In this revised edition of his classic work―the first modern book on anxiety following Freud and Kierkegaard―psychologist Rollo May brings order and lucidity to the subject of anxiety.
Rollo May challenges the idea that "mental health is living without anxiety," believing it is essential to being human. He explores how it can relieve boredom, sharpen sensibilities, and produce the tension necessary to preserve human existence. May sees a link extending from anxiety to intelligence, creativity, and originality, and guides the reader away from destructive ways to positive ways of dealing with anxiety. He convincingly proposes that anxiety can impel personal change, as it is only by confronting and coping with it that self-realization can occur.

Anxiety is a fear of nothing in particular. In health, anxiety converts into fear and drives us to deal with objective threats to survival or identity. In neurosis, the contradiction between expectations of reality and what is actually the case can't be faced directly and anxiety is expressed in symptoms that are only indirectly related to the source of the anxiety.
The evidence is less compelling than experimentalists would desire, mainly consisting of schematic case studies.
I found value in that I could use what May provides to better understand my own life. I would thus classify this book as philosophy or theory of self-help than as science. The last three chapters drew a labored beginning to an insightful close
The book was written in the 70's. I need to spend more time with the book though. I suspect
it has hidden gems of wisdom that are there for the persistent reader. Rollo May's "The Courage
to Create" is still a favorite of mine.
