Weather in Toronto: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

Knowing a bit about Toronto weather conditions can go a long way when it comes to helping you make better decisions about packing and possibly save you from having to buy necessities you hadn't anticipated—especially when you haven't prepared properly for the cold or other weather patterns that Toronto may experience during your visit.

Toronto has four distinct seasons: summer, fall, winter, and spring, much like other North American cities like Montreal, Chicago, or New York City. In general, Toronto's climate is slightly more moderate than Montreal and similar to (but colder) than New York City.

Most visitors to Toronto tend to underestimate how cold and snowy the winters are and how hot and humid the summers can often be. Even in fall and spring, visitors have a tendency to not pack sufficiently for cool evenings. When that sun disappears, things can get chilly. Summer

Toronto summers are hot and humid. Locals enjoy visiting the city’s many beaches and parks, as well as taking day trips to the nearby Toronto Islands. There are also numerous events and festivals to enjoy in Toronto throughout the city covering everything from food and music, to arts and culture. Toronto is also home to many public outdoor pools perfect for cooling off on a hot day. The end of summer is also when the Canadian National Exhibition rolls into town with rides, games, and lots of great food.

In terms of temperature, the effect of Lake Ontario cools the city a bit, but also brings the humidity. Temperatures hover in the 80s and sometimes 90s. Expect rain about 8 to 12 days a month in July or August. 

What to pack: Be sure to pack shorts, t-shirts, sandals, sunglasses, a swimsuit if you plan to do any swimming, sunscreen, a light jacket for evening and an umbrella.

Fall

Temperatures rarely dip below zero in the fall, but you'll still want to bring a warm jacket. September to November in Toronto are wild-card months in that early fall weather can be hot and sunny, and later in the season can see snow storms or icy conditions. Cool fall weather means gorgeous foliage, and Toronto is a prime spot for viewing the changing leaves. Hiking within the city and in surrounding parks is a popular fall activity. October still sees many events and festivals taking place including the popular all-night festival Nuit Blanche and in November, the Royal Winter Fair.

What to pack: Bring clothing that can be layered as temperatures can be unpredictable. An umbrella is also a good idea.

Winter

Toronto weather in winter is, in fact, milder than most Canadian cities, yet still cold and snowy. The cold can be especially biting because of the wind-chill factor. Most snowfall occurs from December through March, with an annual average around 40 inches. Snowstorms can be sudden and intense and affect traffic and air travel. Sidewalks can get quite icy during the winter, so proper footwear is recommended, which means boots with proper non-slip soles. In terms of activities, locals enjoy skating on many of the city’s rinks and taking part in seasonal events such as the Toronto Christmas Market.

What to pack: Pack warm clothing for winter in Toronto, as well as waterproof clothing and accessories like hat, mitts, scarf, sunglasses (the glare from snow can be intense), and an umbrella. If you are planning on spending any recreational time in the snow, you will need snow pants.

Spring

Toronto's spring is unpredictable and may see drastic swings in temperature. A sudden snowstorm in April is not unheard of, but a thunderstorm is more common. Temperatures can even get into the 80s F. Visitors can expect at least some rain about 11 days out of 30 in April. May sees the city’s many patios begin to open, and locals love eating and drinking outdoors any chance they get.

What to pack: From the end of March to mid-June, visitors should pack a variety of clothes—layering is always best—as are waterproof jackets and shoes and an umbrella.
