This Video Show DVD traces the band's history during the height of their popularity with Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks as the main force behind their success. Peter Gabriel appears in a 1999 version of "The Carpet Crawlers." The DVD features classic MTV staples like "Land of Confusion," "Invisible Touch," and "I Can't Dance." Now visually digitally remastered, this is the first time all of the Genesis promotional videos have become available on DVD. In addition, rare BBC footage of "Paperlate" is included. Once the early '80s ushered in the video age in earnest, few artists embraced the medium as willingly, or effectively, as Genesis. In fact, Genesis - The Video Show, a collection of 32 of the veteran British group's videos, includes more than a few items that pre-date MTV by several years, making this the comprehensive record of Genesis' post-Peter Gabriel era. There are all kinds of videos here, both black & white and color, somber ("No Son of Mine") and silly ("I Can't Dance"), topical ("Tell Me Why") and romantic, some with storylines and many that are simulated (i.e., lip-synced) performances, from both onstage and elsewhere. Song-wise, the best tend to be the hits, like "Misunderstanding," "Paperlate" (taken from England's "Top of the Pops" TV show), "That's All," and "Invisible Touch" (one of no less than six tracks taken from the 1986 album of the same name), although the '70s material, particularly from A Trick of the Tail (when the group was a foursome, with guitarist Steve Hackett), is also strong. On the other hand, the lesser-known tunes yield some of the better videos, including "Land of Confusion" (with its bizarre puppet versions of Genesis members Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks, not to mention Ronald and Nancy Reagan) and others ("Illegal Alien," "Jesus He Knows Me") that give Collins, a pretty fair actor, an opportunity for some full-on mugging. Granted, there isn't a lot of ground broken here; for the most part, Genesis has been a solid, journeyman band, and Genesis - The Video Show reflects that. But the 5.1 Surround Sound is excellent, there are full writing and production credits for every song and video, the packaging is classy… founding member Gabriel even turns up on a 1999 version of "The Carpet Crawlers," perhaps the most imaginative video of the bunch. If you're a Genesis fan, this has to be the motherlode. --Sam Graham

This is a review for "Genesis: The Video Show" DVD.

The title of "The Video Show" is putting it mildly. Genesis has always been a top quality band that worked for the sound quality and most inventive videos to match their music. This is a collection of 32 Genesis big hits. Don't bother with any other Genesis video collection. This is the only one you need. Every Genesis hit is here, remastered and remixed with a phenomenal 5.1 surround mix that will impress the audiophile.

The videos are stunningly clear and vivid. No grain or video noise.

But the soundtrack is the big star of this collection. Each audio track has obviously been remixed from original multi track masters that were remastered. The audio is offered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 Surround. Of course I always prefer the DTS 5.1 mode for the wider dynamic range and less compression than Dolby audio.

Every video takes big advantage of the 5.1 tracks. Very noticeable 5 channel separation with superb frequency response and dynamic range. This collection will impress even the picky Audiophile.

At the start of each video is a single frame with the title of the next video. If you click ENTER on your remote while the frame is up, it takes you to a page that shows the details of the title such as writers, producer, director, singer....etc... Just hit ENTER again at any time to go direct to the video.

All 32 videos are the originals as seen on MTV and VH1 back in the stone age when they still played music videos. Back when Phil Collins was a fresh new voice on the charts. There are a couple of videos near the end after Phil Collins left the band to go solo. The last video of the set is "The Carpet Crawlers 1999 with Peter Gabriel. He looks young.

If you are a Genesis fan, this is the only collection you need. If you are not a fan, these videos will make you one. Worth every dollar.

These great Genesis songs have never sounded better than on the surround sound setting of this DVD. They did a fantastic job of remastering these songs and making them sound great. This treatment makes other music video DVDs I own sound tinny by comparison. So 5 stars for the most important aspect of a music video collection -- the sound quality.

While this DVD is absolutely worth owning for any Genesis fan, there are some flaws:

-The video quality does not match the sound quality. Many of the videos appear fuzzy and grainy. They could have done a better job of cleaning up and restoring them.

-I couldn't pause, move forward, or rewind. I've never owned a DVD where these functions were disabled. Strange.

-There are no Peter Gabriel-era tunes except a 1999 cover of "Carpet Crawlers" which wasn't very good. Surely they could have found some vintage concert footage or something to include, because Genesis had some of its most creative, if less well-known and more offbeat, work before Collins took over singing duties. The post-Collins videos appeared high-budget, but somehow the grungy and lyrically lame "Congo" doesn't sound like Genesis to me. I would have gladly traded that for something from their 70s work.

-The non-chronological video sequence seemed arbitrary.

Genesis - The Video Show is a fine package indeed. The "real" videos (big budget, storyboard, name director etc.) from the 80's and 90's are for the most part fun and engaging, and it's nice to have them all collected together in one place. They include everything released by the band during the MTV era, including the memorable Spitting Image inspired puppet video for Land of Confusion, which, on reflection, is every bit as entertaining, but quite a bit more politically charged, than I remembered as an eighteen year old back in '86. There are other highlights too, like the inclusion of the mimed performance of Paperlate on the British TV show Top of the Pops, and the '99 reunion with Peter Gabriel on a new rendition of The Carpet Crawlers. For many Genesis fans though, myself included, the stars of this DVD will prove to be the promo videos for some of the songs from A Trick of the Tail, And Then There Were Three, and Duke. Before the arrival of MTV, and the aforementioned "real" music videos, bands would often film promos on stage, simulating a live in-concert performance, and sometimes cut other imagery and scenes in with it. And these are what make this DVD so special - and so tantalizing! In watching the band on-stage, with all the correct instruments, stage set, lights and so on, playing such fabulous music as Ripples, Follow You Follow Me, and Turn It On Again, it only takes a small step in the mind to imagine watching real concert footage from the period - which, after all, is the stuff most visibly absent from the Genesis catalog, and that which most life-long Genesis fans would love to see released more than anything else. Oh, well. Until the band release a live video retrospective, along the lines of the fantastic Genesis Archive CD box sets of a few years back, Genesis - The Video Show, will suffice. It is a superb collection that you will want to play over and again...while dreaming of the day that Gabriel and Collins era 70's concert footage gets the same, stunning, DVD treatment.

The Video Show is perfect in that it is a completely comprehensive collection of every music video Genesis, in all its guises, ever released. There's very little point complaining about the lack of Gabriel. They never made music videos with him. Also, complaining that there is "too much new stuff" is just weird. You're upset because they gave you too much for your money?

I'm not gonna describe every video so I'll just make a few points about the DVD as a whole. The picture and sound quality is great so each video can be enjoyed exactly as Genesis originaly intended (complete with cringeworthy acting and special-effects in "a trick of the tail").

I'm not sure why but the songs are all arranged in reverse chronological order apart from the "Calling All Stations" stuff which comes at the end. All of the videos (yes even Calling All Stations era) are well worth watching for the sheer entertainment and history behind each one.

For me, the jewel in the crown of this DVD is that Peter Gabriel does make an appearance. Well, his voice does. The very last video is "Carpet Crawlers 1999". Rerecorded by the band in 1999 with all sortsa modern sounding stuff. Anyhow, it's a brilliant reworking of the song with a very moving video with little snapshots of old Geneses performances projected onto naked people. What's not to enjoy?

Easy to stick on in the background and you can even create a playlist of the videos you want to watch. I personally have spent many hours watching this dvd. It really is worth owning for fans of any era. I also think it's very good value for money.

A TRICK OF THE TAIL".
