Biography

  • Formed in Van Nuys, Greater Los Angeles, USA, Toto are a critically acclaimed, six piece rock band known for their eclectic blend of influences to create a unique style of music.

Toto started life in 1977, when a group of session musicians decided to form their own band to play original music of their own. The lineup has changed over the years but currently the band features Steve Lukather on guitar and vocals, Joseph Williams as lead vocalist, David Paich on keyboards and vocals, Steve Porcaro on keyboards, Keith Carlock on drums and bass player David Hungate replacing Mike Porcaro due to illness.

Toto's anthemic arena rock has been pleasing fans worldwide for over three decades, with the band releasing a total of 17 albums and selling over 35 million records. Their 1982 album "Toto IV" became their most commercially successful release, featuring the top five hits "Hold The Line," "Rosanna" and perhaps their best known song "Africa." The main keyboard riff of "Africa" is instantly recognisable and is a classic song of the 80s. What makes Toto's music so successful is their wide-ranging influences, incorporating world rhythms, progressive rock, soul and jazz into their melting pot. "Toto IV" earned the band seven Grammy Awards, which included Record of the Year for "Rosanna," as well as Album of the Year and Producer of the Year for the record.

Toto continued to have a prolific output yet did not achieve the same levee of success as with "Toto IV." In 2002, to celebrate their 25th anniversary, the band released "Through the Looking Glass", an album of covers that was a tribute to the music that influenced the band, featuring covers of songs by Bob Marley, Steely Dan and George Harrison. The band struggled with lineup changes throughout the later stage of their career. In 2008, following David Paich's retirement and Mike Porcaro's illness, Steve Lukather called an end to Toto, citing the loss of many of the original members as reasons for this. But in 2010, in order to raise money to support Porcaro through his medical costs, the band reunited for several further tours and also talk of a new album in the works.

Toto were one of the most successful bands of the 80s and their music continues to define the sound of the decade. In 2009, the band were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009, cementing their reputation.

Live reviews

  • Toto

Toto are masters at blending diverse genres together to create a sound that is all of their own. They have combined the diverse genres of soul, funk, pop, rock, jazz, and progressive rock into their sound that allows them to produce large atmospheric sounds that will grab the audience’s attention. Toto can hit you in the face with a fierce hard rock guitar riff and then they can send you into a trance of other worldly sounds with the shimmering music of the synthesizers that the band produces. Their bass player has the ability to get deep warm tones from his bass guitar that drives the rhythm of most of the songs, and the piano player will also play organ effects on his synthesizers to get a real meaty and funky sound to enhance the music. Toto tours with many band members that play different instruments, but they are all well versed at playing in time to create a richly ornate quality to their music. Toto’s band consists of background singers that often perform call and response melodies with the lead singer to produce a soulful sound to their music. The band plays a diverse setlist when touring that includes most of their hits. They will play the hard-rock tune “Hold the Line” that will get the audience rocking out to the music, and then they will play the more foreign, ethereal sounding tune “Africa” that has lush synth sounds that will make you think that you are in the safari’s of Africa. The band has been a commercial and critical success already having been inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum as well as having won numerous Grammy Awards.

While at a Toto concert you will be in awe of the diverse performance styles that the band conveys. Each member is a master on their instrument and to see them play with such precision together, creating such amazing sounds is an inspirational sensation.

  • Toto, the American rock six-piece formed almost forty years ago yet continue to wow crowds with their abilities to merge numerous genres into slick sounding alt-pop. Known to incorporate pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock and jazz into their music, the set up is notably detailed with a whole variety of session musicians drafted in to support the main band.

As the opening notes of 'Child's Anthem' fill the room, the crowd cheers as the veteran act takes it place. They did not achieve as greater commercial success in the UK as in their homeland yet the British audiences are receptive to their musicianship and the handful of tracks that did make the chart such as 'Rosanna' and 'Stop Loving You' receive big cheers from the crowds.

A brilliant cover of Michael Jackson's 'Human Nature' gets the crowd enthusiastically clapping and cheering along. Followed up by their biggest international hit 'Africa' of course receives huge bellows and cheers from the whole room. Enthusiasm appears to be in this band's American blood and as they wrap up with 'Home of The Brave' they seem incredibly happy with the show.

