Marika Hackman – Violet Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

Violet Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Under violet skies, I watched you give into the wild
Some throbbing howl
Eat me alive
I love your mouth

[Chorus 1]
I’d like to roll around your tongue
Caught like a bicycle spoke

You eat, I’ll grow and grow
Swelling up until you choke

[Verse 2]
With my violet eyes, I'll make you succumb to my mind
And through it all
I’ll keep you blind and close my mouth

[Chorus 2]
I hold you here between my teeth
Slack like an elephant’s trunk
I’ll fight the urge to bite
Or I'll get sticky resin in my gums

[Bridge: Marika Hackman & The Big Moon]
I love your mouth
I love your mouth
I love your mouth
I love your mouth

[Verse 1 & Bridge]
Under violet skies, I watched you give into the wild
Some throbbing howl
Eat me alive
I love your mouth

[Verse 2 & Bridge]
With my violet eyes, I made you succumb to my mind
And through it all
I kept you blind
I love your mouth

[Outro: Chorus 1]
I’d like to roll around your tongue
Caught like a bicycle spoke
You eat, I’ll grow and grow
Swelling up until you choke

What did Marika Hackman say about "Violet"?
Genius Answer

In an interview with The Skinny, Hackman said about this track:

Weirdly, if I look at it now in context of the whole record, it’s one that’s probably more similar to [We Slept at Last] out of the bunch, but at that moment it felt different to me. It just felt a little bit more direct, you know? I didn’t feel like I had to keep pushing away from songwriting norms to do something different; I felt like I had room to do something different within a sphere that already exists. That was actually such a liberating thing to begin to understand.

She told DIY that ‘Violet’ was mainly about sex:

It felt like an open door in my brain,” she comments. Lyrically, it’s a plainly lust-charged song, paving the way for the rest of the album. “Very, very sexy,” she grins. “Maybe it’s because [‘Violet’ is] kind of bridging that gap [between the debut album and the follow-up] but it’s still got loads of metaphors in it. But they’re sexy metaphors!”
