Biography

Imagina von Isenburg-Limburg, was born about 1255, perhaps at Limburg an der Lahn, the daughter of Gerlach I von Isenburg, Herr von Limburg, and his wife, Imagina von Blieskastel.[1]

She married circa 1271, Adolf von Nassau, Graf von Nassau in Wiesbaden.

They had at least 8 children[2]

  1. Heinrich, died young;
  2. Ruprecht, born before 1280, first mentioned 1288, died 2 December 1304, buried in Prag;
  3. Mechtild, born circa 1280, married 1 September 1294 Nürnberg, Rudolf I, Herzog von Bayern, Pfalzgraf bei Rhein, and died 19 June 1323 at Heidelberg, and was buried at Klarenthal;
  4. Adelheid, mentioned 1298, was a nun at St Klara zu Mainz, and Abbess of Klarenthal 1311, died 26 May 1338 and was buried at Klarenthal;
  5. Imagina, died young (?);
  6. Gerlach I, born before 1288, eventually succeeded as Graf von Nassau;
  7. Adolf, born 1292, died young 1294;
  8. Walram III, succeeded as Graf von Nassau in Wiesbaden, Idstein and Weilnau 1312-1316, died after 22 December 1324 and was buried at Klarenthal.

Her husband Adolf, was elected King of Germany at Frankfurt am Main 5 May 1292 and crowned at Aachen 24 June that year.[3]It's not clear whether she was crowned with him, but her seals show her with a crown. The inscription on one is S YMAGIE DEI GRA QVONDAM ROMANOR REGINE (I Imagina, by the grace of God, Queen of the Romans)?[4]

Adolf was deposed at Mainz Cathedral 23 June 1298 but refused to accept the judgement and was killed in battle near Göllheim on 2 July 1298, fighting against Albrecht I, Duke of Austria, who had been elected as his successor.[3] He was buried at Rosenthal Abbey, but was transferred to Speyer Cathedral in 1309.[1]

Imagina eventually retired to Klarenthal Cloister where her daughter Adelheid was Abbess and died there on 29 August, after 1317.[3], [2]
