76% Tomatometer 33 Reviews 76% Audience Score Fewer than 50 Ratings In 2003 Melbourne, Jewish Holocaust survivor Lali Sokolov shares his story of love and resilience, told through fractured and traumatic memories, with novice writer Heather Morris. It starts in 1942, when he volunteers for "work duty" to aid the Slovakian war effort but finds himself sent to the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp. Those not murdered immediately are forced to build the emerging Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp. The smell of death hangs in the air as Lali realizes he's condemned to work in a kill factory. When he's offered a job tattooing numbers onto prisoner's arms, he takes it in the hope of surviving. But unexpected meaning is given to this hell when he meets a beautiful Slovakian woman -- prisoner 4562. For Lali it's love at first sight, and before long "Gita," as he will come to know her, drives his will to survive. Through perseverance and manipulation of an SS guard, Baretzki, Lali finds Gita again, but the risks he takes to keep them both alive may backfire. Read More Read Less

      Critics Consensus

A dramatization of atrocity and the fickleness of memory that can be difficult to watch, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is dramatically uneven but undeniably affecting.

Carol Midgley Times (UK) It is probably easy to pick holes in this adaptation but it is still a compelling piece of storytelling. Rated: 4/5 May 7, 2024 Full Review Nick Hilton Independent (UK) The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a strangely self-hating work. In attempting to disavow its airport-novel, schlocky origins, it inadvertently creates a new tension. Rated: 2/5 May 3, 2024 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times It's an honorable project, honorably made, moving at times, horrifying at others, in broad strokes and small details. May 3, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz While wary and weary of fractured narratives in similarly-themed dramas, here it actually works quite well, allowing the audience to see the aged Sokolov work through his trauma and be challenged by his ghosts. May 27, 2024 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Part survivor account and part love story, this adaptation of the popular novel highlights the complexities of Holocaust-related survivor's guilt while telling the story of a Jewish couple finding love in a Nazi extermination camp. May 22, 2024 Full Review Andrew Anthony Observer (UK) Yes, it’s a love story, but while love may conquer all, it can’t in this instance capture the horror of the conditions in which it flowered, much less rise above it. Jackie H Heartbreaking but beautiful filming. Super sad and triggering but a great story. A+++ acting! Deserves a higher rating. They didn't hold back on this one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review l T Everyone should watch it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Louise K Wasn't sure I could take this emotional weight of show, but watched episode 1 - and sure I was right, it's totally destroying, but beautiful made and especially well cast. I'll be taking it ep by ep when I can bear it, but will keep watching. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Mario R Jonah hauer king deserves all the awards for his performance here, heartbreaking and beautiful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Michael S There are some powerful moments, but sadly nothing we haven't already seen. It is very disjointed and has no real flow to it. I haven't read the book so maybe the source material wasn't very good, or perhaps the screenwriter needed to write a more cohesive screenplay. Most of the acint was good, and yet there was nothing riveting about any of the performances, overall it is ok, but sadly nothing to write home about. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/24 Full Review Maija A It’s a watchable show. Unfortunately the screenplay isnt great or director just didn’t know how to execute well. Or both... The entire story struggles with basic flow and there are noticeable mistakes that could have been fixed but weren’t. (For example young and old Lali have completely different accents..?) it just feels like the production was trying so hard to give justice to the book and the original story that they failed to pay attention to detail and forgot that they still have to make a show that fits TV. Even Melanie Lynskey who is otherwise absolutely brilliant actor seems to be struggling and just feels awkward. No matter how good one is as an actor, even they can’t fix a bad screenplay.
