There's enough salvation in Father Father for even a devout sinner like me to imagine for one short moment that I'm going to heaven. I'm going to hell though, and so are you. But that doesn't mean we can't enjoy Pops' vibe.

Pops really puts Father Father out there for the listener to decide how to interpret it, which should alleviate the fears of most folks who are hesitant to gospel-tinged music. My interpretation? Father Father is all sorts of shades of cool with a dark blues groove with a refreshing casualness. Pops is cooler than you, but you should feel no envy.

It's also special when you come across one of those songs on an album. You know the kind I mean. One of those songs you store away in the back of your mind as a song you can always turn to in times of need. A song you can wow somebody with when you showcase it on a mixtape. A song that beckons you to find a comfortable chair that tilts back so you can fully relax and just let the song swirl around you. Pops Staples version of "Jesus Is Going To Make Up (My Dying Bed)" is one of those songs. Muddy blues guitar picking and a haunting male gospel choir to darken the corridors; it doesn't get more chilling. For good measure, Pops gets hallelujahs for his readings of "Gotta Serve Somebody," "Glory Glory," "Simple Men" and "Waiting For My Child."

So get down on your knees and say a word or two of thanks for Father Father. I know I just did, and I feel a lot better as a result. Still going to hell though.
