President’s Message As I write, Christmas is looming large on the horizon. The pleasure of seeing joy in the eyes of “little persons” as they open presents, the spirit of goodwill in the air and hopefully a happy time for all in spite of the over-commercialisation of the season. Lilias and I hope it will be good for us all.

(from the CCF) in the presence of the Bishop of Lancaster and more than three hundred worshippers. Rossall at its finest and most emotional: nowhere could there have been a more poignant memorial for those lost.

Since the last message, activity continues apace, much of it recorded separately in this publication. For your scribe, September saw the increasingly popular London Barbeque at the Oriental Club, a sort of debut for both the Headmaster and Julie Barkhuizen, our Alumni Relations Manager.

Genuine progress has been made and is being made. However, for maximum benefit to be derived, it is necessary for the database to be both accurate and fully operational. I know Dawn de Beer and Julie Barkhuizen are working ‘flat-out’ to ensure that our new system delivers.

The Rossallian Golf Society’s Autumn Meeting, at Royal Mid-Surrey, was a success. Thereafter, a visit to Devon where a “classic” meeting took place; P.M. de W. Boult (F 53-57) and I met for the first time since 1963, a living example of the value of old school connection! Glad cries, some reminiscing and determination to sustain contact now re-established.

I must commend our new Alumni Relations Manager to us all. (Her CV is well documented, 30+ years at Rossall speaks for itself ). We are fortunate to have her: already she has shown just how fortunate!

In between was the Remembrance Weekend at Rossall – a major tour-de-force. Your full committee met; the new Performing Arts Studio was opened by the benefactor himself, David McKee; our marvellous pipe organ in Chapel was played in public for the first time since 2001 - a wonderful tribute to all ORs who have given their lives in conflict; a delightful dinner in Common Room, hosted by the Headmaster, with Tim Fletcher and his team serving an admirable repast, and where several of us who had made the pilgrimage to the WW1 Battlefields held a re-union along with members of the Rossallian Club Committee, Council, Foundation and Common Room: a really worthwhile gathering.

March 1st to 3rd are the dates for the 2019 OR Weekend. Details of the full, varied and active weekend are advertised elsewhere. Please make the effort to be with us – the 125th Anniversary of the Club and the 175th of the School; you will be extremely welcome and, who knows, you may experience similar pleasure as Peter Boult and I have done!

I have mentioned the Rossallian Club Committee Meeting. We tackled my vision, which includes: (a) changing our focus on events here at home; (b) becoming more pro-active in engaging with ORs overseas; (c) providing modest support for highlighted projects for both past and present Rossallians; and (d) developing stronger links with School, Council and Foundation.

2019 heralds continuing activity, with dates for us all. The President of the Old Sedberghian Club has accepted my challenge in the Fives court, on the Two splendid dinners followed in November: Bridge table and Backgammon board, with a dinner the LORD Dinner in London at the RAF Club, thrown in! The venue is Sedbergh, the School, and superbly arranged by Hamish Aird, and the German the Black Bull Hotel; the date is Friday 18th January. Dinner in Munich, headed up by Dr. Kreuzer, Julia Anyone wishing to take part, please contact either Julie or our worthy Secretary, Ian Preston. Teuber assisting.

As the pages of the calendar turn over to a New Year, I sense a real feeling of optimism pervading Rossall – let us all take a part, however small, in nurturing such a spirit.

Meantime, Lilias, once again joins me in wishing you all a very happy and successful New Year: we look Sunday produced a magnificent Remembrance forward to meeting many more of you along the way. Service in Chapel with full military involvement Sincerely,

Graeme Marrs MBE (J & F 51-57)

A Word from The Headmaster, Jeremy Quartermain It gives me great pleasure to write a few words to preface this splendid new edition of the Old Rossallian.

less realised, without the steadfast commitment and generosity of those who are committed to supporting the School into the future. On the very weekend that we commemorated the hundredth anniversary of the signing of the armistice and recalled those from our own community who sacrificed their own lives during this dreadful conflict, we were fortunate to do so within the surroundings of our fantastic new Performing Arts Studio. This incredibly important project was entirely dependent upon the generosity of Old Rossallian David McKee and we thank him for a gift which will enrich the lives of our boys and girls for generations to come. Later that very same weekend we had the opportunity to hear the wonderful Harrison and Harrison Chapel organ played for the first time after seventeen years of silence. This project was only possible due to the steadfast commitment of our Old Rossallians. Thank you.

