Atlético Madrid set to extend Axel Witsel’s contract despite defensive shake-up

Despite a challenging season and a looming Champions League qualification battle, Atlético Madrid have reportedly decided to extend the contract of veteran defender Axel Witsel.

The 35-year-old Belgian has been a key figure for Diego Simeone’s side this season, filling in admirably at center-back due to injuries and departures. His versatility and experience have earned him the praise of both fans and the club’s hierarchy.

Witsel’s current contract expires in June 2024, and according to Spanish newspaper Marca, negotiations for a one-year extension are already underway.

The decision to retain Witsel comes amidst a potential defensive overhaul at Atlético Madrid. With Mario Hermoso already confirmed to leave as a free agent, Stefan Savic, Caglar Soyuncu, and Reinildo Mandava could also follow suit.

Simeone is keen to bolster his defensive options, with at least two new center-backs expected to arrive in the summer transfer window. However, despite the potential influx of new talent, Witsel’s experience and leadership are still valued by the club.

While Witsel may not be a regular starter in the 2024-25 season, his presence as a rotation option and experienced leader would undoubtedly be an asset to Atlético Madrid.
