The most cherished novels from England's talented sisters, all in one gorgeously packaged volume

The Brontë family was a literary phenomenon unequalled before or since. Both Charlotte's
Jane Eyre and Emily's Wuthering Heights have won lofty places in the pantheon and stirred the romantic sensibilities of generations of readers. For the first time ever, Penguin Classics unites these two enduring favorites with the lesser known but no less powerful work by their youngest sister, Anne. Drawn from Anne's own experiences as a governess, Agnes Grey offers a compelling view of Victorian chauvinism and materialism. Its inclusion makes The Brontë Sisters a must-have volume for anyone fascinated by this singularly talented family.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

About the Author

Charlotte Bronte lived from 1816 to 1855. Jane Eyre appeared in 1847 and was followed by Shirley (1848) and Vilette (1853). In 1854 Charlotte Bronte married her father's curate, Arthur Bell Nicholls. She died during her pregnancy on March 31, 1855 in Haworth, Yorkshire. The Professor was posthumously published in 1857.

Emily Bronte lived from 1818 to 1848. She wrote one strikingly innovative novel, Wuthering Heights, and was also a gifted and intense poet. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 30.

Anne Brontë, youngest of the Bronte sisters, was born in 1820. She worked as a governess between 1840 and 1845, after which she published Agnes Grey (1847) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) under the pen-name Acton Bell. Anne Brontë died of tuberculosis in 1849.

Anne Brontë (17 January 1820 – 28 May 1849) was an English novelist and poet, the youngest member of the Brontë literary family.

At 19 she left Haworth and worked as a governess between 1839 and 1845. After leaving her teaching position, she fulfilled her literary ambitions. She published a volume of poetry with her sisters and two novels. Agnes Grey, based upon her experiences as a governess, was published in 1847. Her second and last novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which is considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels, appeared in 1848. Like her poems, both her novels were first published under the masculine pen name of Acton Bell. Anne's life was cut short when she died of what is now suspected to be pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 29.

Partly because the re-publication of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was prevented by Charlotte Brontë after Anne's death, she is not as well known as her sisters. However, her novels, like those of her sisters, have become classics of English literature.

These past two days I have reviewed Jane Eyre and Agnes Grey, by Charlotte and Anne Bronte. I just wanted to take a moment to note the wonderful edition that I read them from. This large (but not too large) volume contains Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Agnes Grey. This was definitely a good book for me, containing all three. Since I really enjoyed Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, I wanted to have my own copy of each book, and I was very happy when I discovered this volume from Penguin Classics, also including Agnes Grey, which I had never read before.

Now, about the formatting. The cover is really nice, kind of dark and moody, as befitting the novels enclosed. On the spine is a picture of another woman, and on the back, a different one, all with the black, bare tree over their faces. Presumably, one represents Jane Eyre, another Cathy, and the third Agnes Grey. The font is fairly small, but not miniscule, and the book is pretty easy to hold. I would definitely recommend this edition of all three novels, though not if you like to see the book spines lined up next to one another (which I normally do.)

As a lover of Victorian literature, I appreciate Wuthering Heights, the only novel of Emily's. Her writing is passionate---melodramatic, as was typical of writing of this era, and the characters Heathcliff and Catherine, you know from the start, are tormented lovers body and soul. The violence surprised me, as I'm quite sure it must've for readers of the time. I adore the gothic elements throughout...and the moors could be said to be a major character, making me long to roam the windswept heather-and-furze moors...quite romantic! As for Charlotte's Jane Eyre, well, it is simply brilliant. Much more complex and well written. It is my favorite novel of all time, has been for years. I haven't yet read Anne's Agnes Gray...but that's next! I'm interested to explore the writing style of this least well-known Bronte...

Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are two of my favorite books, so based on that and the beautiful cover art, I purchased this volume. I can now say that Agnes Grey is also one of my favorite books. All of the Bronte sisters together in on book with lovely cover art, what more could a girl ask for. Penquin Classics never disappoints. This book and I spend many a lovely rainy afternoon together , sitting in a comfy chair with a cup of tea. BUY IT! The only thing I will add is that this is not a large print book, so if that is an issue, this may not be for you.

The writing was wonderful even if the story was simple and at times predictable

I was looking for an edition of Jane Eyre and came across this book. I already had the Jane Austen set by the same publisher. I am very pleased by both and will look for more from this publisher.

It's a bit thinner than I expected it to be, but that's comparing it to the larger B&N collectible edition novels I own. Although I bought it used it was still in the plastic so I was thrilled. I won't unwrap it until I'm ready to read it but the cover and edges of the page are in great condition. I bought it because I love the story of Jane Eyre and am addicted to these collectible covers, so I figured I might as well get two extra stories as well.

The stories are classics so there's plenty of commentary available online about each of them. My review is about the beautifully ornate gold leaf detail on this volume's cover and pages. This is the most beautiful book I own! It's the perfect cover for such treasured stories.

I love Jane eyre and Agnes grey. Not a huge fan of wuthering heights.
It’s a beautiful looking book. It has a dainty design on the cover and gold edging on the pages.
