NOISE, FILTH, RAUNCHY, PUNK, GARAGE ROCK N ROLL FROM THE GUTTERS OF QUEENS AND NYC........CIRCA EARLY TO MID 70S
Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2018Verified Purchase
well if you are/where a big dolls fan this is a fantastic clam shell box set here, the best for me are the first two discs out of the 5 becouse they are all demos for the first two albums and feature a few songs that never made either the first or second dolls records, the remaining three discs are live bootleg shows that have been around unofficially for years now so with those shows that took place between 1973 and 75 you get a great big dose of what the dolls where all about OFF the two officially released mercury records, these guys where a cross between trash rock, early punk and basically sleazy glam. the discs remastering here sounds fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!! this comes with a decent booklet to, the dolls started out back in 1971 and they gigged around nyc at first and they played with a lot of people that are now considered godfathers of punk like the early neon boys and early television ( richard hell was in both bands) and of coarse borderlined on other outragious acts of that time especially iggy and the stooges but not quite as raunchy & noisy as the stooges where, you get it all across 5 great cds here of early demos and live shows, the filth, the noise and the mess this band where, when the term punk came along in 1976 a year after they broke up they all hated that term PUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they ( or should i say the two that are still alive as the other 3 have been dead for ages now) like to just be remembered as a raunchy rock n roll band, whatever you want to call them, i think it is stated best in the press release for this box set they certainly came from the wastelands of new york and made a mark on the scene here that is still admired and looked at generations later even though these guys only lasted but 4 years or so, anyway it was great spinning better sounding boots of these live shows and hearing them again and hearing a lot of these demos and outtakes for the first time, all i can say was this was certainly TRASH ROCK N ROLL at its best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB CHERRY RED.................

Why Only Five Stars??
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2018Verified Purchase
This is the New York Dolls in their prime and the whole thing has been re-mastered and sounds wonderful. The live recordings although not top notch are certainly a big improvement on the cassettes that one had to rely on that were copied from "a friend to a friend to a friend" This box-set deserve ten stars. As that is not possible I have scratted around to find things wrong with it to reduce it to five.
* The biggest error is the 73 Demo sessions do not include "Looking For A Kiss" - that is only available on "A Hard Night's Day".
* The Dallas recording is shown as 1974 but it is 1973.
* The "My Father's Place" doesn't have the first track "Babylon"
* The three French tracks are from 01st Dec 73 not 23rd Dec 73.
* The whole lot was brought out in 2006 by Sanctuary - it would be nice to have something different
* The demos do not include the album out-takes from 73 and 74 - it would be good to have them all together
All that not withstanding, this is still absolutely wonderful and you should buy it