I have been overwhelmed by the kindness and encouragement of Old Rossallians since my appointment earlier in the year. Indeed, I have been tremendously privileged to learn a great deal from meeting and listening to those whose intimate knowledge of this illustrious institution are coloured with candour, warmth and Rossallian wit. The dinners I have attended have provided an opportunity to relax in excellent company whilst reflecting upon the loyalty and I look forward to getting to know more Old generosity of those whose early lives have been shaped Rossallians as time passes and I intend to repay your generosity and support by ensuring that Rossall goes here at Rossall. from strength to strength. A Word from The Secretary, Ian Preston (J&Pe 66-73)

The occasion of the Triennial Dinner is the time for the election of a President and indeed other officers of the Club.

How many of you harbour a desire to meet up with your contemporaries, who you may not have seen for decades, to find out just what did happen to them after they left Rossall; but never quite get round to doing it.

Graeme Marrs, who is doing such a wonderful job in so many ways; his enthusiasm is infectious; has kindly offered to go on for another term. This is quite in order under our constitution, but I am mindful that the opportunity is there for any other Rossallian to put their names forward for the Presidency, if they should so desire. So if anyone would like to be considered, or you would like to nominate someone else, please do get in touch, Even if not for this time, maybe for in three years. Please contact alumni@rossall.org.uk

What I would ask you to do is put together a list of those old friends you would like to reconnect with, get in touch and arrange to meet at this year’s Triennial in March. I am absolutely sure you won’t have any regrets, maybe only if you don’t do it.

I have laboured this point before, but I make no apology for doing so again.

We do not know what is around the corner, so do it now before it is too late.

Much has changed at Rossall, but much hasn’t. Come and have a look at the fabulous new Sports Centre that is currently leaping out of the ground. It is very impressive. If you need any help finding an address or contact details, get in touch with the Rossallian Club Office and we will do our best to help.

The Sports Centre build is progressing well as we work towards an official opening in September 2019. The Rossall Foundation would like to encourage all ORs to support the Appeal. Having successfully raised ÂŁ200,000 towards the new Sports Centre, The Rossall Foundation has committed to raising a further ÂŁ300,000 by September 2019. This will coincide with the offical opening of the Sports Centre. Rossall has a long history of providing sporting excellence.

Event Reports Late Summer BBQ

North Yorkshire / Durham Gathering 2019

At the end of September, the Oriental Club once again welcomed Rossallians for the late Summer BBQ. The guests assembled in the ‘winter marquee’ on the terrace and enjoyed meeting up with old and new friends and sharing their own Rossall memories.

The annual North Yorkshire/Durham Gathering will again be held at the Buck Inn, Thornton Watlass, on Sunday July 14th 2019 (Le Quatorze Juillet).

Proceedings will start at 2.30pm. Afternoon tea and bubbly, with a French flavour, will be served at The BBQ buffet was delicious, as always, and we give 3.30pm. thanks to the Oriental Club catering team for their Please do come along and enjoy a rewarding afternoon hard work. among friends. Graeme Marrs introduced the Headmaster, Jeremy Quartermain, to the gathering and he was pleased to mingle and chat to all the assembled guests throughout the evening.

ORs from all generations joined together to sing the Carmen, the youngest being Roddy June Lau (MF 16 -18) who only left Rossall in the summer term. As always, we are grateful to Mike Jones for his help with this wonderful event.

Year 6 visit the Archives As part of their Unit of Inquiry on Peace and Conflict, Year 6 came to look around the Rossall Archives. They were fascinated by the old photographs and letters from students (who were serving during The Great War) to Housemasters; they asked lots of questions about the lives of the schoolboys who went to war. It was wonderful to see our current children so engaged with the history of their school.

Speaker Series: Brian Redman, By John Cooper (Pe, Year 10) Brian Redman was a British racing driver who was a Rossallian from 1950 to 1953. He raced in many classes of racing, preferring sports car racing. He is probably best known for racing the Spa-Francorchamps 1000km race four times and raced in F1, next to Graham Hill and John Surtees. Unfortunately, he did not win Le Mans but none-the-less, he had great potential and drove at a professional level until he was in his sixties. Amazingly, he has survived many crashes with broken arms and all-over-burns in a time when one in every three drivers died. It was incredible how he remembered every moment of each race. He is clearly a gifted man with a will to impress and is still very lively, with a good humour. Brian is very highly thought of in the motoring world and has had a great career with Ferrari, Porsche, Cooper and more. Brian made the talk very enjoyable, he had an answer for every question. It was a pleasure to meet him and hear his stories, from the highs to the lows. I wish that I could have heard more and I hope that more people can learn from him.

