider the EX models, which come with a useful bump in horsepower and additional features, including keyless entry and a moonroof. EX 4-doors also come standard with anti-lock brakes. The manual-only Si coupe is much faster than the other Civics and a genuine performance bargain.

2000 Honda Civic Performance

Engine Options

The 2000 Honda Civic has four engine options:

  • 106-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), or 5-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.
  • 115-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a CVT or 5-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.
  • 127-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.
  • 160-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.

Compared with the class? CX, DX, HX and LX models perform below average for the class. The more powerful EX is about average, while the Si is above average.

Fuel Economy

  • 106-horsepower (manual/automatic): 30/27 EPA-estimated combined mpg*
  • 115-horsepower (manual/CVT): 33/31 mpg
  • 127-horsepower (manual/automatic): 28/27 mpg
  • 160-horsepower: 25 mpg

*The EPA uses a mixture of highway and city driving for its combined estimate.

Compared with the class? The CX, DX, and HX models are all well above average, while the EX is slightly above average.

2000 Honda Civic Warranty

  • 3 years / 36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. Covers many parts and systems but doesn’t include normal use items such as spark plugs, filters, brake linings, or wiper blades.
  • 3 years / 36,000 miles powertrain. Covers major engine and transmission components.
  • 5 years / unlimited miles rust perforation. Covers all parts and labor needed to repair exterior sheet metal panels if perforated by corrosion due to material or manufacturing defects.
  • All three warranties are measured from the in-service or delivery date of the vehicle, whichever comes first, and are transferable to used-car buyers.

Compared with the class? Common for the segment.

Best Civic with a blown engine!! love it!

Bought the car not knowing it had a blown engine! Put a new engine and replaced all the suspension components on the car and now it drives like a brand new car. Best investment!
