Silica Gel Uses: 19 Practical Ways To Use Silica Gel Packets

There are a lot of great uses for silica gel packets, so don't throw them away!

Don’t toss those desiccant packets you find in packages until you’ve read through the many practical silica gel uses in this post! After all, you’ve probably seen dozens, if not hundreds, of them included in a variety of packaged products, and you may have even wondered what they’re used for.

I’ve asked myself the same question, so I decided to do some research to find out everything I could about those mysterious little packets. It turns out they have a number of useful applications around the house, from preventing rust to defogging your windshield!

We’ll explore 19 silica gel uses in this post, and cover how to revitalize old silica gel packets too, but before we jump in, let’s begin with some basic facts about silica gel.

What Is Silica Gel And How Is It Used?

The silica beads found in desiccant packets are used to absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. Adding silica gel packets to packaging is an efficient and cost-effective way to protect products that might spoil, grow mold, or otherwise suffer if exposed to too much moisture or humidity.

You can buy silica gel packets online, but you can also just collect the ones that come in packaged products you buy. You can often find them included in the packaging of electronics, vitamins and supplements, leather goods, beef jerky, and more, so it shouldn’t take long to build up your collection.

Note: Despite the very prominent ‘DO NOT EAT’ warning printed on the packs (which is good advice nevertheless), silica gel itself is non-toxic and not actually poisonous. However, the packets may contain traces of other harmful chemicals, so be sure to keep them out of the reach of pets and small children.

How Long Do Silica Packets Last?

Silica gel packets generally last between 1 and 3 years, depending on how and where they’re stored. But even after a few years, you don’t have to toss them in the trash, because you can reactivate the silica gel beads inside quite easily!

To do this, place the silica gel packs you want to reactivate in a single layer on a baking sheet. Put the baking sheet in your oven at 175°F for 15 minutes to eliminate and remove moisture trapped inside. Allow the packs to cool, then store them in a ziplock bag until needed.

  • Could I safely use silica packets to put inside bread bags so the bread doesn’t get so moist? I grocery shop every 2 weeks to save money, and every now and then I have to throw some pieces of bread in the trash because they get moldy. I’m hoping these are safe to put in food!

  • Silica gel packets are great to put in my ballet slippers and pointe shoes immediately after class. They get pretty moist inside and doing this really helps minimize odor and evaporate moisture faster. I also do this for my tap shoes!

  • Place a silica gel packet in your dishwasher detergent container to keep moisture from causing the individual drop-in “actionpacks” from sticking together.

  • I store my greeting cards, note cards, and general envelopes in zip closing plastic bags with several desiccant packages. That keeps them from sticking closed in humid weather. I used to lose envelopes a lot and now I almost never do. A bonus is that I can save money by buying greeting card assortments and sorting them by type (birthday, thinking of you, etc.) into these bags. That saves digging around for the type of card I want, and keeps me from running out of any one type.

  • I use the silica packs for a variety of things, too! For years, I had trouble with some of my spices (especially garlic powder) clumping and getting rock hard. I haven’t had any issues since adding a silica packet to the spice bottles!
I also make my own dog treats, both baked and dehydrated. I find that storing them with a silica packet helps keep them fresh longer.
Thanks for all of your great tips, Jillee!

  • Great info on silica packets but you didn’t say what silica is. Also, this article was difficult to read with your video in the middle of the text! I was unable to close it out. Is this a Jillee Plus ploy to pay?

    • Nope, it is not a ploy! You should definitely be able to close out any ad or video – were you on a computer or on your phone? I’d love to take look and make sure that’s not happening!

  • You need to be very careful around the young , elderly, and those with poor eyesight. I walked in on my MIL years ago as she was shaking salt from a little packet on her food to be thrifty. It was silica gel. . .

  • DOes anyone have chafing from perspiration? My father worked outside in the Florida heat. He used to have a cloth packet with powdered alum in it he kept in his pocket. In this age of rules for protecting against illegal white powders, could a person use a silica gel packet in a front pocket?

  • Brilliant! Thank you. I live in a humid area and just started taking supplements on a regular basis. I’ll be using those packs from now on.

  • I’ve always kept silica gel packs in an airtight container where I store opened packets of crackers to keep them from going stale. I also refresh the gel packs by microwaving for 15-30 seconds depending on size

  • How do I know when they are no longer effective?? Surely they don’t last forEVER. Thanks Jillee, for sharing with us. You are AMAZING!

    • Helen, thanks for your lovely words. :-) You made my day! As far as your question…

In theory you use them alone – no softener or dryer sheets. I usually use both because it’s sooooo dry in Utah and I can’t get rid of static without a dryer sheet. But most people can use just the dryer balls! You should use 3-4 dryer balls for a small-medium load and all 6 for a large load.

They’re supposed to last up to 1,000 washes, so they’re good for a few years depending on how much laundry you do.

  • We live in and love our old non-airconditioned house, but open-window life requires some special adjustments. Notably, it’s almost impossible to keep envelopes from sticking closed because of humidity.

I store my envelopes with their notes or cards in zip-closed plastic bags with silicone gel packs, and that keeps them sorted by type, clean and flat and the envelopes useable. I also reuse those little plastic drums that pharmacists put in prescriptions in the same way.

    Thanks for the wonderful ideas!

    • I’ve been saving these “drums” but wasn’t sure if they could be used in the same ways as the packets. Thanks, Carolyn!
Any additional thoughts/suggestions on these, Jillee?

    • I also buy greeting cards in assortments and use those plastic bags to sort them into (birthday, thinking of you, etc.). It saves digging around for the right card when I’m in a hurry, makes storing them easier, and I know when I’m running low on one kind of card.

  • We have just completed an epic trip across Canada the United States. I have kept a couple of silica gel bags in my jewellery pouch and my silver jewellery has stayed bright and shiny for over a year – no cleaning necessary!

  • I collect product tins. I use them as decor, as well as for cookies, etc. every Christmas season. I was having trouble keeping them rust-free until I thought to use silica gel packs. I started putting one in every tin I store or display and haven’t had any rusty tins since then.

  • I buy batteries in bulk from Costco and throw my spare silica packs in the drawer I keep them in. Helps to prevent corrosion. I live in Houston – hot and humid!

  • I put a silica packet in each little divider section of my jewelry box, as well as 2-3 in each of the larger drawers. It helps to keep costume jewelry from turning and your good jewelry from tarnishing.

  • You are Brilliant; this is an amazing post!!! Thank you for sharing so many great ideas!!! I always cut and paste your posts and share them with my friends!!! I’m always telling them how simply brilliant you are!!!

  • I used a bunch of packets to get the smell out of an RV fridge that was in a fire…now the packets have a Strong burnt smell in them…can they be cleaned of the burnt smell…or should I just throw them away?

  • In your research did you uncover any safety warnings about the silica gel packs? I am concerned about your recommendation on how to use these packs. I used to go out to a warehouse and pack dried foods in large tins. We were instructed to always make sure one silica gel pack was included in each pack. However, we were warned most strongly to never reuse these packs and to take care not to tear or open the package. The reasoning was that to inhale the silica dust is extremely dangerous and can cause permanent breathing problems, even the possibility of death in a small child or pet.

  • I keep some of the packets in my jewelry storage bag. I’ve had piece get rusted before and Ha does to toss a few pairs of earrings. I don’t know if it prevents rusting, but I think it slows it down.

  • If you wear hearing aids, place a silica gel packet inside the case that holds your hearing aids when you’re not wearing them. It absorbs the moisture from wearing them and helps with the life of those tiny batteries! Cheers,

  • >
