The world is a terrifying place right now, so many of us are looking to entertainment as a brief form of escapism from real-world horrors. Stephen King is one of us, voraciously consuming the latest streaming offerings with glee and reporting back on Twitter.

King’s latest discovery is Netflix’s newest sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, a complex and fascinating look at humanity discovering an alien race.

The series synopsis, per Netflix, is as follows:

A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.

The series features a stellar ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong and Jonathan Pryce. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of Game of Thrones fame created, wrote, and executive produced 3 Body Problem with Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy, True Blood).

Check out Stephen King’s reaction below:

3 Body Problem is based on the novel of the same name by Chinese author Liu Cixin. The novel was first published in 2008 then translated into English in 2014. That translation then won a Hugo Award for Best Novel, which marked the first time an Asian writer won the award. The novel is hard science fiction, meaning it goes deep into descriptions of scientific concepts, especially when it comes to physics. It’s also the first in Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.

Benioff, Weiss, and Woo weren’t the first to tackle an adaptation of the complex novel. Another series adaptation titled Three-Body was released in 2023, but only in China. There’s also an unfinished film adaptation that was shelved in 2015.

Fans both new and old joined Stephen King to share their thoughts about the latest take on Liu Cixin’s world. Many praised the character development and the performances, especially by Benedict Wong and Zine Tseng. Others were baffled but fascinated with the series’ end.
