Moana 2 Is Coming to Theaters This November, Reveals Disney in Surprise Announcement

A live-action reimagining of 'Moana' is also in the works

Moana is getting an animated sequel in addition to an upcoming live-action reimagining.

Disney Animation announced Wednesday that Moana 2 is coming to theaters this November, sharing a brief teaser.

Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise, and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November," said Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger in a statement.

According to a synopsis, Moana 2 "takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced."

The animated sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr., featuring music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina.

The hit 2016 film is also getting a live-action version coming soon, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of demigod Maui there.

Last April, Disney announced the live-action version of Moana. The voice behind Moana, Mean Girls star Auli'i Cravalho is serving as an executive producer on that project as a new actress takes on the lead role.

In a statement at the time, Cravalho, 23, said of the character, "She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses. Moana's strength and perseverance are inspiring — to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I'm looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way."

Moana 2 is in theaters Nov. 27.
