This is the first volume of two. It is not a captivating story, but it is strangely beguiling. Something like a Marxist myth of origins, detailing the development of a set of communities in a region of South Wales in the eastern Brecon Beacons from pre-history up to and including the Roman invasion. There is a fair amount of virtue signalling as the narrative shows the growth of various tribes with their differing industries, folklore, customs and beliefs. Much is pure invention, although some of the names of places and myths may have basis in fact. But what merits the four stars is the sheer ambition and scope of the narrative, and its credibility. It succeeds, I believe, in its aim of showing a deep connection of the landscape to people and vice versa.

If you're going to visit the Black Mountains of Wales, you should read these books. If you're going to Wales but not visiting the Black Mountains, you're missing the best part.

Really very interesting if you know the area. Probably a bit clonky if you don't.
