VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – One person was hospitalized and three people were arrested in connection to a shooting Sunday night in Virginia Beach.

According to police, the call for the shooting came in around 5:42 p.m. near 28th Street and Atlantic Avenue. Police say one victim has been transported to a local hospital.

Police Chief Paul Neudigate described the incident Monday afternoon as “another marijuana deal gone bad (and the) seller was shot with his own gun after the buyer(s) grabbed it from him before they fled with the drugs he was trafficking.”

Police said 25-year-old Chesapeake resident Troy Cushman, along with a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, have been arrested in connection to the incident.

Cushman has been charged with robbery, conspiracy to rob, two counts of use of a firearm, aggravated malicious assault, and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with robbery, conspiracy to rob, malicious wounding, and use of a firearm. The 16-year-old girl has been charged with conspiracy to rob.

A person working at the Ramada Plaza told 10 On Your Side the shooting happened near their parking lot, but they did not provide any further details.

Walking along the boardwalk on Monday, Tammy Curry told us she saw the police response to the shooting from her window.

“I saw a lot of police activity, in broad daylight. That’s discomforting,” she said.

Virginia Beach resident Patrick McCullough lives nearby.

“We thought we heard some gunshots,” McCullough said. “You’re never quite sure if it’s fireworks or gun shots or whatever. But I was hoping it wasn’t gun shots. It’s getting to the point where you don’t really feel safe.”
