About the Author
Lisa Towers has been raising mental health awareness for over a decade. In 2015 she was recognised in the Queens New Year Honours and awarded a British Empire Medal for her contribution. While working as a civil servant, Lisa co-founded a national staff support network, Break the Stigma, that brought positive change, support and, more importantly, a voice for those suffering from their mental health within a large Civil Service Department. She and a colleague were the brains behind well-being rooms introduced in many UK Government Office Buildings, staff mental health first aid training, and a Mental Health Buddy Support system. Lisa also teamed up with the National Mental Health Campaign 'Its Time to Talk', where she appeared in their TV advert and attended several high profile mental health events to share her story. Since leaving her career in 2019, Lisa has continued with her advocacy work reaching a broader audience using social media. About the author
Hi, I'm Lisa, the face behind Simply Anxious. My passion is helping people overcome their fear of anxiety and change their relationship with it so they can find freedom from its grip.
Anxiety has been a significant part of my life. I can honestly say that for 20 years, I struggled, trying to navigate through it, often resorting to self-medication and desperately trying to outrun it. It was an exhausting and painful way to live. Unfortunately, support was scarce back in the 1990s, and the help I received wasn't that effective. But I plodded on the best I could.
In 2014, I started advocating for anxiety awareness. I was tired of feeling like I had a dirty little secret 'anxiety'. I embarked on a journey across the UK, raising awareness and sharing my story wherever I could to inspire others and raise awareness. I appeared on TV and radio as part of a national mental health campaign, which led to my receiving a British Empire Medal from the Queen for my contributions to mental health advocacy.
In November 2019, I made a pivotal choice. I decided to prioritise my recovery and leave my career behind. This was the turning point in my life and my relationship with anxiety.
Today, I no longer struggle with an anxiety disorder. I have found freedom, giving me an entirely new perspective on life. This personal journey of mine has fueled my mission to change the narrative surrounding anxiety and promote mental and emotional well-being on par with physical well-being. That mission continues to be my passion.
My recovery is something I am incredibly proud of and grateful for. It restored my zest for life and opened up possibilities I never thought possible. I now help others to find their freedom from anxiety through my group coaching, and of course my books enabling them to feel less alone and empowered to live the life they truly deserve.
