David Hammond Obituary

Hammond, David
Dr. David E. Hammond was called to his eternal life on May 2, 2024 at the age of 75.
David was born on August 25, 1948 to Murl and Mary Hammond of Vermontville, Michigan. He spent his early childhood years on the family farm and moved to Battle Creek where he graduated from Pennfield High School as Salutatorian of his class. Following high school, he received a bachelor's degree from Olivet College, a master's degree from the University of Michigan, and ultimately received his medical degree from Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. He continued his study of medicine with an internship at Bronson and Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan followed by a dermatology residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
In 1980, he returned to West Michigan to establish Grand Rapids Dermatology, his solo practice that he maintained for 40 years. He was a passionate care provider in the community who also dedicated his time to serving several medical organizations throughout his career. He was an advocate for improving patient health as an active member of the Kent County Medical Society and Michigan State Medical Society. He served on the Kent County Medical Society's Board of Directors, Board Treasurer, as well as President of the Board of Directors. He also served on the Kent Medical Foundation Board of Directors and the Kent County Medical Society's House of Delegates to the Michigan State Medical Society's House of Delegates where he wrote Resolutions in an effort to improve medical care for patients and policies to assist Michigan physicians.
To his patients and colleagues, David was highly regarded as a compassionate physician. He was extremely dedicated and gave of himself and his time to provide exceptional care, while taking a genuine interest in getting to know his patients. To his family and friends, he was cherished as a loving, caring, and loyal man. David's greatest joy in life was his family!
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 48 years, Lorraine Hammond; his children, Michael (Amy) Hammond, Sarah (Ryan) Edwards; granddaughters, Ella Hammond, Gwen Hammond, Claire Edwards, Reese Edwards; sister, Rosemary Hahn; brother-in-law, Chris Kahler; aunt, Norma Earl; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A visitation will be held Sunday, June 2, from 3pm to 7pm at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home located at 4291 Cascade Rd. SE in Grand Rapids. A Celebration of Life will take place Monday, June 3, at 11am at Mayflower Congregational Church in East Grand Rapids located at 2345 Robinson Road SE.
