Owen Gleiberman Variety As the movie goes on, the feeling it gives you is that for Madonna, art has become all about weighing the dynamics of power. And that has dampened her showbiz instincts. Oct 8, 2021 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter Wherever one draws the line between supporting a group and co-opting it, X captures a night of solid performances and top-notch stagecraft. Just don't show up if you're looking to hear the old stuff. Oct 8, 2021 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle If you ever liked Madonna, this concert film will remind why you weren't wrong. "Madame X" is somewhere between a success and a triumph. Rated: 3/4 Oct 8, 2021 Full Review Jennifer Green Common Sense Media Madonna continues to revel in pushing boundaries and remaining original, and she promises to live to 200 in her wide-ranging new concert documentary. Rated: 3/5 Oct 13, 2021 Full Review B.L. Panther The Spool Here again, as we've stated before, Madonna performs a "feminist" "activism" that's more of a sound-and-light show which relies on distorted, decontextualized, and projected images. Oct 13, 2021 Full Review Johnny Loftus Decider Madame X mixes high-concept, artfully constructed performance sequences with a level of personality and access that a star as image-conscious as Madonna has rarely afforded her viewing audience. Madame X The music... wow. Everything is wow Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Constantine D It is not unusual for critics to diss Madonna's work like their life depends on it, and it's certainly not unusual for them not to have the artistic clarity necessary to comprehend her work in all levels presented. Madame X had some very heavy artistic elements and themes, and while the album itself isn't one of my personal favourites, the visuals take it much higher than the audio standing alone. But then again, that's a well-known quality of Madonna's: elevating the experience of her music through stunning visuals. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Douglas H If you're a fan of Madonna's storied career, you'll unquestionably find this very entertaining. If you're not, some of this might be a little difficult to digest, but it's probably worth a try anyway. There's enough theatrical stagecraft and well performed music to keep just about anyone entertained. The first 45 minutes can feel slightly rough on the edges, with cinematography that at times is almost too fast for its own good, but the concert builds into something rewarding by the end. If nothing else, this is a clear reminder of why Madonna remains the Queen of Pop. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review robson t Where is Madonna? Certainly Madame X is not on the same level. An intimate show but at the same time too robotic. Strange costumes, haunting vocals and boring jokes. At least a few moments are worth it. I'm talking about Frozen, the excerpt from La Isla Bonita and Like a Prayer. This is where the audience vibrates Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Simply wonderful, as always the Queen of Pop reinventing herself and giving us a beautiful show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Madonna knows how to put a show. And the hologram idea was quite fine. Intentions were good in making this show but the focus on social matters, the lack of past hits, too much editing and artificial vocals makes this show a bit restrained. Good entertainment also can spread the message and this doc just makes you feel like taking a nap after so much preaching Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
