Great and easy hike that is kid friendly. We could see traces of wildflowers but lots of great views along the way. Pay attention to the map as it is easy to how down the wrong path onto another trail. Also getting there early is always a good idea - we snagged the last spot at 9am but you could park roadside along the stretch leading upto the lot.
Great vista point to look out onto the valley below and the mountains on the other side. Also, the shady trails on the way up, and back down, the mountain were most definitelye hexceptionally clear day and could see the bay and beyond it was also a warm sunny day so the shady trails up and down the mountain were most definitely appreciated.
Very good condition, 95% dry. Good footing, wide trail mostly. 75% sun, 25% shade, bring a hat and water. Pretty wildflowers, a little beyond peak
Most of this trail loop is exposed to the sun and about half is fairly windy. Wildflowers are just starting to come out. Also saw several birds including a couple of hawks. I believe part of this trail is closed but there is a narrower trail that can be used to bypass the closed portion by hikers (but not bikes or horses)
I have hiked this many times. Last review 5/14/23. Hiked CCW. Not much new to report. I saw two turkeys. No significant wildflowers yet. Not one poppy!! As usual the parking lot was packed. Pleasant hike with sweeping views everywhere. Bright kelly green grasslands. This hike is on a wide open plane with panoramic view of bay area and coastline. Only the ancient oaks segment is shaded. No parking fee. Good for families. Bike or hike. Only about 10% shaded. Minor muddy areas. You have to share this trail with the bikers. Hiking boots are not required. Poles are helpful
Beautiful well-maintained trail with proper markers. Very few gradual inclines along the route. Had to make way for a few mountain bikers but not too many. Park opens before sunrise and closes after sunset. Large parking lot but it was completely full when I was leaving so get there early. Parking is free.
Very muddy given heavy rains of late with some tree debris on trail, but passable. Coal Mine Ridge Preserve section was steep uphill & quite narrow trail, but a few spring wildflowers are already in bloom. Interesting looking fungi, plus an occasional view through the trees & rushing creeks below. Heard red-tailed hawks & some other birds. This was a longer hike so decided to walk back along a paved neighborhood street (Willowbrook) & Sequoia Senior Living rather than via Windy Hill to avoid muddy trail on return. That’s where the red-tailed hawk was seen up close sitting in a treetop.