For a list of forthcoming events, please see page 17 of this magazine. All Old Rossallians and their guests are welcome to join us.

International Reports

German Dinner The German Dinner in November was held in Munich this year. Celebrating 20 years of the IB at Rossall, it was fantastic to see Rossallians ranging from one of this year’s leavers, Konstantin Wartenberg (SE 16-18), to three of the first sixteen Diploma students to study the IB at Rossall. A magnificent Bavarian feast was provided by the restaurant, Zum Franziskaner, and Rossallians enjoyed catching up with news, reminiscing about their schooldays and meeting Graeme Marrs (President OR Club), Dr. Doris Dohmen (who had taught almost all of them) and Julie Barkhuizen (Alumni Relations Manager) from the School. They were interested to hear of any changes that had taken place since they left Rossall and to be told of the projects which have been completed and further developments in progress. Sincere thanks to Dr Heinrich Kreuzer (father of Teresa Kreuzer R 06-08), for his help in choosing the restaurant and booking hotels.

Isle of Man Dinner The Headmaster, Jeremy Quartermain, and the Development Director, Henry Shepherd ( JS & P 68-78) attended a splendid OR Dinner at the Regency Hotel, Douglas, on Thursday 22nd November 2018. It is hoped that this will become an annual event. The date for 2019 will be circulated shortly.

WW1 Remembrance Weekend Performing Arts Studio Opening To coincide with WW1 Remembrance Weekend, we officially opened the Performing Arts Studio, providing a vital new theatre venue and rehearsal space to support the arts in the School and across the local community. The Performing Arts Studio includes a professional standard theatre with acoustic lining and sprung floor which can be used for dance as well as drama. Facilities include a control room, fitted with industry standard lighting and sound decks as well as a Green Room and supplementary teaching spaces. We were able to create this wonderful space thanks to the generosity of OR David McKee (David attended Rossall School from 1949 to 1956, and with his wife, Renee, were founders of the McKee Gallery in New York City). The opening was a great opportunity to host the pupils WW1 Commemoration Exhibition. As part of a cross-curricular project, many lessons in the week prior to Remembrance were planned around the centenary and pupils benefited immeasurably from studying various aspects of World War One across their subjects. The pupils participated in a diverse range of activities, the results of which were beautifully displayed in the Studio.

Organ Recital Many of the visitors to the opening of the Performing Arts Studio stayed on for the early evening organ recital. Due to the generosity of ORs, after seventeen long years of silence, Rossall Chapel’s Harrison and Harrison organ is sounding once again. We were fortunate enough to be entertained by Joe Watson, our Assistant Director of Music ( JS & Pe 98–14), Zac Crowe (MF, Year 12, Foundation Scholar) and Connie Lupton (Dn, Year 9). An amazing sound filled the Chapel, and it was a taste of what we would hear at our Commemoration Service the following day. Donations of £305 were received for the Chapel Organ Fund. 8

Commemoration Service

Tommy: There But Not There There But Not There is the 2018 Armistice project for the charity Remembered. Remembered has three simple but significant aims: Commemorate, Educate and Heal. The Tommy silhouette was purchased by the Rossallian Club to commemorate the Fallen by highlighting the sacrifices made, and to educate our community to understand what led to the slaughter of so many during WW1. Tommy was blessed by the Bishop of Lancaster at the service and a poignant silence fell over the congregation as the names of those who lost their lives during WW1 were read by members of the relevant houses. A collection of £475 was received for the charity.

OR 9 Lessons and Carols This year saw another huge turnout for the annual OR Carol Service. The spirit of Christmas was palpable as the Rossall Chapel Choir processed past the expectant congregation to the moving sound of Once in Royal David’s City. As always, the performance of the Choir, led by Margaret Young, was first class. This year they were joined by ORs Chloe Atkinson, Gillian Austin-King, Matthew Baldwin, Peter Bowden, Hannah Fryer, Sarah Gordon, Emily Hall, Frankie Jones, Jonny Lee, Joshua Lee, Sing Liem, Swie Joo Liem, Tessa Marsh, Sam Pitcher, Josh Roberts, Harvey Stansfield, Kirsty Swarbrick and Jane Wilkinson who took the opportunity to revisit their own time singing at Rossall. There were readings by Katie Lee, Callum Baxter, Sarah Gordon, James Garnett, Frankie Jones, Matthew Baldwin, Sharon Alonso, Richard Rhodes and Graeme Marrs (President of the Rossallian Club). Mince pies and mulled wine in the Dining Hall completed a joyous occasion, and it really was an uplifting start to the true celebration of Christmas.

