Synopsis

Bruce Paine, a fugitive from justice, comes to Paradise Island, having confessed to crimes committed by his father, though his fiancée, Alice Burroughs, retains her faith in him. Paine encounters John Stort, a dissolute trader, and Marua, a young native girl who is his "property." When Paine defends Marua from Stort's cruelty, a serious situation is averted only by Paine's refusal to fight, disappointing Marua, who wants him to be her master. Though Paine resists her advances, Stort becomes insanely jealous, and in a fierce battle Paine is victorious but badly hurt; a Captain Roper relays the state of affairs to Alice. Meanwhile, Stort determines to kill Paine, who has succumbed to island fever, but Marua throws herself across Paine's body to receive a fatal spear thrust, and, before dying, she shoots Stort. Alice arrives with the news that Paine's name has been cleared, and the lovers return home to be married while Marua is forgotten.
