Hollyoaks spoilers ahead.

Hollyoaks actor James Sutton has teased what's to come in John Paul McQueen's dark new storyline.

This autumn, Sutton's character has been at the epicentre of a conversion therapy plot involving high school teacher Carter Shepherd. Despite Goldie McQueen's reservations about Carter, John Paul has recently been developing a friendship with the teacher.

The next stage of Carter's agenda is trying to convince John Paul that Scott Drinkwell needs to remove his flyers for an HIV prevention drug from the Youth Center.

Asked by Inside Soap magazine what he can reveal about future episodes, Sutton replied: "Carter's backstory hasn't been made apparent yet to the audience, so that is going to come out, and we'll learn the reasons behind what he's doing.

"There will be a lot of stuff to unpick, and a lot of fallout. It's going to be big!"

He added: "We all want to tell rich and interesting stories - and if they can be impactful, make people think and effect change, that is an amazing opportunity. This is very topical, and I hope it gets people talking."

When the storyline was first announced, undercover reporter Josh Parry (who offered guidance on it) shared: "As someone who themselves has been through gay conversion therapy as an undercover reporter, I have experienced first-hand the misleading and often damaging claims made by so-called conversion therapists.

"I think Hollyoaks is the perfect platform to bring the reality of these practices to life so that the public can better understand them and the impact they can have.

"The team has put so much effort into making the storyline engaging and entertaining but above-all accurate and realistic on what is an extremely emotive topic."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
