If you’re looking for a life insurance policy in your later years, Transamerica has policies that can be purchased up to the age of 85 and its Final Expense policy doesn’t require a medical exam. Its Trendsetter Super Series can also be converted to a permanent life insurance policy without an additional medical exam or fees. This could be a good option if you want a life insurance policy now but aren’t sure if you want a permanent life insurance policy and the higher fees that typically accompany a whole or universal policy.
Policies: Transamerica offers two term life plans, the Trendsetter Super Series and the Trendsetter LB. There are also four permanent life insurance policies, two whole and two universal. The two whole insurance policies are the Individual Whole Life Insurance plan and the Final Expense Life Insurance policy. The universal plans are the Transamerica Financial Foundation IUL and Financial Choice IUL, which are indexed universal life policies.
Coverage Limits: Coverage for Transamerica’s term life plans starts at $25,000, with the Trendsetter LB policy going up to $2 million in coverage and the Trendsetter Super policy providing coverage upward of $10 million. Its Final Expense whole policy provides death benefits ranging from $1,000 to $50,000. The Financial Foundation IUL policy provides death benefits starting at $25,000 to over $500,000. The Financial Choice IUL policy has a minimum death benefit of $250,000.
Coverage Restrictions: There are some age-based limitations for applicants. For example, its Financial Foundation IUL policy has an issue age limit of 85 years old in most states, but 75 in Florida. The Final Expense policy can be issued to applicants up to 85 years old, depending on the state you live in and the type of Final Expense policy you apply for.
Transamerica offers a wide variety of plans, and you can choose from both term, whole life, and universal policies. Most plan types will require working with an agent or representative, as online quote and application processes are not available. Coverage limits are also very flexible, but there are age restrictions to be aware of.
As with all life insurance companies, Transamerica uses a number of factors to determine your risk value and life insurance costs. These include your age, where you live, health history, type of coverage, and coverage amount. Because it’s not permanent coverage and doesn’t build cash value, term insurance tends to cost less than permanent life insurance such as whole or universal life insurance.
For the prices listed, we looked at sample rates for a non-smoker purchasing a 20-year term policy with $1 million in coverage. The policyholder is rated for Transamerica’s Standard Risk class, which is average health. As you can see, the rates increase with the policyholder’s age.
Any rates listed are for illustrative purposes only. You should contact the insurance company or insurance agent directly for applicable quotes.
You can get an estimate for Transamerica’s insurance costs using its online coverage estimator, which weighs factors such as marital status, household income, dependents, mortgage or other debts, retirement plans, and desired level of investment risk. For information on life insurance costs visit our guide to life insurance quotes.
Transamerica does not offer bundling or multipolicy discounts. For more information on inexpensive life insurance options visit our guide to the cheapest life insurance companies.

Transamerica has two term life policies, the Trendsetter Super Series and the Trendsetter LB. The main difference between the two is that the Trendsetter Super Series has $10 million and up in coverage limits, while the Trendsetter LB goes up to $2 million.
For the Trendsetter Super Series, you can get online quotes and applications with this plan. In fact, it’s the only life insurance plan through Transamerica that does offer these online options. For qualified applicants seeking a policy of less than $2 million, a medical exam may not be necessary. Coverage limits run from $25,000 to over $10 million. There are a variety of term lengths to choose from 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30-year terms. Age restrictions run from 18 to 80. The plan has a guaranteed level premium.
The Trendsetter LB has coverage limits that start at $25,000 and run up to $2 million. It also has a variety of term lengths to choose from 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30-year terms. It has a living benefits option and does provide an option for accelerated death benefits. There is a guaranteed level premium.
Transamerica has two whole life plans. One is called the Individual Whole Life Insurance plan and it offers a tax-free death benefit, a tax-deferred cash value that can be accessed during the insurer’s lifetime, and a guaranteed level premium.
There are also riders to customize the policy such as accelerated death benefits, disability waiver of premium, guaranteed insurability, accidental death benefit, children’s benefit, and a term rider.
The Final Expense whole life policy has coverage amounts ranging from $1,000 to $50,000. This plan has fewer available riders than the Individual Whole Life policy, but it still has some like the accelerated death benefit, accidental death benefit, and the children’s and grandchildren’s death benefit.
Transamerica has two universal life insurance policies, which are both indexed universal policies. The Transamerica Financial Foundation IUL coverage limits come in four bands that range from $25,000 to over $500,000. Transamerica issues policies to applicants up to the age of 85, except in Florida where it issues this policy up to the age of 75. The Financial Choice IUL policy option has death benefits starting at $250,000.
The plans have a variety of riders:
Not all riders are available for both policies.
The plan also has death benefit protection and a flexible premium. If the policy holds enough of a cash value, you can adjust your premiums up and down, skip, or even stop paying premiums. There is also a guaranteed minimum interest rate. It has the potential to accumulate a cash value via your premium payments and interest.
Transamerica does not offer its life insurance policies online, so to purchase one you will need to contact a licensed agent. You can find a Transamerica agent near you by searching the company's agent locator with your ZIP code and the type of insurance product you are interested in.
While policies from Transamerica cannot be purchased online, Transamerica documents are generally available electronically, although availability may vary by product.

Both Transamerica and Mutual of Omaha offer term, whole, and universal life insurance policies, but there are some differences. For instance, Transamerica offers term policies for terms of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years, with benefit amounts starting at $25,000. Mutual of Omaha term policies do not offer a 25-year term, and benefit amounts for all term policies start at $100,000. Mutual of Omaha offers three whole life policies, two with applicant age limits of between 45 and 85 and the third meant for children.
In addition, no Transamerica policies can be purchased online. Instead, you have to contact a licensed agent. With Mutual of Omaha, you can get an online quote for term insurance, and you can get a quote and apply online for a whole life policy. You will need to talk to an agent to purchase universal life policies.