  • I have seen a lot of amazing musical groups over the years. Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Journey, Rush, Allan Holdsworth, Maynard Ferguson and so many others, but watching and listening to TOTO on their 35th year anniversary was over the top. I remember watching them in 1984 with a very rare meet and greet with Jeff Porcaro and thought wow these guys are good. Then over the years with I have seen them a dozen times or so and they just get better and better. Simon is so tight with his groves, both David and Steve P. nailing the keyboard parts is just awesome. Steve L. just brings it on every show but my wife and I were amazed at Joseph Williams. Damn that guy can sing! Not to mention that Amy Keys added to the whole experience. However, we will never forget meeting and speaking with each one of these amazing men. Even though I am a professional it was hard to come face to face with those who truly shaped the American music scene. It was just a great experience and true honor. We can hardly wait for their next album and performances.

  • I saw them in Dublin 5th April and paid for the VIP-experience as well. The guys weren`t in the best form, but it was amazing seeing them doing their soundcheck, Joseph Williams was chatting to the more curious fans - we were just standing there mesmerized..We got our photos taken with the band, our music sheet signed, got a keyring then we got escorted to the bar, and got back in before the rest of the crowd was let in, so in a way we all paid for having a spot in the front rows too..

They were brilliant! This was the end of the tour, so at some point you could see they`re only human and are tired, but they offered an exceptional music experience to us all! I can`t remember any other band playing this good live; yes, they did get older of course, but they are still masters of their instruments and the new band members fit in perfectly with them!

I could go on praising them, but I won`t.

They were amazing and that is that!!!

  • This was an absolutely AWESOME show by TOTO! In 40 years TOTO has only aged visibly; however, TOTO's music has evolved into the 21st century! TOTO not only entertained the audience at THE WARNER THEATRE with Its old hits and new compositions, TOTO wowed the audience with lead guitar solos that would have granted a nod from Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, and from the great Jimmy Hendrix, if he were still with Us. Also, TOTO made certain to include the audience of THE WARNER THEATRE in Its music performace by ordering Us on Our feet to sing & dance! In addition, TOTO gave Us a music history lesson by telling the audience who wrote the music score for the 1970's hit movie, JAWS and who wrote one of Michael Jackson's hit songs! Finally, a new member of TOTO, Xavier, a PRINCE rollover, wowed the audience with a classical music solo ... . Hopefully TOTO will keep Us entertained, in the future, with "50 Trips Around The Sun"!

  • I attended ToTo's "40 Trips Around The Sun" concert on Monday and was absolutely blown away by the amazing talent of this band. The band played a mix of songs, that they don't usually perform in concert, which included songs from their earlier work, as well as some fan favorites. The guys were on fire, full of energy and always entertaining the audience with their humor and enthusiasm. Loved it when the audience was encouraged to join in on some of the old favorites and when band members Steve Lukather, Joe Williams and Steve Porcaro sat down and reminisced about how certain songs came about and the stories behind their 40 plus year friendships.I would highly recommend seeing this fabulous band and I'm already looking forward to seeing them again!

  • This show was for true TOTO fans, many of whom have followed the band, as I have, since 1978 and were therefore made to feel part of the Forty Tours Around The Sun. Not only did the band play their most famous hits, they also did a semi-acoustic set in interview style to talk about how everything had started and played rarities from their 40 year history. I have seen TOTO many times but, with the addition of sax, harmonica and a new bassist/backing vocalist of world class, they sounded new and fresh! Like everyone else in the audience, my friend and I sang all the words and harmonies for every song! Simply the best TOTO show ever !!

  • Unfortunately the Scandinavian Congress Center in Århus, Denmark, did not give any justice for the amazing TOTO.

We stood on the floor during the whole concert and couldn't sene any of TOTO's members at all.

The sound dit NOT lave any space for the vokalists.. The bass-Sound was way too loud. I am very disappointed by the congresscenter, Where the concert took place..

Next time TOTO comes to Denmark we will look very much forward to se you amazing guys in Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Jutland, Denmark.

In Jyske Bank Boxen the sound is much, much better and the artists can be seen from any of the seats..

  • The premises of Hamburg's 'Mehr! Theater am Grossmarkt' were not built with an emphasis on music performances. A pity.

Toto did a good job to defend their reputation to be one of the world's most precise team play bands, but I can't stand the short versions of their greatest hits just in order to perform as many hits as possible in the given time frame. The latest two studio albums 'Falling in Between' and 'Toto XIV' were underrepresented although these albums are much more mature and musically challenging than the early ones.

  • TOTO is one of my favorites. They are pro-fessional musicians and I fell in love with their music back in the 80's. Saw them here in Hawaii when Santana played. My favorite song is "Africa". But I love all their songs, they nail the chords with perfection. I love David Paich, he is supercalafrajalisticexpealadocious! I can't wait to see them perform here in Hawaii again. It's been a long 12 years ago. I rip waves whiles listening to their songs in my head surfing. Mahalo for letting me share my heart out to TOTO!
