Biography

  • Hailing from Nova Scotia, Canada, The Trews are a four-piece hard rock band who have forged a successful career lasting over a decade, releasing five studio albums in that time.

In their home country of Canada, The Trews have consistently released top ten-charting albums, also gaining several top ten singles in the Canadian Rock charts. With two Gold-certified records to their name, The Trews are one of the most successful Canadian hard rock bands. The band take influence from classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers Band, as well as more contemporary acts like Pearl Jam and U2.

The band formed in high school in 1997, featuring brothers Colin MacDonald (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) and John-Angus MacDonald (lead guitar/backing vocals), cousin Sean Dalton (drums) and friend Jack Syperek (bass). In 2002, they decided upon the name, The Trews, before then entering and winning southern Ontario’s 97.7 HTZ-FM’s annual talent contest. This success garnered the attention of Big Sugar singer, Gordon Johnson, who then offered to record and produce their self-titled debut EP.

Moving to Sony Music Canada, The Trews produced their debut album, “House of Ill Fame,” which found the band a significant audience, achieving Gold certification. The Trews then embarked on extensive tours, playing over 400 shows in the following years before returning to the studio. Their second record, “Den of Thieves” followed in 2005, also being certified Gold.

Four more albums followed, “No Time For Later” (2008), “Friends & Total Strangers” (2009), “Hope & Ruin” (2011) and their self-titled sixth album in 2014, all charting in the top ten of the Canadian charts. The band have toured internationally, supporting the likes of the Rolling Stones, KISS, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant and Guns ’N’ Roses.

Live reviews

  • The Trews

This was Lucky #13 in regards to the number of times I have seen the band from Nova Scotia, Canada, The Trews. And just like fine wine, or watching reruns of "Seinfeld", over time, they just keep getting better and better.

The location, 1st Ward at The Chop Shop in Chicago was my first time there, tho I had seen the band before around the corner at Double Door years earlier. The place is beautiful. It does have, and rightfully so, a butcher shop in the front and restaurant seating upstairs. The theater is located in the back behind a nice long bar, and it has fantastic acoustics.

Of course The Trews were their usual fantastic selves, playing for nearly 90 minutes and entertained the small crowd through a 17 song setlist. Colin MacDonald continues to show why he's a highly regarded lead vocalist and writer, as he makes storytelling seem effortless. Brother John-Angus MacDonald often looks like a caged bear trying to get out as he swings between sweet sounds and shredding on his guitar with quick strokes. Jack Syperek, as always, holds the fort down with his deep pounding bass, and Gavin MacGuire looks as if he could play the drums for any band, any style, at anytime.

Go see The Trews if and when you can. Even if you're not a fan of original rock tunes, you will appreciate the stories their songs tell and the musicianship.

Openers 'Uniform 61' were not really my type of music, they seemed more 'Rock-a-billy' than anything else, but they certainly did have some fans in the crowd who enjoyed their 45 minute set. The second band, 'Young Cub' was a very talented group of young guys (late 20's) who did play some great rock music.

Top to bottom, I give the entire night a strong A+. Location, beverages, dinner and obviously the show was spectacular.

  • After fifteen years together, it’s clear that The Trews really know how to make a rock hit. These are guys who took their time on their journey, not releasing their first single until 2002 despite playing together since 1997. This slow start is reflected in their music: this band knows their genre inside and out, and are totally at one with their sound. More than this, the guys are also totally at one with each other, which makes seeing these friends perform live a real pleasure. This band is always really excited to share their new material – and audiences at their gigs are always pumped to hear it – but the band isn’t afraid to include firm favourites such as What’s Fair Is Fair, Hold Me in Your Arms and Not Ready to Go in their sets. Hearing everyone sing along to these with the band is always so much fun, and you can tell all the guys of The Trews love it too. I don’t expect this band to slow down any time soon, and, to be honest, I wouldn’t want them to. Their following is strong for a reason: these guys are all about the music. If you like hard rock and you’ve enjoyed their music, you have to see them live. Every performance they have, they rock out like it’s their last.

  • The Trews performance was fantastic! Their live music sounds just as great as their studio recordings. They changed a few songs in the live performance to go along with the moment and they took requests from the fans. They have a personable and fun style that shines through in their music, even songs about heartache will have you dancing.

They have a growing following here in the United States, with their talent and the fun performance they give, they are sure to gain in popularity here as people discover this hidden gem. I would love to see The Trews in their native Canada where they have earned multiple awards and enjoy a loyal following. They are a lively group and do not disappoint.

Although the venue they played here was small, never underestimate the great time to be had at such an intimate show. The Trews interaction with fans makes you feel as if you are hanging out with close friends.

    They're definitely keepers.

  • The Trews are the most underrated rock band to date, but the US is finding out slow and steady. They kill it every night so this show is no different. Lush harmonies, organic energy and huge choruses. what could be better?
