Athletic Bilbao came from behind to make the score 1-1 versus Mallorca in the final of the Copa del Rey thanks to Oihan Sancet’s 50th-minute effort. As both sides couldn’t be separated in 120 minutes of play, the match went to penalties where the Lions prevailed 4-2. Ernesto Valverde’s side will now shift their focus to La Liga, with the Basque outfit aiming to secure a top-four finish for the first time since 2013-14. Athletic secured a 2-0 win over Alaves in their last home-fixture and it was their 16th league-win of the campaign. However, Valverde’s men were beaten 2-0 by leaders Real Madrid in their last top flight outing. The Lions boast the fifth-best home-record in the league this season, collecting 36 points from 15 matches.
Villarreal, on the other hand, have recorded 10 wins, eight draws and 12 defeat from 30 La Liga games this season. Their last win came against Valencia mid-way through last month thanks to Jorge Cuenca’s second-half effort. It was their third successive win in all competitions. However, on April 1, Marcelino’s side lost out to Atletico despite the fact that Alexander Sorloth canceled out Axel Witsel’s opener. Meanwhile, the reverse fixture versus Athletic earlier this season ended 3-2 in favour of the Lions
