I've never played Trove but it caught my attention recently and it looks pretty fun. I've heard it's dead but I've been wondering if it's worth playing/giving it a shot?

The Trove player base has definitely shrunk over the years, but I’d say that it’s stopped getting smaller. I think that one of the benefits of Trove is the small player base. Anyone who you meet in Trove is probably gonna be someone you’ll play with for weeks and months on end.
Trove isn't really dead... it's mostly a solo game and the group parts are still going strong. It only takes about 3-5 minutes to form a group for a delve. You should give it a shot- it's free.

It has like that one active community that still plays it but overall it has not much players so you won't meet too many new people. Also the devs did some questionable decisions by removing a games core feature but if you don't know it you probably won't miss it it just pissed off many players so a majority left.

Yeah I paid for the sugar skull candy bar Arian costume before I even got the class. I also paid for the dracolyte before I knew how to get classes.
I recently started a new account just to feel the new player expirience but swore to my self that I wont buy anything... 13k power rank and about 30 hours later I have spent 15€ on the game.
was top 1.5k on neon ninja leaderboard and didnt spend any money 27k pr before the whole delve thing got introduced

Only you can answer that question for yourself. Trove is free to play, so it will not cost you anything but your time and effort to give it a try.
Trove has always been a niche game without a large player base. So while a lot of players do leave, we seem to have a similar amount of new players to offset that.
I started playing Trove in 2015, and I have had 3 long breaks of 9-12 months from the game in that time period.
I'm not sure exactly what it is about Trove that holds my interest, but it is one of the few MMO's that I keep coming back to.
In some aspects, casual game play is a better playing style than the hardcore style. You can play Trove casually. Some days I only logged in for 20-30 minutes of game play to do a daily and then logged off.
Yeah it's the kind of game you watch youtube while playing.
some ppl complain about crashing but other than that it's a good game (until late game which I heard is just a grind for crystal 3) so I would recommend the game
It's the kind of game you grab a snacks and a drink/ pop on a video on youtube and just go through the worlds in the tiny dungeons. It's fun. Despite the simple premise you can do complex character builds and craft dragons. It's pretty good.
