A Flock of Seagulls is an English new wave synthpop band from Liverpool, UK. Formed in 1979 the band has achieved cult status partially due to Mike Score’s haircut, and has been mentioned ironically in films and television shows such as “Pulp Fiction”, “The Wedding Singer” and “Friends”.
The band was formed by brothers Mike and Ali Score with Francis Maudsley and Willie Woo, who was soon replaced by Paul Reynolds, brought in to complete the line up. Before performing live the band would practice above Mike’s hairdressing salon. Once confident enough to perform in front of a crowd, the band started to play in clubs where they quickly gained a following and peaked the interest of record producers. The group released a single called “Telecommunication” which became a dance hit in the US, placing at number 19 on the US dance chart. This success across the pond attracted the attention of Jive Records who signed them to their label.
The band quickly released their debut album, “A Flock of Seagulls” in 1982, which peaked at number 10 in the US and number 5 in Canada. A single from the album, "I Ran (So Far Away)" became a runaway success hitting the number one spot in Australia and reaching the top 10 in the United States.
Despite their popularity abroad, the band had yet to achieve significant success in the UK but that was set to change with the release of their 1983 album “Listen”. The lead single from the album, “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” climbed to number 10 on the UK singles chart and helped the album become a top 20 hit in the UK and the US.
The band’s next album, “The Story of a Young Heart” was moderately successful but ultimately was unable to attract the same attention as A Flock of Seagulls’ first two albums. The band’s next two albums, “Dreams Come true” released in 1985 and “The Light At the End of the World” released ten years later failed to even make it onto the charts. The band’s momentum waned and despite the recognition they had earned for making headway in the new wave scene, the band broke up. Mike Score still occasionally tours using the band name and is currently pursuing a solo career.
Read moreAs a big fan of 80's music, I never miss the chance to see an 80's band in concert. I missed most of these bands perform the first time around. I don't make the same mistake twice. When I heard that Flock of Seagulls was performing in my city, I bought tickets immediately as I'm a big fan of these cheeky Liverpudlians.
On the day of the show, I spent a few hours getting my hair ready. I wanted to look like the singer from Flock of Seagulls. I was sure others would do the same, but I didn't care. I was so excited.I arrived at the show, with my hair looking amazing. I found my seat and waited for the show to start. The lights dimmed and I heard that familiar guitar riff. The band had started to play their hit song "I Ran."
I bobbed my head to the music and sang my lungs out. Although Michael Score had a different hairstyle, I did not regret my choice. I think during one of the later songs, he pointed to my hair and gave me the thumbs up. (I may have been a bit drunk but I felt so proud.) The rest of the set was as great as the first song.I left the concert with a huge smile on my face. It was one of the best shows in recent memory.
There was a huge explosion of new wave bands in the UK during the 80s and one of the most recognisable was A Flock of Seagulls partly due to the fringe of lead vocalist Mike Score. The hair may be long gone now but the awesome synth pop riffs found on the likes of 'Space Age Love Song' remain ever present.
The lineup may have changed rather dramatically since the group was originally formed way back in 1979 but the current quartet knows the music well and impresses fans with their clear musical skill. Although the group has not had an album hit the charts in over thirty years, the fans continue to sing along to the memorable choruses of 'I Ran (So Far Away)' and 'The More You Live, the More You Love'. The discography holds something of cult status with the older fans so the opportunity to see these vintage gems performed live is clearly a real treat. The whole room is united for one momentous chorus singalong to 'Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)' which remains their biggest UK hit.
Love the music of a flock of seagulls of the 80's. Not so much the same band of today. The sound system of Live B is definitely subpar having said, even the best sound system can't enhance the sound of this yesteryear band. To hear them last night was embarrassing for them and a strain on the ears. About a half hour into their gig, my party and I left. The line from 'The Raven' sounded in my head 'never more' to this venue or to this band in the flesh. My party and i are city girls. All venues from this point on will be done there. Because the vibe, the venues, the band's need not apply when bands and singers no longer carry a tune. Sign me, this birds flown the coop.
I actually went to rock of the 80's. Flock of seagulls opened with the more you love followed by i ran and space age love song. Unbelivably sounded the same as the first time i saw them in 1983. Mike score still has it. Also performing were missing persons, when in rome, men without hats, eddie money, marc almond, dramarama, modern english, boys don't cry and human league. What a walk down memory lane for me. All i listen to are 80's bands. Entire concert was awesome
There is no such thing as an 80's party without Flock of Seagulls. They are a band that gets better with age. I always love to see them. They always bring their best songs and a few you might remember but forgot about. Will see them again and again.
I attended the Lexington, KY Manchester Music Hall. AMAZING performance from A Flock of Seagulls. It was nice seeing Mr. Mike Score perform. Glad to hear new music is going to be released. Looking forward to hearing!
Super gig in a small intimate venue.
Great sound
Great lights
Fantastic atmosphere
The place was rocking and when the classics were played - the crowd went wild.
Excellent event.
The show was OKAY. Bouncers at the venue were assholes and kicked me out but I snuck back in just enough time to hear the end of I Ran. Overall an average show.
