Vidya Balan says it was ‘lust at first sight’ with husband Siddharth Roy Kapur, admits she wanted to ‘sensationalise’ their relationship initially

Actor Vidya Balan doesn’t often speak about her life with husband, producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, but in a recent interview, she opened up about how they first met, and what she was going through at that time. Vidya had previously said that Karan Johar had played Cupid in their relationship, but when she first met Siddharth, she was at a stage in life where she had almost given up on finding love.

In an appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Vidya said that she never saw herself as somebody who could get married. And this feeling cemented itself after she had a couple of unpleasant relationships. She said, “Actually, I’ve never wanted to be married, I have to be honest with you. I never saw myself as someone who could get married. I wanted to be with someone, but I never saw myself as getting married. But at a certain age, Parineeta happened when I was 26, and by 30 I’d seen a lot of success, and I wanted to share it with someone. I dated a few people but it didn’t quite work out. But I was feeling lonely. At the end of the day, you want to share your triumphs and disasters with someone outside of their family… I dated a few people, and it didn’t turn out well. It actually put me off, and I decided, you know what, forget it.”

Vidya admitted that she got cheated on, and that it made her feel even more worthless, but she said that this was an important experience, because it separated the ‘wheat’ from the ‘chaff’. She said that she doesn’t mean to disparage her past partners, but after being disappointed in love, she decided that she wouldn’t look for anything serious, and just have fun.

When she met Siddharth Roy Kapur, whom she described as the most ‘good-looking man’ she has met, she said that it was ‘lust at first sight’. But over time, she began admiring how secure he was as a person, ‘more secure than most men’ she had met. Vidya added that Siddharth is ‘very private, but also very authentic’, and revealed that it was definitely Siddharth who ‘made the first move’. But she admitted that she wasn’t quite like that in the early days of their marriage. “I was also playing to the gallery when I said things about him, I wanted to sensationalise things…” she said.

Vidya and Siddharth have been together for 13 years. They got married in 2012, after dating for some time in private.
