In this revised edition of his classic work―the first modern book on anxiety following Freud and Kierkegaard―psychologist Rollo May brings order and lucidity to the subject of anxiety.

Rollo May challenges the idea that "mental health is living without anxiety," believing it is essential to being human. He explores how it can relieve boredom, sharpen sensibilities, and produce the tension necessary to preserve human existence. May sees a link extending from anxiety to intelligence, creativity, and originality, and guides the reader away from destructive ways to positive ways of dealing with anxiety. He convincingly proposes that anxiety can impel personal change, as it is only by confronting and coping with it that self-realization can occur.

A classic - though old, this book still cuts to the core of how we confront or fail to confront anxiety in our lives. I write this review in 2017.

Anxiety is a fear of nothing in particular. In health, anxiety converts into fear and drives us to deal with objective threats to survival or identity. In neurosis, the contradiction between expectations of reality and what is actually the case can't be faced directly and anxiety is expressed in symptoms that are only indirectly related to the source of the anxiety.

The evidence is less compelling than experimentalists would desire, mainly consisting of schematic case studies.

I found value in that I could use what May provides to better understand my own life. I would thus classify this book as philosophy or theory of self-help than as science. The last three chapters drew a labored beginning to an insightful close

I liked the historical perspective within the text. I was impressed by the case examples as well. I only wished I had read it sooner.

Rollo May did an interview for TV ("Thinking Allowed" with Jeffrey Mishlove) where he expressed criticisms of the new age woo, and pointing out the value of anxiety. This can be found on YouTube. It makes me cry because its true and I wish I had understood this much sooner in life. I bought this book because I was looking for a greater elaboration on those criticisms but didn't find that. I found it a pretty dry read, actually. I may give him another chance with Love and Will.

Ordered the book and it arrived almost immediately. I find the content sadly dated somehow.
The book was written in the 70's. I need to spend more time with the book though. I suspect
it has hidden gems of wisdom that are there for the persistent reader. Rollo May's "The Courage
to Create" is still a favorite of mine.

Written by a highly intelligent thinker and packed full of high concepts and ideas, this is not a book for the faint-hearted - but it rewards the patient reader. I took my time and read five pages a day. Within a couple of months or so I had finished one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. It was really eye-opening and thought-provoking. If you suffer from anxiety and you’re trying to understand what anxiety is, and who you are, this will certainly aid your reflections and may even provide key insights leading to some peace of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A provocative intellectual history of anxiety with solid discussions of philosophers and psychologists
Reviewed in France on October 21, 2017
Rollo May observes and assesses the cultural, historical, biological and psychological aspects of various theories of anxiety. His clinical summaries reveal anxiety to be a life-long challenge. In the Meaning of Anxiety, he seeks to clarify the basic principles valuable in confronting anxiety - and coming to terms with it. The Meaning of Anxiety is a provocative intellectual history of anxiety with solid discussions of philosophers and psychologists from S. Kierkegaard to K.Horney.
