I’ve been going to gateway for a few years now and it’s been a great high school experience, this year is one of my best. My freshman year was so depressing but not because of the school it was mainly me. But as years went by I started getting more and more comfortable at my school, making friends, joining clubs, and making great respectful friendships with teachers. I’m glad I am zoned for Gateway because I honestly can’t see myself anywhere else. Even though I’m not so popular but I see this school as a second home in a way. Even the people that are portrayed to be rude like “popular kids” are actually really friendly once you get to know them. My graduating class have know each other for years, some of us since elementary, but in our junior year, we’re all so close with one another that I’m not shy in classrooms, everyone is friends with everyone. So, I’d say Gateway High school is really really welcoming:)
I am in the IB program so I’m in a way separated from my average classmates in my grade but I think the school tries very hard to be open and connected with the students the best the school can be. They try to offer as many electives as teachers are qualified to teach. They enforce the county rules to the best of their ability while also trying to understand the students and the students perspective.
This school wants nothing more than for their students to go on and be successful in college so they have been opening more college tours and visits and field trips as well as trying to prepare the students and offering more classes for students to get their college credits out the way. The school also pays for the students to be able to take the ACT and SAT many times in hopes of improved scores for students especially those who can’t afford to pay to take it again.
The faculty, especially the principal, also pride themselves and forming student connections and helping them grow.

I had a pretty average experience. We were a title 1 school so, most students came from low income households, along with that came with problems from home that impacted school performance. The counselors weren’t really that helpful, they mostly saw us towards our last 2 years of school. By the time they did, it wasn’t much help that they could do. Lunch/breakfast was free which was great because my meals were never consistent at home. My teachers were the best thing about my high school experience. They made it their mission for me not to fail, which I really appreciated because I was always an academically good student. I was going through things the last few years that impacted my grades. Things that should change are more involved counselors that really help their students. More activities that increase the school’s budget for things other than sports. Better information in class about college besides being in AVID. After school transportation. I could’ve been more involved.
