About
Entry to the castle grounds is free of charge. The Castle has stood proudly on the banks of the River Trent for nearly 900 years. History of the Castle includes the death of King John, Knights Templar and as well as the English Civil War, War of the Roses, Anarchy Wars and Baronnial Wars. Guided tours of the Castle are conducted normally on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Surfaced pathways in the castle and gardens allow suitable access for wheelchairs. During the visit, relax in the quiet garden areas and admire the picturesque views. Entertainment often occurs seasonally, with a bandstand for concerts available, and makes for a great day out. Newark Castle and Gardens offer nearby parking, so it is easily accessible by car. It is also close to historic market places; Southwell market and Newark market, so why not visit the pretty market towns too.

- VikinglongboatDerby, United Kingdom145 contributionsPleasant walk aroundPleasant enough walk through the small gardens and do the 'loop' of the castle ruins along side the river. Some info boards scattered about the place but other than that, nothing more than a half hour amble really but can't grumble as it is free and it is an interesting and impressive ruin in it's own right. I had read that King John of England was killed here which was uncanny as we had recently visited the tomb of King John inside Worcester Cathedral. Called into Newark to have a look around. The castle must have been an impressive sight in its day and what is left is not unimpressive. The was a duck race on the River Trent beneath the castle on the day we visited.

Newark castle is essentially a ruin on the banks of the River Trent. There are a couple of walls standing and the rest of the site is a small public park that is accessible from the street. There is no charge to enter. The remaining walls are impressive but this is all there is to see.

When we drove into Newark-on-Trent, the first we saw as we cross the bridge was the ruins of Newark Castle. After finding a place to park, we went to the Newark Castle Gardens, as we explore the grounds and looked at the castle ruins. A large part of the structure still stands and there are signposts describing the castle in the old days. Do read the signpost for a historical depiction of what happened in the past to appreciate the castle better. Definitely worth a visit. Entry is free.

Although the castle has only two sides and is a shell it is still worth a look as it is situated along side of a river with a park inside the castle.

The review was written by my Grandaughter so please excuse the spelling and syntax. We did look at the website and as we went on a Wednesday we expected the Castle areas open to the public to be accessible, but all the doors were locked and there was no one available. I read that what we see standing was rebuilt by the Victorians. Is this an accurate rebuild of a medieval castle..?

Hello. The castle was open as advertised on Wednesday 4th and 11th April from 10am to 2pm and the King John Exhibition open in the North West Tower so I can only think you may of come outside the advertised opening hours. After the castle was slighted in the 17th century after the Civil war of 1642 to 1646, 30% of the original Castle remains. It wasn't rebuilt by the Victorians but they did some additions to secure areas of castle that were in decay. I hope this helps.

Hello and apologises but I have only been alerted to your question. This is the castle and we do not deal with the boat trips. please google Newark Castle Line who do boat trips.
Is there an admittance fee, if so how much is it?

Hello.
Newark Castle and gardens are free to enter. However if you want to go on the dungeon tour or towers tour you will need to book and pay £5 for each.
Details on how to do this and days and times of tours can be found at Newark Castle's website.
Hope this helps
