I think, like any school, there are always positives and negatives. My school had some really amazing staff members who are super understanding and are great at connecting with their students. In my personal experience, my school has an amazing art and music department. I have been able to greatly expand my creativity and my overall music ability though our amazing leaders and boosters. With many concerts and showcases a year with a variety of different styles and music groups, we are able to show our community our talent and hard work. We also have some cool opportunities in the sciences. With multiple certifications that can be earned as a student, including one to become an EMT, student are given lots of support and guidance in helping them plan for their futures from our hard working staff. There are some negatives, such as the quality of our school food, but overall I feel I am able to thrive in this community.
My school has various AP opportunities compared to many other schools. For example, during my freshman year, I attended Blaine High School. Although there were AP courses there, there were not as many opportunities or as many college resources compared to Forest Lake High School. However, with that being said, Blaine had a much better school culture (ex. playing music during passing time and having a school news report), diversity, and more variations on clubs and sports (cheerleading, BPA, Debate), which is something that I would love to see reflected in my school.
One of the best parts of my high school experience was making lifelong friendships. I met some amazing people who I hope to stay close with over the years. We’ve been through everything together - from studying for exams to attending school events and forming unforgettable memories.
Another positive aspect was being able to explore my interests through various extracurricular activities. I was involved in sports teams(dance), clubs(RISE), and volunteer organizations(NHS) which allowed me to develop new skills and passions.
High school can be a difficult time for many young people, and having more resources and support available for students struggling with mental health issues would make a significant difference.
