beautiful, easy hike! the hardest part was in the beginning which was a short steady incline. the views were spectacular all the way to Cliff lake, which is only about a mile away from Diamond lake. very quiet trail on a Saturday afternoon! the road to trailhead wasn't the best but certainly doable if you take it slow.
We enjoyed the hike from Diamond Lake to Cliff Lake. Cliff Lake is beautiful, and the trail is in good condition. There is a trail going around to the left. There are even orange blazes on a couple of trees. We were hoping it led to the ridge, but it ends in a muddy area. It was worth the exploration because of all the beautiful views.
Trail is only one mile to the lake, but very overgrown in spots. Trail is still easy to find, just lots of scratchy plants on bare legs. We fished and caught nothing but it was pretty windy and choppy so the fish may have been hiding down deep?! Didn’t see any rise or swimming around in three days. Hidden camp site on other side of the lake in the trees. Mountain goat close by in the evening and ran through camp night one. Gorgeous area. Tons of wild flowers. Bugs weren’t bad at all.
Made the drive up in low clearance vehicle. Parking right next to lower lake. Easy hike to upper with moderate elevation gain. Met quite a few people. At the upper lake, there is a small barely maintained trail that hooks to the north side of it which leads to a meadow with streams and areas to mountaineer. Climbed about halfway up and enjoyed lunch. Last of the snowpack on the upper lake and the surrounding peaks. Beautiful spring flowers. Bear Grass, Columbine, avalanche Lillies, purple mountain shooting stars… no fauna.
Awesome trail. Snow was melting so streams were overflowing causing mud issues in a couple areas, so exploring ways around was exciting. Ice was still on the top lake which made for beautiful pictures. Loved this trail. Probably best on a weekday, I can imagine the trailhead parking could get a little crowded. Hiking great, wouldn’t be good for biking.
Beautiful little hike. Some spots were muddy and there were definitely mosquitoes out, but nothing too bad. Walking through the hillside full of wildflowers was incredible. Cliff Lake still has a bit of snow surrounding it. The access road to the trailhead is steep, rocky, and narrow, so I recommend using an all-wheel drive vehicle with good clearance.
Trail is well maintained, gentle incline with several wooden steps and bridges over creeks. Gorgeous fall colors, recorded >20 mushroom types in fruit and cliff lake is stunning. There is adequate but sub par wayfinding. The road getting there is steep and pitted in places. There is a sheltered pit latrine near the parking lot.
