I met Michael Rooker once and I told him how much I loved his performance in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. He jokingly called me a “sick fuck”. True story.
Chicago Neo-Realism at its most bleak and uncompromising. McNaughton made the most brutal horror film of the 80’s and barely shows a thing compared to most splatter films of the day. Rooker and Towles are ferocious.
I never watched this when I was younger during the “video store days” because honestly the VHS art did nothing to entice me. “He’s not Freddy, he’s not Jason...He’s real.” I mean, that’s a pretty eye rolly tagline. But then I started hearing about what a great movie it was and I just still never got around to it.
Well, I finally watched this with Joe Bob and it really is a borderline masterpiece, but with the intro JB gave it, I was really hoping for a shocking, appalling, and thoroughly disturbing experience and I guess I truly am completely desensitized to movies because I just didn’t get that. Henry is a beast, the city is his jungle and we are his prey! Witnessing Henry (Michael Rooker) in predator mode is like watching a BBC wildlife show featuring a Cheetah taking down a massive Wildebeest! The brutality of it is gut churning but it is also a real thing of beauty for it showcases the primal nature of man and his propensity to be born killers with the skillset and speed required to overpower its prey!
The film itself was shot on 16mm, the raw, dingy, gritty appearance gave it a sense of realism! Unfortunately the low budget hinders what could have been a great film by way of horrendous dialogue and highly questionable acting by fellow no name…
The central concept on Henry might be "the serial killer movie as docudrama", but the real radical movie by McNaughton is that despite that he never abandons exploitation. The strip down narrative, lack of psychology and heavy amount of naturalistic detail become tools of the horror movie within, they are a engine that contributes to Henry as a chilling thrilling experience. That is what makes it so disturbing. It is in a way a movie about the idea of movie realism and its effects, doing for movie "realism" a desconstruction not unlike what David Holzman's Diary does for the direct cinema diary. An utterly discomforting journey into the mind of a sadist, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is exactly what its subtitle suggests. Brutal, disturbing & absolutely uncompromising with its content, Henry is unsettling from the very first frame but what really separates it from other similar examples is its stringent focus on telling the story from the killer's perspective.

A grimy serial killer flick from the guy who would go on to direct Wild Things. The performances by Rooker and Towles were chilling. There were even moments where Towles outnastied Rooker, and that is really saying something. The fact that this was based on a real-life story made it all the more icky.
I had a great time watching this with Michelle and Sophie.
