This week's Monday Night Raw was the Semifinals of the King and Queen of the Ring. The marquee matches wer Gunther vs. Jey Uso and Iyo Sky vs. Lyra Valkyria. Also on the show was a No.1 contenders match for the Women's Tag Team Championships, a surprise return by Sonya Deville, and a successful World Tag Team Titles defense.

Here are your winners and losers for Raw, May 20, 2024:

Winner: Gable Beats Sami Zayn

Sami Zayn kicked off the show and a solid singles match opened the show. Sami Zayn talked about the Triple Threat Match for the Intercontinental Championship and called it a match between Mind, Body, and Soul. Identifying himself as the soul of the match, he would bet on soul every time. Chad Gable and Alpha Academy came out to ringside. Gable ran down Zayn and his own group. Zayn asked Alpha Academy how long they would put up with his crap and that led to a singles match between Zayn and Gable.

As the action proceeded, Gable wanted his students to get involved and cheat. When Dupri and Tozawa couldn't bring themselves to take a cheap shot at Zayn, he threw them out. When he asked Otis to do so, Otis hesitated, which led to Gable slapping his number one student. Gable climbed back in the ring and planned to use the title to hit Zayn. He took a suplex for his trouble. But, as the official's back was turned, Otis did hit Zayn. That led to Gable hitting a back suplex for the pin. Otis didn't want to listen to his teacher but ultimately did. As Gable was celebrating his win, he stood in front of Otis so the camera would only be focused on the teacher.

This segment didn't necessarily feel like the kind of segment that should open Raw, but it was well done. Otis being conflicted about doing the right thing is nicely setting up a future split from the Alpha Academy.

Winner: Bron Breakker Snaps

Making his Monday Night Raw debut, Bron Breakker completely snapped on enhancement talent Kayle Dixon and speared him inside and outside the ring. When the official said Dixon couldn't continue and awarded the win to Breakker, that wasn't enough. He speared him again while the ref was helping the prone Dixon up. Breakker set up the ring steps to do even more damage, but officials came out to stop him. He grabbed a chair while everyone was attending to Dixon and blasted his fallen opponent with it. Breakker then grinned at Adam Pearce and said it was on him, presumably because the Raw GM didn't include him in the King of the Ring tournament.

This was definitely Breakker's heel turn and it was fairly well done. It's an interesting choice because fans could have gotten behind Breakker with a Goldberg-like push. WWE has chosen not to go that way. Backstage as medical was loading Dixon into an ambulance, Pearce tried to reprimand Breakker, who said, "You can't control me. You didn't put me in King of the Ring, this one's on you."

Winner: Lyra Valkyria

Lyra Valkyria advanced to the Queen of the Ring finals with a victory over former NXT Women's Champion Iyo Sky. The match was intense, with Sky dominating early before Valkyria mounted a comeback. The second half featured back-and-forth action but ended with Valkyria dodging Sky's Over the Moonsault and picking up a quick reversal pin for the victory.

This is a big win for Valkyria, who Triple H and the creative team obviously see something in. She's hit Raw running and she has immediately become a contender in the women's division. She has put on solid matches and this one with Sky was another early notch on her belt.

Winner: Awesome Truth Retain Their Tag Tag Titles

Awesome Truth battled The Judgment Day and successfully defended their World Tag Team Championships. The finish included interference from Carlito and then a save by Braun Strowman. The Monster Among Monsters easily tossed Carlito aside and scared McDonagh into R-Truth's Attitude Adjustment.

This was a good match with a lot going on. WWE furthered the narrative that Carlito wants to be in the group, while Stromwan is playing underdog and little guy protector.

Backstage, Bron Breakker attacked Ricochet, Damian Priest had an awkward interaction with Carlito, Gunther cut a pre-show promo from the empty arena and Sonya Deville made her long-awaited return.

Loser: Liv Morgan and Becky Lynch Promo

Ahead of Saturday's Women's World Championship Match, Becky Lynch cut a promo but was interrupted by her opponent, Liv Morgan. Morgan insulted Lynch, calling her selfish, and teased accepting an immediate fight before backing down. She said she was going to do the smart thing and wait for her title match.

Morgan was doing her best to play the heel but the exchange wasn't great. Nothing really happened here, other than some back-and-forth that most fans won't remember tomorrow.

Winner/Loser: Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark Become No. 1 Contenders for Women's Tag Team Titles

Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark Raw March 3, 2024 Cropped

Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark became the No. 1 contenders for the Women's Tag Team Championship by winning a Fatal 4-Way match against Katana Chance and Kayden Carter, Maxxine Dupri and Ivy Nile, and Damage CTRL's Kairi Sane and Dakota Kai. Dupri had the crowd behind her, nearly clinching a surprise victory. However, Stark and Baszler were too strong and secured the win with Stark's powerbomb into Baszler's knee strike.

This match was fine and the right team probably won here. WWE has done a solid job with Dupri. It wasn't long ago fans at live events were jeering her out of the building. She's now a sympathetic underdog fans are cheering for.

Winner: Gunther Advances To The Finals

Gunther beat Jey Uso in the main event and will be headed to Jeddah for the King of the Ring finals. The two men exchanged shots early. Uso flying into the post allowed The Ring General to overpower Uso, systematically taking him out with Gunther's signature chops and strikes while targeting his arm. Uso fought back with the crowd behind him, but Gunther was ultimately too much.

Every time Uso would get something going, Gunther would stop him in his tracks. Gunther worked Uso's right arm, blasted him with numerous chops, and then eventually choked out Uso, securing his spot in the finals. The fans were on Usos side, especially when he hit a spear and an USO splash. The official had been taken out and the hesitation cost Uso.

This was a great match but the predictable winner here was Gunther. He'll either face Randy Orton with The Viper the likely opponent.