Cricket Tour 2018

Jonty Arundel (J&A 1972-1979)

The Old Rossallian cricketers gathered in Alton, Hampshire on Monday 6th August for our first fixture against Alton CC. Alton is famous for the Civil War battle in December 1643 and for coining the phrase Sweet Fanny Adams.

The glorious weather continued and we were asked to bowl first. Alton batted sensibly, accumulating 248 for 6, with Henry Faj bowling 16 uninterrupted overs and taking 3 wickets. Brad Gosling, Ben Griffiths and Luke Williams also bowled well on a placid wicket. The OR run chase started well but with wickets falling on regular occasions, the chase was too much and an all out score of 200 did not reflect a game that could have been closer. On Tuesday we travelled east to Sussex and Hurstpierpoint College to play the Old Hurstjohnians and having won the toss, elected to bat. By lunch we had established a strong position being 150 for 2 with Luke Williams and Rob Dingle batting well. Something in the water affected our post lunch performance with us being bowled out for 198, losing 8 wickets for 30 runs, Luke Williams falling 8 runs short of his century. The wicket was far too good to be able to defend such a low score and the OJ’s did so for 3 wickets without much trouble. On Wednesday we continued our travels east to play the Old Amplefordians at Tonbridge CC. Three

counties in three days and following heavy overnight rain on an uncovered pitch we lost the toss and were asked to bat. The wicket was sticky to say the least, run making was not easy and a declaration at 206 for 7 was deemed enough by local knowledge. Both Rob Dingle and Dan Robson batted well in posting our score. The OA’s then proceeded to throw their wickets away and with 8 down and 60 runs needed, the game was over. However, a valiant effort from the last two batsmen almost saw them home with the last wicket falling 10 runs short. Great bowling from Brad Gosling and Rob Dingle, ably supported by Matt Dryden, Ben Griffiths and Harry Talbot gave us a well-deserved victory. We were due to play the OA’s the following day in a T20 competition but sadly the weather turned and the game was called off. OR’s on duty, on and off the pitch were, Jonty ( Jonathan) Arundel, Robert Cooke, David Taylor, John Wildman, Philip Tushingham (home from NZ), Chad Simpson, Howard Green, Robert Dingle, Matthew Dryden, Luke Williams, Harrison Talbot, Ben Griffiths, Bradley Gosling, Charles Preston, Daniel Robson, Neil Salvi, Henry Fajemirokun and Simon Thomas.

Any cricketers reading this report who would like to join us in August 2019, for a day or more, can contact me on 07798 931892. Tour Dates: 5th to 8th August 2019. 12

Sir John was born in Handforth, Cheshire in 1926, to Frank and Winifred Rowlinson, and was at Rossall from 1940 to 1944 in Spread Eagle House. He then went to Trinity College, Oxford, where he was awarded a Millard Scholarship to read Chemistry. He graduated with first class honours in 1947 and went directly into a DPhil in Chemical Kinetics. In 1950 he won a Fulbright Scholarship and became a research associate at the University of Wisconsin. In 1951 he moved to Manchester University as a Fellow and, subsequently, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. He also became a Liberal councillor. In 1961 he was appointed chairman of Chemical Technology at Imperial College and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1970. After moving back to Oxford in 1974 as Professor of Chemistry, he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1976, and received the Faraday Lectureship Prize in 1983. During his prolific career he published over two hundred papers and two textbooks. He retired in 1993 becoming an Emeritus Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He was knighted in the 2000 Birthday Honours.

Once he had completed microbiology training in London, and military service in the Far East, he again returned to Cambridge. He was appointed consultant microbiologist to Papworth and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals in 1967. During his time in Cambridge he became a leading authority on Infective Endocarditis and on infections complicating cardiac transplantation. He authored original work on laboratory safety and safety cabinets, evaluation of disinfectants, hospital infections and history of infection control. He was the first person to discover an important mechanism for bacterial resistance. He published approximately one hundred and sixty papers and editorials. He sat on several national and European committees for safety cabinets and hospital disinfection. He was particularly pleased to be at the forefront of antibiotic research, giving the first dose of Cefuroxime and Ciprofloxacin (two important antibiotics) in the UK.
