Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard This, like the first Hellboy, is del Toro on holiday in Hollywood, having as much fun as he can without totally compromising his considerable powers of invention. Dec 8, 2014 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Hellboy II is fabulously imaginative, visually sumptuous and dramatically complex; what's more, it's very funny and engaging. Rated: 4/5 Dec 8, 2014 Full Review Jonathan Romney Independent (UK) The film's exuberance, and the sense that it's all one big gimmick-packed action toy, give Hellboy II: The Golden Army a refreshing cinematic purity. Dec 8, 2014 Full Review Fico Cangiano CineXpress Podcast Full of imaginative creatures and settings, Del Toro lets loose on this fun sequel that improves what came before. Ron Perlman is perfect as the cocky hero with a heart. Mito G Hellboy comics are are one of the most underrated comics series out there. Might not be comic accurate but still a damn good take on hellboy Ron Perlman was great has hellboy, shame we never got a trilogy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Tag Hellboy II: The Golden Army is an absolute triumph that surpasses all expectations. Guillermo del Toro's visionary direction, coupled with brilliant performances and stunning visuals, creates a cinematic experience that is both awe-inspiring and emotionally resonant. From the opening scene to the final act, Hellboy II captivates viewers with its rich and immersive storytelling. The film delves deeper into the mythology of Hellboy's world, introducing new fantastical creatures and exploring the complexities of the characters' relationships. The narrative is expertly crafted, seamlessly blending action, humor, and heart to keep audiences engaged from start to finish. Ron Perlman once again shines in the role of Hellboy, bringing his trademark charm and wit to the character. His portrayal perfectly captures the conflicted nature of the half-demon hero, balancing his tough exterior with vulnerability and a desire for acceptance. The supporting cast, including Selma Blair as Liz Sherman and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien, deliver exceptional performances that bring depth and authenticity to their respective roles. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Chadwick H Incredible special effects. Great watch. Very entertaining Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Leaburn O Usual superhero fluff but a slight uptick on the first film. The best thing is this superhero's best power is a gun. Nothing too original going on but easy lighthearted entertainment. Watched on SKY Cinema. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/12/24 Full Review Jim H WE WANT NUMBER 3! WE WANT NUMBER 3! WE WANT NUMBER 3! WE WANT NUMBER 3! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/24 Full Review Shaun E Hellboy II The Golden Army might be a live action cartoon, but even taken on that basis, I found it to be weak, unimaginative and filled with more holes than a colander. But I will start by talking about what I found to be good. This was Abe's film - love story and tragedy in the best Shakespearean tradition. I felt that Doug Jones and Anna Walton had good chemistry, even if the basis of their love story was built on flimsy foundations and lacked very much in the way of development. The ending was great and turned around what could have been a complete flop. On that basis, the film gained a tentative thumbs up from me. The CGI was mostly good, although there were a couple of times I thought that it looked terrible, particularly in the lead up to the final scenes. The underlying storyline was fine, but like the first film, there was no sign of any sophistication in the way the story developed. The fact that Prince Nuada left the library scene without the missing piece was the most ridiculous aspect of the whole film. There were some comic moments that worked really well, but much of it did not meet the mark. Manning in this movie was not like Manning in the first movie in that he did not seem to live up to his own character. And although I don't think that Rupert Evans' character in the first movie was great, I felt that his absence here was noticeable. These characters are, in the main, fairly disposable, but that does not mean that everything works as well without all of the pieces. I am glad that I watched the film, bit don't feel that it lived up to the reviews posted by others. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
