Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s new romance-action film The Fall Guy is now in theaters everywhere. Wondering when you can watch the movie from the comfort of your home? Discover when The Fall Guy will likely arrive on streaming and digital platforms below.
The Fall Guy centers on an ex-Hollywood stuntman, played by Gosling, who is drawn back into the world of stunts and finds himself in a real high-stakes mission when the lead actor of a big-budget studio film, directed by his ex, Jody Moreno (Blunt), disappears. Winston Duke, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, and Stephanie Hsu also star.
The film is from stuntman and director David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Bullet Train) and is loosely inspired by the 1981-1986 TV series The Fall Guy, in which Lee Majors portrayed Colt, a stuntman and bounty hunter. Although the movie shares the same name, it takes a different direction from the original series.
“Because this movie was inspired by ‘The Fall Guy’ the TV show — that ’80s show when I was a kid that sort of lit the fuse for stunt people from my generation — it felt like we should go back and do some old school, practical stunts and really lean in to see if we can do them in a really fresh way, but make sure we’re paying homage to the classics,” Leitch said on the IndieWire Toolkit podcast.
The director explained that for The Fall Guy, he adapted an old-school approach to action filmmaking, rather than relying on modern action films that are often sci-fi or superhero-related.
“The high fallout of the helicopter — we really don’t do that much anymore because we can do wires,” Leitch added. “You’ll have wires attached. We’ll have a descender rig that decels you, and visual effects erase the wires. It’s a rather simple rotoscope sort process, so why not? Right. But back in the day, we would always use airbags or boxes to jump [from] heights. It’s kind of a lost art. It was fun to bring it back and to see the craftsmanship in the artistry.”
Meanwhile, Gosling had to face his fear of heights while executing a 12-story drop while filming the movie. “You could see the fear in my eyes,” the actor revealed to USA Today. “I have a fear of heights. And they dropped me 12 stories.” He continued, “I think I blacked out. Honestly, I don’t remember much.”
Blunt also recalled seeing a frightened Ryan before he had to fall backward from the 12th floor of a high-rise. “Ryan had to put sunglasses on during that stunt because he was so scared,” she added. “He was worried you’d see the whites of his eyes. You could hear a pin drop. I was very scared watching you do that.”
